Tuning / Detuning - confusing the **** out of me
But there you are talking about playing a part differently....Who is going to notice if you are fretting a low D on a five rather than drop tuning and playing an open string?
I agree with you, if its played well its played well regardless of where you fret it Although the guns n roses example earlier in the thread takes this to far, thats changing the sound of the line completely, nothing wrong with that though if thats what you set out to do -
Depends what you are calling completely wrong. Fretting notes instead of open strings and tuning up differently? The only people who will pick up on that, maybe, are other bass players-and even then as long as the notes are right it won't matter.
I guess for the pub / party stuff I do that it seems 90% of people would not notice anything they simply hear a song they know and scream / dance etc, but there is always the arms folded blokes who notice alot even if they dont play themelves they know what things should sound like, these are the interesting people to chat to after, Im one when I watch a band Reason I say the above is I've seen bands where the bass player plays only root notes only where you really need the rest to make the song work, but the crowd still dance as they know the song, or equally great bands with bad singers who achieve the same Assuming this thread assumes we are talking about covering songs as close as possible to the recording, but that doesn't mean you have to fret it the same? The poster who said "no one cares" is wrong, some people do care and will feel cheated if you do a bad job, just because people dance, doesn't mean you've played good music -
Used my PF500 and 115 last night at a practice session, was very happy with it, 1st gig for it will be next saturday

Just been given a set list for a dep gig , for outside private party which will be in full swing when we arrive, first time ive seen a song listed under sound check on a list, then set 1 and 2, song is sultans of swing Guess its not a bad idea as the party will already be going Otherwise, normally with bands, either whatever the guitarists decided to noodle around with, or a song which might need a run through still

Tuning / Detuning - confusing the **** out of me
lojo replied to thunderbird13's topic in General Discussion
The op spoke of the confusion caused due to learning in STD then being asked to detune, then there is issue as to how you communicate re keys Id suggest your band state on the song list what the real key is and also what the fretted key is on a detuned instrument set to their suggested tuning When I do a dep or short notice gig, I ask for definate confirmation of key for any songs don't feel I could play in any key on demand De tune if you need to , but if you feel more comfortable in STD tuning then don't let them make you -
The obc 410 is the best cab I've ever played through by far, but its also to heavy for dragging around pubs and parties for me
I've got to nail a set list for a depp in a week or so and was struggling a bit with a couple of numbers, so in an attempt to save myself some time I downloaded the tabs. What a miserable experience, not very accurate and I just found myself losing the will and getting very bored with it. Gone back to relying on ears and some improvising. I know TAB is a useful resource but I really can't get on with it. Right off to learn Shine by Take That and Read my Mind/Killers.
Most tab is not accurate, but if your in a rush it can speed things up but you still have to listen to fill in the blanks and make judgements on what is wrong I find when I'm time pushed that chord charts are more useful for speeding up the process, you still have to learn the line by ear but at least you have a reference for roots and structure

Whilst I think blocks look cool on jazzes , I like the fact that Ps are fairly plain humble basses, blocks don't suit my image of a P

Hi Does anyone have a pile (or a few) of old bass magazines, Im happy to pay a reasonable amount for them Reason is a friend of mine who recently took up bass has had an accident and I thought a pile of bass mags would be a nice gift to ease the pain and boredom Thanks

I use paypal and sometimes for large amounts but I wouldn't use it to accept payments from anyone I wasn't sure of , it's ok for trusted bc members and trusted eBay buyers , but not many other situations for me

I'm playing mainly with flats of late, but tonight I backed some singers at a church with just me an and acoustic playing mininal and I found that i Missed the sustain of rounds, I found the notes dying before I wanted them to. Didn't anticipate this as none of the covers I've been playing of late had need for long enough sustain to highlight this.
