1. Sorry im not in Doddys or Bilbos league but "all blues" and "mr clean" and "blue bossa" are worth looking at, great tunes without tons of changes you wont be used to hearing as a non jazzer
 2. Anyone who puts clips up of themselves with that kind of attitude has to accept some stick Equally though, I bet he has got his fair share of clueless admirers, simply due to his in your face attitude Is it possible to see any of him in a full gospel band situation, as that would be fun? The bottom line is without breaking any laws or hurting anyone, he has talkbass and our attention, which I guess is why he uploads
 3. This may have been covered before, but whilst on the subject of P or J sound, when both basses where released, surely the the original thudding P bass was closer to the sound of a jazz bass instrument than the Jazz bass was ?
 4.
Maybe we could block book a load of seats and go and support Wayne.
Not a bad idea, the thing I hate about going to the theatre is that they always hide the band and you have to stare at a load of actors and dancers, id rather watch the bassist and the drummer
 5. The title of the thread is about the "sound" and we are all making contributions about why the sound is different but struggling to put into words what the sound is, for obvious reasons Strangely, the only thing any of us can do and no one else can do for us, is listen to a J or P and hear it for ourselves If the OP is simply asking what does a J or P sound like compared to each other , see the above Having said that, the reasons why debate is interesting Its also funny how there is always some subtle suggestions in these topics that Ps are played by a picking 3 chord punk types and a J is played by a real muso does anyone really believe that to be true ?
 6. Strangely, I've never played queen records at home for pleasure its never been my thing, but playing queen songs in a covers context is very enjoyable, there is something about the songs that is right for a band situation and enjoyable bass parts that I can relax into Obviously i am only a pubs parties and functions weekend hobbyist, so I cant help re your mammoth gig, but good luck with it
 7.
I recently learned Pink Floyd's Money as my misses loves it. She actually doesn't like it any more as it took a while to get it right to the record. Drat....! I should have learned it with the headphones on
Simple solution then to stop her playing any albums you hate, just practice them for a while
 8. Sadly I don't own these anymore, to heavy, although that is a small price to pay for what they sound like
 9. I understand the feeling is in the fingers part, but there is something about the way you record it, as I said it the tone is great through my mac speakers, and that cant be said for all clips, regardless of the talent in the fingers for the guy (or girl) playing
 10. A lot people refer to basses as guitars, and they are, although it is mostly referred to as just a "bass" for sure Don't get offended when someone without much instrument knowledge just sees it as a "guitar", to them it is, so nothing wrong is meant by it If you didn't know your hammers, a hammer is a hammer, but a carpenter uses a claw hammer, a bricky a club hammer and so on Focus on the bit that says "hey NICE g.....r" , seems they are trying to compliment your instrument or playing, so I hope they don't find out you are calling them "idiots"
 11. Will I get an amazing, never seen deal on a stingray at this event, or will prices be just like visiting a shop on any normal day?
 12.
A couple of mistakes, but I didn't want to spend too much time on it:
I've posted my admiration for your playing before, but now i am wondering what your recording method is for these clips, the mix of your bass over the tune is good, but I still cant believe how great the tone of your bass is just coming through my standard Mac speakers, most clips on you tube don't have a tone like that
 13.
Anyone suggesting the wood has a bigger part to play in the amplified sound has been eating the funny mushrooms IMO....
Obviously woods have specific acoustic tone, which can be deep and beautiful or hollow and dead, but I have often wondered how, if at all, this can find its way into the string vibrations and therefore into the picked up signal
 14. Don't think I was taught it (except by the experience of doing it, if that counts) - Don't judge anyone to be either good or bad at anything by how they look, or what they say, be it knowledge of subject, music or sports (inc. fighting)
 15.
Remarkable consensus so far: Precision

slightly clankier and less focussed sound but with a bit more bottom end
big traditional boots
a full rich tone with great presence
a 'fruity' richness
rough, dirty, solid
very 'direct' and 'mellow'
thick, heavy on the fundamental
Precisions explode
that (Precision) wallop.
Guinness - rich and full bodied
Precisions go thumpity thump
P's kinda go VVVvvvvvv
A P goes 'Womp!"
Jazz

slightly more refined particularly in the mids
big traditional shoes
far more middy
an edgy rasp
Neck pup jazz = smooth, clean, hollow
the J has the ability to 'spread' it's tone.
Jazz's sparkle
lager & lime - cuts through nicely
Jazzes go plinky-plunk
J's kinda go Dnggggggg
A Jazz goes 'Wooomp"

So if we where to then break each instrument down into MIM, M/CIJ, MIA etc, we would be producing a large document (unless all the words apply across the board, in which case im glad ive only MIM and MIJ) To add another thought to the original question .. I have a nice jazz bass here which I never take to gig as I feel so comfortable on a P bass, and love the sound, but I decided to play out with my jazz this weekend just to do it cause I never do I shocked myself, at home, and through phones, my P basses sound so much righter than the J, but in a band situation the Jazz was very impressive
 16. go and score then listen to sly and robbie sensi dub volume 4 Is it original music or do you have the names of any covers you will be playing?
 17. I know from experience that qualified art professionals will a call a statue "craft" and not "art" if its 3d and to scale and is beyond something they can personally pull off, regardless if it sold for a good fee and got displayed for the public Surely creating music is an art form, regardless if its complex or simple, made for pleasure or profit, or even if you like it of not
 18. Im not sure how we got from "covering lines exactly or not" to "i don't watch comedies, cause there is no point" ? Comedy is surely similar to music, books and films? it can provide a complete escape from reality or can do the complete opposite and make you think about real issues, its just different platforms Whilst on the comedy subject I doctored this quote from a well known comedy to sum up some of the views I've just read on Good Times (not mine BTW) ... I think Good Times set a new high in altruistic, self-indulgent, bullshit, mollycoddled, you know... mother-my-dark-instinct disco music. I thought it was a piece of pimply sh*t from the worst kind of city ghetto, probably populated by winos, junkies and just general all-round f***-ups. Im up for Bilbo hosting a chat show
 19.
Those comments have really not helped my GAS re these.
Yes a ric looker that sounds like a P floats my boat also
 20.
It's funny, I'm starting to see the readers vs the none readers divide again.. He he. I'm not sure you'll guess which I am :-)
That maybe true, but im not sure why it would appear here, as it seems we are talking about covering middle of the road pop music and if we stray from the recorded take and id guess both camps would approach this by ear and experience I am only starting to learn the dots, but I can already see that the books of dots I have don't give you more than the basics and you have to listen for the fills and frills anyhow (just like tab ) Do readers approach learning simple enough covers different to us peasants ?
 21. really get at , not so much about getting bored playing them, but the fact that once you have covered a favorite, you cant sit back at home and enjoy a listen in quite the same way again
 22.
I remember seeing Pigbag at the Glasgow Nightmoves club back in 1981 - they weren't going to do "Papas got a brand new Pigbag" - which was why most of the crowd were there. Apparently they were sick to death of doing it!! They did it eventually..Imagine how Ozzy feels about "Paranoid" and "War Pigs"..at least Status Quo get to change the lyrics of their one tune
I agree, but in some ways it annoys me, like when radio stopped doing creep live and moaned about how boring it was doing it over and over again, well most of us in our work have to do the same thing each day for years, its their right to choose not to, if they can still make a living doing other things, but you hope that some sort of humility is displayed towards the punters who made them big and love certain tunes
 23. Inspired by Bilbos view on most classic songs we cover just wondering what happens to your personal enjoyment of a song once you've gigged it a few times For me, I have sometimes suggested favorites of mine to bands, but somehow after taking them apart and playing them, songs I have loved for years and turned the radio up for become "oh no not again" How does this effect you guys
 24.
Good Times is essentially two riffs which are 4 bars long, The only thing that is even credible is the bass line and that, whilst it is iconic, is three notes on the beat followed by what is essentially a dorian minor scale (EF#GABC#DE) followed, in turn, by a slightly more interest lick on the A using the sixth and dominant seventh.
You've just listed the ingredients for a formula that gets all age groups dancing at every function i've ever played it at , but having said that they also all dance some modern hits I consider rubbish Bilbo, if your ever round my way, I'll shout you and change your mind about fish n chips (assuming my local doesn't change hands and go back to the norm)
 25.
I was trying really hard to get the basslines spot on as per the original recorded version. Then you hear a live album version and it can be completely different!
So true of most of the covers I play, I'll more often that not check out live versions of songs Im to learn, often they give great ideas for fills etc And for covers bands like I play in, it can also depend on what other instruments are in the mix to weather you make the line more or less busy
