1. To go along with what others have said I would and do sometimes already play for nothing, as long as no one else is making, or what is made is going to a cause and not into someone's pocket
 2.
No they don't! I wouldn't use a JJ Burnell sound if my covers band wanted to do a Stranglers number. So just get "your" sound and play everything sounding like you. Listen to JJ playing Walk On By. He doesn't care about the sound of Dion Warwick's original recording; he just plays it like "him". You just have to do the same!
Strangely I posted a walk on by JJ link the other day in a JJ thread, i've always thought it is a perfect example of doing a cover your own way I know what you are saying, and in some situations covering a song and doing it differently is what is called for, and thats fun Personally I love flats and songs that sound right with them, but I do enjoy trying to mirror what is on the record (I mean CD, MP3 ) and that has mean torn between flats and rounds Getting both sounds out of one bass would be ideal for me, just not sure I can achieve it
 3.
Stick with them and ask yourself whether you really need the bright sounds.
Thanks guys for the replies I might just play flats one time, and see if anyone else notices, after all my ears are tuned to hearing the bass, it might only be me who notices the sustain has gone in the ballads and pop
 4. Hi Im really digging flat strings right now, and whilst most of the stuff I play suits it, the odd songs dotted in the sets really rely on the bright sustain of round strings Id like to just gig one bass, and whilst most styles can be catered for within amp settings, this round/flat issue seems to be something that is only achievable by the bass, for me at least Does anyone else have this issue, have you got a solution ? I just love the sound of flats on my P bass right now Cheers for any thoughts
 5. the Vintage name keeps catching me out, great idea by the company for a brand name £50 for a playable copy, good deal
 6. We played "cant stand losing you" at our last 3 gigs, and I am doing some gigs soon with another band who just lost their bassist, and "walking on the moon" is on the set list i've been given I really love "bombs away", best police song, but no one will know it, which obviously highlights the dark side of this thread, that as much as some of us love covers, we do shy away from putting to many obscure songs is our sets, which is a shame
 7.
I was told though (I don't know if this is correct, but it does make sense), that if someone was injured, electrocuted by my equipment, or it caused a fire. and they discovered that I'd just stuck some labels on the gear. Then it would be my fault, and any insurance claim would be thrown out. I have public liability insurance through the MU.
This is most likely very true, however silly the red tape, if you have not ticked the boxes as the rules state for anything, you can end up in trouble Just make sure if a fire does start, that all your gear with stickers on goes up with it, then they can only do you for not having the test and not for putting false stickers on
 8.
Here's Red Jackson in Guildford recently: Gene Vincent's 'Race With the Devil'...
Mate, I've often seen you on a saturday during last year in Guildford, nice to know your on basschat
 9.
The jazz, tele and amps are all hire equipment from Maurice Plaquet's, Uxbridge Rd, Shepherds Bush. The Stranglers never used their own gear when miming on TOTP.
Nice fact Are we to assume that JJ never played a jazz back then, but perhaps that was the closet bass to his look on hire that day?
 10. I posted this yesterday on another thread, its from the era of "that sound" Obviously there is the mime issue, but is this a bass he was getting that sound from too? Anyone know the story here, of have I got something wrong? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6yTRq_rJg4...feature=related
 11. Good news on the tour and orange involvement, be sure to post the gig locations and dates Not a very technical thought but, personally to play through a 810 orange on a big stage is one of those things to do before you die, i loved my 410 but it was to heavy
 12. I tried line 6 whilst on my new rig quest over a year ago, and felt that whilst the preset sounds where good, they where line 6 sounds and not the basses, if that makes sense I know a few guitar players though, you love the presets, quite easy for covers gigs, just note the no. down that suits the song
 13. I've managed convince 2 covers bands (1 rock, 1 pop) to let me put nice n sleazy in the set over the last few years, but both dropped it after a few gigs, because its not a crowd pleaser, but there was always some middle aged bloke with his arms folded who I know love it, shame, I love it Also never got bored of their version of walk on by http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrGb7sz8D3Y What bass is he playing here, never knew http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6yTRq_rJg4...feature=related
 14.
It's really worth noting that you are listening to 2 instruments that only play one note at a time... see what melody can do...!!!
That is amazing, no chords just 1 note each from 2 players, and it sounds like there is a jazz kit and keys behind it in my head, spooky
There is a lovely quote out there somewhere about the fact that SS used to play with Art Tatum (arguable the greatest jazz pianist of all time) and Tatum couldn't lose him even if he tried.
And there's me having to listen to 80s pop songs 5 times over, just so I don't get lost, I feel very small I've not listened to Jazz much for a long time, this makes me wonder why
 15. Sorry cant add to the thread, but just wondering, when this was first popular, was it simply a new take on the way a bass could look, or did they seriously promote the system as an improvement?
 16.
A key part of the distortion on his early sound was having a hole kicked in the speaker cone.
Well you learn something new everyday, great fact If anyone wants this mod done to their amp PM me for a price, all work with full years warranty
 17. Id say, unless you are in a position to be a pro, much like doddy and Jakesbass on here, covering all basses (sorry for the pun) Then, you had best stick to your day job, and progress the covers band idea within that, if you start to do well, you can perhaps alter you day job then, into something part time or less, but initially stick to it My day job is not music, but I am self employed, so I have all the same issues the music pros on here have, like nothing is long term, no holiday, sick pay or pension from the company, and often have to make choices as to what to agree to, then if something better comes up turn it down and stick to what you have already promised etc So don't burn your bridges, progress your day job, and passionately pursue the music and see if it takes over, don't jump to early You may even find, if music was your day job, you might not like it as much
 18. 1st: A home made fretless, planed timber for neck with hammerited ply body To go: A fender P with rounds Sound: A fender P with flats
 19. Things keep cropping up for me that mean a 5 would be handy Like, new song this week is "you might need somebody" in Eb But I keep resisting, surely you don't have to have 5 strings to play functions
 20.
If the only difference between the two amps is a tuner which won`t be used, and presets which won`t be used
I think a lot of owners use the presets, and the tuner is handy
 21.
Im still playing quite a bit too Lojo just doing the stuff i want to do for now though, I think in a pub band situation it would be useful for numbers you don't do all the time. If something crops up that hasn't been in the regular set for a while that has a part that is easily forgotten you can whip out the dots for the Intro, verse, chorus and middle eight and be up to speed in almost no longer than it takes to play the track. I think I have written your non us names in my MI book above the yank ones Bilbo tipex time although the fact I have hardly looked at it means I can't really blame anyone else! Hopefully my lessons will get me on a firm grounding to get started in ernest.
Yeah, I understand the jot your own dots down as reminders, but strangely I don't often have trouble remembering how things go chords, riffs and rhythm wise (mostly) but have a big issue with structures, this is the area I really need some tools for Good luck with your lessons, I feel if I am ever really going to learn seriously I will need someone to help, but for now, its mostly as its been since the late 80s (only now its easier with the internet to learn songs, with clips an all, rather than kick rewinding tapes and lifting the needle on records ) Keep posting your progress Pete Cheers
 22.
Now there's a good idea. Shame I don't have the chops for something like this...
I was thinking about this a few days back, im sure they are not looking for the most impressive solo performance, just someone who can hold a groove and most importantly engage with other players and sell the gear I might be wrong, but putting someone on a stand who will show off his full speed slap n tap stuff all day, would turn off most serious customers ?
 23.
That's the irony isn't it Lojo, Being too busy playing to learn how to read which is part of the against reading camps argument but I still think a basic knowledge for jotting down songs and riffs would help especially in the situations your in now with 40 tracks to learn. I have actually turned down at least one if not two good bands to try and free up some time at home to learn what my hopefully awesome teacher is going to show me! I'm not sure exactly what approach I'm going to take but the lessons will be based around theory, timing and staff reading. Playing in a band situation doing covers I think I have nailed as much as possible without expanding on the finer points now, your never too old to learn although the wallet might disagree!
I think its great that your taking a step back to do this, for me though, my desire to play somehow means that I constantly have a to learn list on my ipod, and each day bass time is working on getting these lines into my fingers, the shame is that the time consuming bit is learning structures, rather than lines, you can learn most of the parts of a pop song in 10 minutes, but remembering the which part goes where and hitting the changes without hesitation or replying on hearing others lead you is the hard part and im not sure reading will do anything to speed up structure learning? I maybe wrong Anyway , slow progress is better than none, and at the end of the day, I play covers at pubs and functions, reading will be great when I progress, but I don't think it will change my gigging situation, as I play those gigs with readers and non readers on other instruments
 24. I think its perfectly OK to wish for a state the comment in a for sale ad 1. Its honest, regardless if you are selling for higher, lower or the same, you are simply stating this is what I paid X time ago, and this is the price its up for 2. Some gear, will hang around at a certain value for years, once its had its initial drop from new price, before perhaps climbing in value If the item is worth it , perhaps the owner could ask for more than they paid, but is offering it the same to be fair to other basschatters At the end of the day, if its not the right price it wont sell, and as long as comments are honest, then what is wrong with people making them Id only have issue with deception of history, prices and reasons why
