Ive got a lovely MIJ 50th year Jazz bass, 3TS Its passive, but if thats your bag, then this has everything else you would wish for Ive seen and heard special jazzes worth 2k, but there not worth the £1500 or so more than this IMO I know you've done the Jap thing, but they do offer great value I may put it up for sale soon, I seem to always want to gig a P neck, and have a desire for a stingray

Yes, my reading practice has hit a wall due to having to learn around 40 new songs for various covers bands, so any practice time now has been devoted to working those out Still I made progress at the end of last year, and have something to build on at least How are the other YTS boys doing ?

I've only just checked this thread for the first time, now I want a blue one Anyone gigged one yet?
-
I sold my VMJ for £160, which for what it was, was amazing value I can only comment on the VMJ, and for what they cost, they are a great instrument A cheaper, but better bass than that would be an amazing deal indeed
I thought exactly the same. Could listen to him talk all day long.
I cant understand him, great player though

Convert what they play, ie know the real key rather than their fretted key and play in standard tuning if possible, otherwise you may have to adjust the set up on your bass each time you play with them and then need a standard tuning What sort of songs are you doing for them to do this?

i know ive played pubs where no profit was made ad equally some who made a killing on the night got a list of gigs and dosh from a band recently for the coming year and one pub venue has £150 + bucket apperently the bucket usually gets 50 - 150 in it, so thats not a bad idea

I had a Dave Holland album once, nice to fall asleep to, think its was called emerald something, double bass though not electric
-
its nice when you here that someone has a special bass, like thier dad brought it for them in 1975 or like a guy i know you brought a new P in the early 80s and has only played that since but you cant make these things happen or buy knowing it will yes there are keepers, but i think its more in the circumstance, than a quality that an individual bass owns you cant sell a keeper, or youd not be selling it unless your starving
For my next bass i'm either going to buy a second hand Squier vintage modified jazz, and put in some bartolini's and a high mass bridge. Or a fender jazz standard Any opinions?
ive owned both a VMJ and a MIM, and either bass as standard is fine I suggested playing out before spending out on upgrades, upgrading is great, but I sometimes feel we talk ourselves into it being a must

I learned that we should study basslines and not the bassist

Has anyone entered the competition to work as a demonstrator on the ampeg stand (and walk away with a 2k rig) It states you have to upload a video demonstrating your playing, I guess they don't want you to show off just look like you could sell gear?

It is possible to have a great band where no one is that outstanding as an individual, but have a band of outstanding talent and one weak link to mess it up But if I have to answer the question, a decent front person, be it either a great singer or vocalist, is the most important Of course unless its instrumental
I'm sorry,it's great that you're locking with the new drummer, but I really have a problem with referring to them as 'Knuckle draggers' and 'Neanderthals',even if it is in jest. Like I've said many times before, many of the best musicians that I know are drummers.
Most the drummers I know make the jokes about themselves, its not anyone else doing it, perhaps not only are they often great musicians but also have little ego in most cases

Perhaps he is not comfortable miming, and the tuning peg fiddling is part of that, certainly seems freer when he is playing live And if the bass where live, if he did have a tuning issue that meant he had to tweak it that many times, due to the minimal notes in the song, he could have changed note positions to avoid the dodgy tuner string I like the band, including most of the stuff they have done since there hay day, but i want to turn the radio over when this comes on
Yep, one gone and the fretless is going next Saturday. I felt like a change and I found a gorgeous Jazz at Far East Guitars. Still, you know what will happen. It will be in the FS section in a few months because I'll be after a Steinberger or summat
Was that the red 62 RI ?
There are much cheaper ways of getting a temporary buzz.
My Ric never had any buzzing Although it was temporary, although I wish I tried flats on it before I passed it on, I've a feeling Id have liked that better
The mid-life crisis market is a very lucrative one, especially for aspirational items such as motorbikes, sport cars, and musical instruments (rock and roll ones, can't see anyone splash out on a top of the range flame maple veneered bassoon to cure their crisis). People are cashing in on that!
A few years ago I brought a Ric, on the turn of 40 years old, for me that was an expensive non essential purchase, so obviously friends close to me started making jokes about midlife crisis My wife bumped into one of these friends, who made the comment to her about the guitar purchase in reference to my mid life crisis She replied "well if thats all he is going to do, he can buy 3"

With all the debates about MIM vs MIA or super sadowskys etc etc I was wondering what the cheapest bass we could confirm was, being used in an expensive situation I mean, in a famous band or a backing band playing in a venue that seats 10s of 1000s etc Anyone know of a MIM being used at a sell out stadium gig? or a cheapo used on recording that become known to all ?
-
I have a 2009 MIM , a CIJ and a MIJ, all I love, with the CIJ P being my favorite, but that may only be because it has flats on and the others don't I have played some expensive basses that were horrid in my humble opinion Nowadays, if your getting into playing or getting back into it at a bedroom or pub level, there is no need to worry, buy a cheap bass that you feel comfortable on and don't get into detail I've owned a lovely squier, and played a cheap tanglewood for years

Only Harry Hill could resolve this one, Flea or Mark, which is better, only one way to find out .................. fight
Whether it is active or passive won't be a barrier to your learning or you joining a band
So true, almost like choosing what football boots to wear, whilst they have some minor impact on the end result it wont change what you can do with the ball and how you think the game Its strange these days with forums and choice, when I started, any bass or guitar with whatever faults was good enough, due to being better than nothing I guess its another step in progress from the I learned on a tea chest Oh, and Passive is better
(mostly) it's more remembering the notes.
It may be worth clarifying what you know, for example are you remembering a string of notes that make a riff or line, which mean nothing else to you other than an order of notes, or do you understand and "see" chords within the line For me, I cant read and only have a basic chord knowledge, but I've played enough to see patterns I already know every time I learn a song, even If I cant technically name it Obviously the more you know the more patterns you will see and understand and therefore be able to remember easier as you have a way of arrange it in your mind Having seen the developments of my own understanding of songs and the quickness to do grasp or work out a new song, I can only imagine how amplified that will be for some who is truly knowledgeable about theory
As a bass player I was disappointed seing him live at the height of his career, back in the late 80's at a Police concert in Rome, with a bass strapped on his neck but with a back up bass player playing real basslines, right behind him in the shadows.
Seriously ? and if so was this common ? ????
