Slightly off topic I know, but insurance is nuts, we pay mostly to feel covered, but in reality if it comes down to it, half of what we pay out for aside from house and car, we would not be covered in most events due to small print Recently we where stopped from starting a football match because the centre had not received full payment, we asked why they knew the balance would come later as always, their answer was without full payment logged we would not be insured, "insured" we asked "what then are we insured for?", "accidents" he replied, "wow, one of our guys broke his leg on this pitch last year, should he have claimed, we didn't know he could?", "oh no, that wouldn't be covered"
We've been asked to propose some songs / bands with links to both countries. Cheers!
Bee Gees and Oliva Newton John (think they crossed paths going each way)
It does seem very basic.
Along with looking expensive

really honest guy, I like the way he still doesn't consider himself a musician, just a guy who plays bass, perhaps he has read some of the readers posts on here about reading I remember jamming along to sandanista when I first got a bass trying to figure out learning by ear
Nige is a good guy, I've known him for a long time. The 'Clutterbucking' (and he's got his own entry in urbandictionary.com to prove it) is just a stunt, and it is does impress the, erm, impressionable, and of course there's no such thing as bad publicity*. There's a lot more to his playing than this, tho - he's a very talented bassist. To stretch a footballing metaphor, if someone posted a link of Lionel Messi doing some keepy-uppy, it'd be an unwise move to conclude he's a crap footballer. I'd imagine just as keepy-uppy sells Nike and Adidas, pointless slap sells strings. On the other hand, that fantastic line mentioned earlier on the Bassday thread does apply: "Excuse me mate, but is that as hard to play as it is to listen to?" * Despite much of the content of this thread
If the guy is otherwise top class, and I don't doubt he is, why not then play something (even slap) that is more rhythmic and groovy, strange to think that speed would impress over content, its his choice, but I do wonder why?
Here is over 5 minutes of it! He makes funny faces too. "Nigel uses a technique he calls Rhythmsync where he confesses, notes are an optional extra!" Rhythmsync Hear the total div in the background "Fahhahakin ell! Ahmazinh, Wahhh, brilliant!". I know what he does in the evening.
I skipped to the end and it tells you what strings he was using just in case you are trying to mimic the sound To me its kind of like doing 1000 keepups with a football, requires some skill yes, but boring to watch, where as one perfectly placed and weighted pass at the right moment is a thing of beauty

Why are there so many Fenders/MM basses for sale???
lojo replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
So many around, like ford escorts in the 80s I guess -
Sometimes D tune my MIM P when I gig with a certain Rock Band, I do tweak the set up slightly, but no issues unless you count a loss of volume out of the passive pick ups Hate doing it though

I had one of these mm copies by tanglewood in the mid 90s, a friend of mine still has it, very good bass IMO , also used a tanglewood acoustic 6 string back then I even played my tanglewood bass at my wedding in 97, it's in my wedding album !

Some drummers I gel with and others I find a struggle to get used to, it doesn't make you a fraud surely, unless your of the opinion unless you can sight read etc etc your not a musician type thinking Fraud is surely only if you are intentionally misleading someone Its like team sports, some players you gel with and others you find hard to read and they you at the start

I think its a good creative idea, but if this catches on for some artists the loyalist fans will end up having to have all the tracks on offer , this means buying more than one album , me thinks it will get expensive for young fans of boy bands etc
I couldn't get mine to sound anything like the Rick you hear on recordings. It seemed to sound more like a Stingray. Conversely my Stingrays seemed to sound like Jazz basses, my Warmoth '57 sounds like a Rick and my gold Warmoth sounds like a Stingray since I made it active.
Gremlins eh

20 potential songs for one album, there must but some real dodgy ones
Needless to say going from that to church it was strange to work out where to look sometimes!
Thats what I found initially, as your engagement with out front is so not like a party type gig
and the only other way is to make the one you have better by fitting a "boutique" pickup like a Fralin or Lollar, Wizard or anything that is better than stock
Thats what I find strange, we all, including myself, state we love Ps, but then consider changing Pups to make it sound more P, doesn't compute really when you think about it ? Currently considering changing the ones in my 62 RI
Back when I was a wee nipper -- before religion and I pretty much gave up on each other -- I used to attend the local Free Church with my parents. The congregation was shall we say fairly advanced in years, and pretty much any attempt to work in anything even remotely up-tempo resulted in lots of grumbling about 'Top Of The Pops' and other such superannuated whinges. They were quite happy with their thees and thou-wouldsts and anything even remotely cheerful sounding was not acceptable. Oh, I hated it. So much for making a joyful noise. As some of the older people passed away, their places were not taken, and by the time I stopped going it was dying on its arse, literally. A decent band and some major key songs would have changed all that.
So many peoples experiences differ, but if you only attend one church and get turned off (or even on) its like going to a random concert and then judging all forms of music by it The church i support, is really lively and there are many good projects going on, but I have been to some that do more harm than good to everyone there Even within the church I attend, there are many views across the generations as to what is the way to worship, the leader however believes they all are valid, and runs 4 differing services on a sunday, all with the same message just different styles of worship, I play in the modern upbeat evening service with the full on band, initially started to attract the 20s, but now there are all ages of young and old attending

Yes, I to was waiting to see what bubble burst finish looks like Yes, I also wanted a ric for ages, and recently owned one for a year , they are fantastic in many ways but I can't escape the comfort of playing a p bass , it seems I always go back to this default setting, won't rule out having a ric again though

Good luck with it, and just remember that if you make a mistake its already in the past by the time you think about it, so just keep calm, carry on and enjoy it

A technical explanation of how guitar/bass strings work
lojo replied to dc2009's topic in General Discussion
Read the section and its almost to the letter as I was thinking with regard to the subject No seriously, great read if beyond me, good luck with wherever you are going to take this knowledge -
It has been nice to be able to put up a challenge without a flame war starting
Give it time Might have already posted this but there are some top worship artists playing at the o2 on the 11th I believe I can't make it as I already have a gig booked

Never used one , rarely seen one, but the last few live videos i've seen they have sounded awesome, maybe thats just the ampeg, do they differ that much from P bass pickup ? They also look great Anyone use one?
I've never even been paid a tenner for a gig. The sort of music I play doesn't get paid like that, but I fail to see why I should have to play stuff I don't want to (functions/covers). Fine, if it were a bread-winning job, I'd have to do it. Right now I have the ability and the gear but can't afford the continual and substantial drain on resources that rehearsal and gigging represent. As for food and drink, I was only talking about a burger and a coke or a single beer, but that still stacks up to nearly £400 per annum if you play once a week. Add £2.5k for rehearsal / associated travel and £500 for gig-related travel, et voila £3.4k a year to rehearse and play once a week. Based on there being no financial return, it's a cost I can no longer afford. Nice. Now we're turning into a hobby for the well-heeled only. Never thought I'd live to see the day.
Re the well heeled comment, every hobby is, its all relative, Id love to go jet skiing every day, but I can't afford to, but also their are people in the world who see my living room with its TV and Wii as something they would love to have just for one day a year Don't get bitter, make some choices, if you cant afford this band or think they are throwing money away, leave or make some suggestions about saving, perhaps rehearse / write acoustically in someone's place every other practice etc I know someone made a joke about "packed lunch", but seriously it amazes me the amount of people who live from week to week with no cash, but they blow money on packaged sandwiches and expensive drinks all the time, you can save a fortune alone each year, just being sensible here, if anyone laughs are makes jokes, they are not your mate if they understand your cashflow issues
This is an honest, questioning post, NOT trolling. Why does there seem to be a need for being a "Christian ......." (insert whatever here). I have recently seen a "Christian Motorbike Club" (out on a Sunday BTW), and this morning pulled up in a car park next to a car plastered in Christian stickers, including "Christian Surfers". Now we have "Christian Bass Players". There doesn't seem to be the need for atheist, Jewish or Muslim versions of these groups, why the need to create this segregation?
Nice question, but the need is simply defining the belief and code of the group in question, and it is also true that other faiths and even to some extent now non faiths do form groups You maybe reading this as they are forming something exclusive to them, but it is most likely the complete opposite, if they are truly christian, welcoming in and being with non believers etc is a big part of being christian As I said in a previous post, I am not a christian, but am a supporter of my local church, I see them do amazing things through a number of projects, and have found myself getting involved with the music through that
I'd never go near a church but it does interest me as to the way you do a church gig, it seems like there is A LOT of audience participation, does that put you off?
For me, especially as someone who doesn't understand the emotion of worship I see in the crowd where I play, it was very uncomfortable to start with, as I saw people who clearly used the music to connect with their God ? I was used to playing in front of a party crowd and obviously this was different, I even thought my being there might be wrong But now I really just lose myself in the music and enjoying the evening
