I wish there was as much originality in these posts as some people like to think there is in their music.
Are you referring to repeat posts that cover or pay tribute to previously posted comments Also, you can only say what you said if nobody has ever posted a similar post against these types of posts This is an original response, at least I think so
  2.
I actually agree with the principle that jazz standards amount to covers but I have to point out that the difference between any two performances of a given jazz standard can be massive to the point where the standard is barely recognisable as the same tune whilst the differences between two performances of a classical piece are unlikley to be that radical. The purpose of a covers/tribute band or orchestral piece is to broadly reproduce the original for purposes of entertainment. The purpose of a jazz standard (done properly and not by some jazz b*stard like Buble or Cullem) is to compeletly reconfigure it to display the perforamce skills of the musicians involved albeit still for the purposes of entertainment. Whilst it is perfectly possible for a covers band to radically rearrange a well known tune, it is a lot less common in rock/pop than it is in jazz. That's primarily because Jazz is better But, I agree, jazz standards are a short cut/cop out just as covers are and I would argue that originals indicate a higher degree of creativity.
So you play in a covers band then
  3.
Thanks very much guys. Just to clarify, I love my Precision as it is, but there's no way that I'll be able to play some of the parts I need to play on heavy flats, and I want to keep that bass as it is. Also, even if I could change that bass, I'd need a backup, and I don't see the point of two identical basses. G&L are clearly worthy of attention (especially the ASAT), as are Lakland, but having spent most of this afternoon looking around, an HH Stingray with rosewood board is still calling....
This is exactly why I started the flats for everything thread, as I love the songs we play that work with a flat strung P, but I need to also play duran duran, whitney Houston etc etc in the same set Great thread, hope you find something Chris I've been using my jazz lately, but I miss the real P tone, and prefer the P neck
  4. Thanks guys I'll look into these suggestions today Re: making one, I think the guys time will end up being worth more than the mixer, but thankyou for the thought
  5. I like the flight case, brought orange or DIYed ?
  6. Hi Just wondering if anyone can help I've got a tapco mix120 which i wish to make use of at home, but needs a power supply I thought a trip to maplins would sort it, but they don't have any adaptors to suit The mixer has a strange 3 pin male connector, and the similar one in the maplins multi fittings doesn't come close to fitting Seems the mixer is discontinued and I can't seem to find a power supply online for it Anyone got any ideas? Thanks BTW the power is 18v 10w, but its the 3 pin plug part which is the issue
  7. Its not a very short list
  8. I'm sure this debate has come up before To sum up lets agree .... Ideally everyone would have a in depth knowledge of theory, no matter how much natural talent exists, but that will never be, unless all our schools teach it as well as the written word, and alot of schools are still failing at that It is possible to enjoy and entertain and be in a good band with very little theory, but very difficult with none whatsoever It is possible to have a high level of theory and not be able to do anything apart from play from sheets It is possible to have no theory and not therefore not understand how much knowing theory could help, and therefore dismiss it It is possible to know theory and look down on those that don't It is possible to not know theory and think those that do are elite asses, even though they may be nice chaps who studied hard to know theory It is possible to know theory, be naturally good and be a top musician It is possible to have no theory, but have a good ear and do well at trail and error, even within complex arrangements It is possible to have no theory, bad timing and no ear It is possible to have theory, bad timing and no ear Have I missed any ?
  9. Anything that keeps bass players from hanging around in bus shelters is a good idea Im sure if you arrange it in a central location, and promote some sound ideas for it, you may have a great event on your hands
  10.
Hi Jigster no trades as I have a number of basses that I'm having to sell due to a house move to a smaller property
Are the other basses for sale on here?
  11. Cab long gone Flight case still for sale, anyone interested
  12.
Yep, I've noticed But does anyone meet up with basses to play/discuss/chill specifically about Jamerson? If not already, are there any folks that want to if there was such a thing?
Not that I know off, but no harm in you trying to arrange a get together if you can find anyone local who is interested
My main gripe with Rockschool is the inclusion of tablature. I believe that learning to read properly should be a basic requirement of the grades. To me,the inclusion of tab kind of defeats the object of studying the grades.
As you know Im not a reader, and I benefit from Tab use sometimes, but Id be very upset if I paid money for lessons and they used TAB as a teaching material
  14.
I think it's called Basschat!
Yep, plenty of fans all ready here
  15.
I play in a church band, I'm told I'll reap my reward in the land of glory
Ha, I forgot that one in my reply, I do play for free in church Im not a real christian, but do see a lot of good stuff done through the local church, so I am happy to be on a rota to play bass, and lend my other skills to projects if I can when asked

For anyone starting out, id do it differently if I started over, I mean learning theory properly etc But that does not take away from the fun and experiences, I and many others have, playing guitars, drums, keys etc at many levels without the theory background

I've been playing bass for 25 years off and on, and been in bands for most of that, have had some good paid gigs, and a lot of fun doing the just for expenses pub type stuff Technically and theory wise, I am a beginner and wouldn't refer to myself as a musician (I only had one lesson with Jakesbass)
  18. great post thanks, im enjoying this right now, but just had the dinner shout any more of these please
  19. Does anyone know any samples or links that show of the P bass version ?
  20.
I might also dispute your inferance that Stranglers songs are somehow straightforward to play.
I certainly don't think they are easy to play, some of them are in line with trying to play hit me with your .. What I was trying to hint at though, was if you have the ability to play some of the faster, more intense JJ stuff, then the ability to work them out without a book is most likely within the abilities of said player Very hard to play, yes, very hard some of them, but not so hard to work out the notes maybe Re: Ukulele, didn't Hayseed Dixie do some ACDC
  21.
I spied a Stranglers songbook [it was the one and only one I could find] for sale on the interweb and although i could not really make out what it said on the little pic of the front of the book, I just foolishly assumed that it was either a complete arrangement, or for guitar and bass or bass only. Well I mean, The Stranglers were a famousl bass fronted band. Did they even have a guitar player? I know they had some freaky deaky keyboard abuser. But guitar? I cant remember hearing one.? Anywaay..... The book appears this morning and yes you have guessed it. I open it up and is for "guitar treble clef" only. Wot a rotten poxy snotty swizz! Maybe I can get a bluey for it on fleabay, at least thats something. Oh wait hold on....... it has 'Bass arrangement for guitar 'on the song Peaches! Phew! that makes it all worth it. Like all bass players I have not the foggiest idea how the bass line to Peaches was notated. Its a total mystery. But now thanks to this songbook I can finally play it. I'll let you know how i get on.
Most of these books are aimed at musically untrained teenagers who are learning their favorite bands tunes through power chords, its how I started I would also guess that anyone who can read the whole arrangement, and has the skill to play those lines, wouldn't really need the book to work out stranglers songs Not sure I've got the drift of this thread, it might have gone over me head a little
  22.
OK, I'll ask; what's the point of bright flats? How long before they just sound like flat flats?
Id guess brightness , without the sustain of rounds, or brightness with the feel of flats (and they feel nice ) Just a guess
  23. Joy Division & New Order work, and he was part of that, and I love them both This however is neither
  24. If i've read your email correct, then as with this girl, there are some young trained musicians who can't yet play in a band situation, outside of collage style playing To be fair, this may have been her first step outside of that comfort given her comments about playing all styles, she has most likely done a bit of everything in a class, and has no real world experience to understand what she doesn't know The same can be applied to any number of trades and professions where someone has graduated, but is yet to experience the real world The experience will do her good in the long run, even if she is slightly hurt by your comments
