1.
I think when people say it, they're talking about some "overplaying" which is not serving the song. This could be an unnecessary drum fill for example. The band would say "You know, sometimes less is more". The producer would say "leave that sh*t out!"
That is my interpretation as well. I sometimes find it a bit amusing though when very limited players praise the virtues of simple bass lines but at the same time have a dig at anyone who writes more complicated parts and fits them into a song. I have seen so many interviews of limited players giving quotes along the lines of 'you know, I totally could play more complicated parts, but I deliberately keep my bass parts simple because I'm really not into ostentatious playing and I really want to take a more mature approach towards the instrument', as if they they had the technical chops of Marcus Miller or Billy Sheehan but were just holding themselves back for the sake of the horrible indie/rock/metal song I can't stand listening to. To that I would (sarcastically) say that 'Less is more if you are capable of more. If you are only capable of less then less is just less.'
2. I used to have three Trace Elliot heads, now I only have the one, though it is the V6. The SMX head I had was really nice, the GP7 SM300 1x15 combo was used for over ten years without any problems. I ended up selling them just because the V6 was getting all of the use for bigger set ups and my Mesa Walkabout was, and still is, my main 'go to' head. Don't get me wrong, I still like Trace Elliot, I just got fed up of the 'pre shape' function as pretty forming the basis of my sound for so bloody long, it was just time for a change.
3. Withdrawn on 21 July 2017. I bought a new light bulb and installed a new Mesa tube. I turned on the lamp to check that it was working and then fell in love with the amp again. So I'm going to just keep it.
4. Nice. If we were on Talkbass we could start a 'non-collectable but ultimately cool late 1970s-to early 1980s Precision' club.
5. It will make no difference to the value. I have one of those s9 serial number Precisions. I have never even bothered checking when the various parts were made. Condition and the issue of whether it is 'all original' will be the main indicators or value. Playability and sound will be the indicators of whether the bass is worth buying. When I was young the basses from this era were cheap to buy as they came from an unfashionable time in Fenders history. I bought mine for under £400 in 1999 whereas the same bass would be worth at least a grand now and probably more if I'd not been playing it regularly for 18 years!
6. Don't get me wrong, I really like Tool and really rate Justin Chancellor. I even tried a Wal mk I but once I tried it I just didn't think it it was any nicer than the basses I already had. Horses for courses and all that, as I'm guessing a lot of folk would have preferred that particular Wal to any of my basses I owned at the time! Looking forward to the new album when it eventually hits. Can't believe it has been 11 years since I saw them live touring 10,000 Days though...
7. Looks nice and if stops a few 'I need a Wal to have a bass sound like Tool' forum posts then I'm all for it.
8. That is just beyond outstanding customer service. In fact it really goes beyond customer service considering it was a pre-owned unit. Well done!
9. I have never played a Musicman bass that wasn't a well built, well designed instrument that could be used a variety of different styles. I have also never played a Musicman bass that I would actually buy. You definitely don't get a dud. At worst you will get a good bass that just isn't right for you.
10. I'm watching it too. Some utterly class playing.
11. 'I just bought a guitar and need to sell a bass amp to buy a guitar amp' bump
12. I thought 'what a pointless pedal' when I heard about it, and then 'I NEED THIS' when I heard it.
13. I haven't listened to it in years. I mind playing it when I was about 15 and it didn't seem too over the top as bass line, especially by Flea's standards. I think that it is a classic from that era. I always think though that Chili Peppers songs are hard to cover because it can easily turn into a mess of umm, jangly guitars, meandering bass lines and atonal vocals! I really rate Flea as a bassist. His work in the first Mars Volta album is the best work of his career in my opinion.
14. I have tried a bunch of 1970s Jazzes and the quality has ranged from stunning to stunningly poor. If you get a good one you are lucky though. I remember when I was younger you could pick up a 1970s Jazz for about £700. I would imagine that we are only a few years away from 1980s Fenders becoming sought after as the prices of 1970s ones go higher and higher.
15.
IME any low B with a gauge of less than 125 will feel too floppy unless the break angles on the bridge and nut give it a lower than normal compliance.
I would pretty much echo this sentiment. Generally I like at least a 130 on a B string.
16. I don't think that a Hartke LH500 plus a normal 2x12 cab will be much lighter than what you already have. You could look at the number of class D and micro amps that are currently on the market, EBS, Aguilar, Ampeg, Markbass and TC Electronic all have some nice stuff. In terms of lightweight cabs, it depends on what you are looking for. The EBS 4x10 cabs are pretty heavy duty, you might feel an absence of heft with a micro set up.
17. I have ordered from them for about years. I last ordered a bunch strings during the Christmas period. The order took about a week to arrive but (a) it was the Christmas period; and ( I was in Orkney. Their website needs updating though. It is so old fashioned which doesn't inspire confidence.
18. 'Forgot I put this up a week or so ago' bump. Also happy to take offers so feel free to get in touch.
19. WITHDRAWN on 21/7/2017. I bought a new light bulb and installed a new Mesa tube. I turned on the lamp to check that it was working and then fell in love with the amp again. So I'm going to just keep it. Original listing below... Price or trade value: £600 No trades thanks, I have too much stuff as it is! This is the EBS Fafner v.1. Generally marketed as the 'rockier' of the EBS amps, though this amp as been used by plenty of jazz, rock and metal players, from Marcus Miller to 'that guy from In Flames I cannot remember at the minute.' 600 watts at 2 ohms, approximately 440 watts at 4 ohms. This amp is really loud and 'heft' is in abundance. The EQ is really flexible, the compression is really great and there is an option to a bit of valve/tube drive to dial in a bit of warmth to full on dirt and filth. It is really an amp that cover all musical bases and styles. Amp comes with the matching EBS Proline 4U rack case. The original Fafner needs a 4U space because the fan is mounted on the side and it needs air to breathe. EBS told me that you can still use a 1U unit in the space above without any issues though. The 'in full disclosure bit': 1. The red LED light is not currently working. This is a well known issue with the amp. The LED is only there for cosmetic effect (to give the simulation of a valve 'glowing' and other than that it serves no purpose whatsoever. 2. One of the springs on the handles of the rack case has stopped working. The handle works fine but when you let go of the handle it doesn't magically spring back into place like the other handle. Other than that the amp is in perfect working order. I can include the original manual and a Speakon cable with it as well. I have moved away from Glasgow and I am now living in Orkney again, which is where the amp is. Courier is probably the most sensible option. I have priced the item to take this into account. I am happy to provide quotes for courier/delivery so just give me a message if you have any questions.
20. Hmm, probably Fender and Gibson custom shop models if nothing else. In about ten years I would suspect that 1980s Fenders will become sought after even though they not highly thought of at the moment. As said above as well, any original bass made by a 'boutique' luthier before they retire: Fodera, Sadowsky, Ritter, Carl Thompson, Mike Lull etc.
21. First gig rig: 1998 Westfield Precision bass copy - whatever strings came with it. Trace Elliot GP7 SM300 1x15 combo. Replaced the Westfield with a 1978(ish) Fender Precision in the summer of 1999. My set up didn't change after that until 2009.
22. I always love getting a chance to play through an 8x10 a rehearsals. For me it isn't so much the enormous sound capacity, more the brilliant spread of sound from head to toe even at modest volume settings. I wouldn't buy one myself as most of the time I am lugging about my own gear by myself.
