1. I have tried a bunch of 1970s Jazzes and the quality has ranged from stunning to stunningly poor. If you get a good one you are lucky though. I remember when I was younger you could pick up a 1970s Jazz for about £700. I would imagine that we are only a few years away from 1980s Fenders becoming sought after as the prices of 1970s ones go higher and higher.
2.
IME any low B with a gauge of less than 125 will feel too floppy unless the break angles on the bridge and nut give it a lower than normal compliance.
I would pretty much echo this sentiment. Generally I like at least a 130 on a B string.
3. I don't think that a Hartke LH500 plus a normal 2x12 cab will be much lighter than what you already have. You could look at the number of class D and micro amps that are currently on the market, EBS, Aguilar, Ampeg, Markbass and TC Electronic all have some nice stuff. In terms of lightweight cabs, it depends on what you are looking for. The EBS 4x10 cabs are pretty heavy duty, you might feel an absence of heft with a micro set up.
4. I have ordered from them for about years. I last ordered a bunch strings during the Christmas period. The order took about a week to arrive but (a) it was the Christmas period; and ( I was in Orkney. Their website needs updating though. It is so old fashioned which doesn't inspire confidence.
5. 'Forgot I put this up a week or so ago' bump. Also happy to take offers so feel free to get in touch.
6. WITHDRAWN on 21/7/2017. I bought a new light bulb and installed a new Mesa tube. I turned on the lamp to check that it was working and then fell in love with the amp again. So I'm going to just keep it. Original listing below... Price or trade value: £600 No trades thanks, I have too much stuff as it is! This is the EBS Fafner v.1. Generally marketed as the 'rockier' of the EBS amps, though this amp as been used by plenty of jazz, rock and metal players, from Marcus Miller to 'that guy from In Flames I cannot remember at the minute.' 600 watts at 2 ohms, approximately 440 watts at 4 ohms. This amp is really loud and 'heft' is in abundance. The EQ is really flexible, the compression is really great and there is an option to a bit of valve/tube drive to dial in a bit of warmth to full on dirt and filth. It is really an amp that cover all musical bases and styles. Amp comes with the matching EBS Proline 4U rack case. The original Fafner needs a 4U space because the fan is mounted on the side and it needs air to breathe. EBS told me that you can still use a 1U unit in the space above without any issues though. The 'in full disclosure bit': 1. The red LED light is not currently working. This is a well known issue with the amp. The LED is only there for cosmetic effect (to give the simulation of a valve 'glowing' and other than that it serves no purpose whatsoever. 2. One of the springs on the handles of the rack case has stopped working. The handle works fine but when you let go of the handle it doesn't magically spring back into place like the other handle. Other than that the amp is in perfect working order. I can include the original manual and a Speakon cable with it as well. I have moved away from Glasgow and I am now living in Orkney again, which is where the amp is. Courier is probably the most sensible option. I have priced the item to take this into account. I am happy to provide quotes for courier/delivery so just give me a message if you have any questions.
7. Hmm, probably Fender and Gibson custom shop models if nothing else. In about ten years I would suspect that 1980s Fenders will become sought after even though they not highly thought of at the moment. As said above as well, any original bass made by a 'boutique' luthier before they retire: Fodera, Sadowsky, Ritter, Carl Thompson, Mike Lull etc.
8. First gig rig: 1998 Westfield Precision bass copy - whatever strings came with it. Trace Elliot GP7 SM300 1x15 combo. Replaced the Westfield with a 1978(ish) Fender Precision in the summer of 1999. My set up didn't change after that until 2009.
9. I always love getting a chance to play through an 8x10 a rehearsals. For me it isn't so much the enormous sound capacity, more the brilliant spread of sound from head to toe even at modest volume settings. I wouldn't buy one myself as most of the time I am lugging about my own gear by myself.
10. Depending on condition, anything from £150-£200.
11. It might be sacrilege to say this, but if Jon Stockman wasn't the bassist in Karnivool, I probably would never listen to them. I think that I would nearly add Flea to this as well. I don't really like The Who that much either, but John Entwistle was fantastic.
12. I have used a Boss TU2 for the last 12 years or so. No issues though I don't think I could ever get desperately excited about a tuner.
13.
How's was the QC on them? Been hearing bad things about them over the past few years.
I tried a Classic, a Traditional and the Standard. I thought that the set up on the Traditional was pretty poor, but in terms of fit and finish they were all pretty good. The Standard for me though did seem to be on another level in terms of quality. I'm sure that if I played about 6 of the same models though there would be probably be a ratio of one gem, one dog and 4 that are 'fine'.
14. I went through a similar process when I was trying out Gibson Les Pauls. The Gibson Les Paul Standard (Traditional) is a really nice guitar but not £2200 good. At this point it is what it is.
15. Great amps but I think that they lugged in with Trace Elliot and SWR as being considered as amps of a bygone era. You don't hear much about them in terms of new product launches at NAMM and the man behind the amps David Nordschow left and set up his own company which has probably caused some divided loyalties amongst people on bass forums who like to set up clubs with member numbers and such like.
16. I have a B3K and a Billy Sheehan (original). I think that the best thing to do in the circumstances is to forget the marketing blurb, glowing reviews and Youtube videos and instead just try and get an opportunity to try the pedals. I must say that I don't really rate the EBS pedal that highly. Yes it the looping system is great but as said above the overdrive and clean is out of phase and you have to create a bit of a spaghetti junction pedal board situation to put it right. It might work for Billy Sheehan but it didn't really work for me. I currently use a the B3K alone with an old Sansamp bass driver to act as an EQ if I am using a passive Precision. It sounds fine on lower gain settings and the Darkglass blend options are some of the best I have used. If I think that the sound is a bit scooped I can add mids back in at my amp. If I am using an active bass, I don't feel that I need an additional EQ on top of the instrument EQ and amp EQ, I have seen loads of Darkglass videos with traditional Jazz basses or Precision basses. Yes the B*K stuff seems to be marketed towards the metal crowd, but it can do other sounds as well. I have the Duality pedal as well and absolutely love it. It is a completely over the top fuzz.
17. I have an Excess II in a finish I think was called 'urban grey'. I've had it since 2004. The pick ups are ridiculously powerful. Terrific bass and great for rock music and slap. I think the treble EQ point is set a bit too high for my tastes though as I think it is a bit glassy when boosted. I also have an Arpege IV five string and I think that there a couple of pics of it earlier in this thread. If I am being honest I don't really rate the phenowood neck as highly as the big slab of maple on the Excess. That is just personal preference though. The three band EQ for each pick up is pretty mad but a cool feature. My brother has an Excalibur guitar which is a very nice super strat type guitar. He describes it as almost too perfect and if pushed he prefers the quicks of his seventies Tele Custom.
18. I am generally in agreement with The Simpson when they make fun of the Grammys and don't even consider it an award. In terms of how Adele could win an award for best album for an album released in November 2015, I believe the deadline for releases each year is 30 September. This means that Lady Gaga can win it next year or her album released late last year.
19. That is a funky looking bridge! I'm interested to know what all the various knobs and switches do as well. Great buy!
This is winging its way to me from Spain. A member here was going to buy it so I helped them out with some info. They decided against it so I took over. It's a series 1, fretless five string. I've never seen one before. Hopefully Patrice V will be able to tell me when it was made as it pre-dates the serial number database.
20. By The Way by RHCP for me. I just thought it was a sappy overproduced mess with a couple of good tunes (This is the Place and Don't Forget Me). Also, St Anger got a lot of favourable reviews from the rock and metal press as some kind of 'raw return to form'. I just thought it was rubbish from the outset.
21. I have tried a GP7 4x10 a few times and I think an GP12 SMX, but I can't remember. Both sounded fine but I really think with a 4x10 you are better off with a separate head and cab. You can buy a decent old school Trace Elliot head and 4x10 for pretty much the same price as a 4x10 combo.
22. I love Ozzy era Black Sabbath. For me any version of Black Sabbath that doesn't feature Ozzy, Iommi, Geezer and Bill Ward just isn't Black Sabbath. I'm glad though that the Ozzy, Geezer and Iommi were all well enough to have a final tour to say goodbye.
23. 40-100 just now for standard tuning but usually 45-105. 50-120 for anything from D standard down to C standard on a four string. For five strings, generally 45-135. Not really fussy about going a gauge heavier or lighter though.
