To go along with what others have said I would and do sometimes already play for nothing, as long as no one else is making, or what is made is going to a cause and not into someone's pocket

You just have to do the same![/quote] Strangely I posted a walk on by JJ link the other day in a JJ thread, i've always thought it is a perfect example of doing a cover your own way I know what you are saying, and in some situations covering a song and doing it differently is what is called for, and thats fun Personally I love flats and songs that sound right with them, but I do enjoy trying to mirror what is on the record (I mean CD, MP3 ) and that has mean torn between flats and rounds Getting both sounds out of one bass would be ideal for me, just not sure I can achieve it

Hi Im really digging flat strings right now, and whilst most of the stuff I play suits it, the odd songs dotted in the sets really rely on the bright sustain of round strings Id like to just gig one bass, and whilst most styles can be catered for within amp settings, this round/flat issue seems to be something that is only achievable by the bass, for me at least Does anyone else have this issue, have you got a solution ? I just love the sound of flats on my P bass right now Cheers for any thoughts

We played "cant stand losing you" at our last 3 gigs, and I am doing some gigs soon with another band who just lost their bassist, and "walking on the moon" is on the set list i've been given I really love "bombs away", best police song, but no one will know it, which obviously highlights the dark side of this thread, that as much as some of us love covers, we do shy away from putting to many obscure songs is our sets, which is a shame

I have public liability insurance through the MU.[/quote] This is most likely very true, however silly the red tape, if you have not ticked the boxes as the rules state for anything, you can end up in trouble Just make sure if a fire does start, that all your gear with stickers on goes up with it, then they can only do you for not having the test and not for putting false stickers on

Good news on the tour and orange involvement, be sure to post the gig locations and dates Not a very technical thought but, personally to play through a 810 orange on a big stage is one of those things to do before you die, i loved my 410 but it was to heavy

I tried line 6 whilst on my new rig quest over a year ago, and felt that whilst the preset sounds where good, they where line 6 sounds and not the basses, if that makes sense I know a few guitar players though, you love the presets, quite easy for covers gigs, just note the no. down that suits the song

Id say, unless you are in a position to be a pro, much like doddy and Jakesbass on here, covering all basses (sorry for the pun) Then, you had best stick to your day job, and progress the covers band idea within that, if you start to do well, you can perhaps alter you day job then, into something part time or less, but initially stick to it My day job is not music, but I am self employed, so I have all the same issues the music pros on here have, like nothing is long term, no holiday, sick pay or pension from the company, and often have to make choices as to what to agree to, then if something better comes up turn it down and stick to what you have already promised etc So don't burn your bridges, progress your day job, and passionately pursue the music and see if it takes over, don't jump to early You may even find, if music was your day job, you might not like it as much

Hopefully my lessons will get me on a firm grounding to get started in ernest.[/quote] Yeah, I understand the jot your own dots down as reminders, but strangely I don't often have trouble remembering how things go chords, riffs and rhythm wise (mostly) but have a big issue with structures, this is the area I really need some tools for Good luck with your lessons, I feel if I am ever really going to learn seriously I will need someone to help, but for now, its mostly as its been since the late 80s (only now its easier with the internet to learn songs, with clips an all, rather than kick rewinding tapes and lifting the needle on records ) Keep posting your progress Pete Cheers

Playing in a band situation doing covers I think I have nailed as much as possible without expanding on the finer points now, your never too old to learn although the wallet might disagree![/quote] I think its great that your taking a step back to do this, for me though, my desire to play somehow means that I constantly have a to learn list on my ipod, and each day bass time is working on getting these lines into my fingers, the shame is that the time consuming bit is learning structures, rather than lines, you can learn most of the parts of a pop song in 10 minutes, but remembering the which part goes where and hitting the changes without hesitation or replying on hearing others lead you is the hard part and im not sure reading will do anything to speed up structure learning? I maybe wrong Anyway , slow progress is better than none, and at the end of the day, I play covers at pubs and functions, reading will be great when I progress, but I don't think it will change my gigging situation, as I play those gigs with readers and non readers on other instruments

I think its perfectly OK to wish for a state the comment in a for sale ad 1. Its honest, regardless if you are selling for higher, lower or the same, you are simply stating this is what I paid X time ago, and this is the price its up for 2. Some gear, will hang around at a certain value for years, once its had its initial drop from new price, before perhaps climbing in value If the item is worth it , perhaps the owner could ask for more than they paid, but is offering it the same to be fair to other basschatters At the end of the day, if its not the right price it wont sell, and as long as comments are honest, then what is wrong with people making them Id only have issue with deception of history, prices and reasons why
