Finally got my CIJ Jazz bass on the road , dimazios , kiogon loom and Cobalt flats. The bass has a fatter neck than the thin ones which I don't get on with so this is perfect for me has illness is causing me to struggle sometimes with my love for fat chuncky P necks. So many people I have read say you can get it sound like a P , if that's you what's your advice for setting bass and amp controls , even just to get near id be happy. I don't want to have a P v J debate , I've got Ps and I know how to use one , just need to figure out my Jazz now Ok it's a pointless silly question , a bass is a bass and I also love my Ray , but I'm off sick for the first time in my life and can now worry about silly things like this

I used to throw a bit of sponge under my p bass strings for some Motown in the set when I used rounds , it was a fairly solid lump but only about 1/2" wide , took seconds to push it and up against the bridge , didn't have to worry about intonation or re tuning at that width

Yep , I don't think anyone who can't read but uses Tab would think that it's better than reading music . However if you've not learned growing up then there is a decision to make if you need or want to put the time into developing the skill.

I had back issues over a number of years , turned out I fractured it in a fall which I only discovered after a scan for other issues Anyway , physio really helped me learn how to strengthen the muscles and about standing postions for long periods such as playing I also think strap type makes a massive difference with a heavier bass You might already know the above but good luck

The hardest thing about putting a band together is finding people who gel , not finding people with enough musical ability. This guy sounds like he is not a viable band member regardless of musical ability .

Yep there is something about a clean Mark Bass that lets the real bass sound shine

Tab id guess is mainly used by people who can't read , it's a diy tool that can be effective if you've got a good ear and need a bit of direction to speed things up rather than a complete solution with no work on your part. It helps me out from time to time for sure , but it's rarely completely correct. I don't think there is any doubt that notation is a more professional system , and Everyone would benefit by understanding it , but it's something I've never learned and can't justify the time on now , but it's never stopped me playing in any band I wanted to at my weekend functions covers level. If I had my time again though I'd learn it from day 1 along with playing

Mp3s through my basic Hi fi amp and B&W speakers (all a good 15 years old) sound really clear for bass and treble

I only have 2 hard cases , but have a multi bass stand and wall hanger , so they on display After all basses are for looking at aren't they ?

It's not original so you can't base your decision on trying to keep it original If you go for a solid refinish you'll have to be more careful with it that if you leave it , this is why I like to by basses that already have wear If you want a different colour or finish then go for it , but I'd would either leave it or restore it to an original stock look and colour All just personal opinions of course

[/quote] I guess there are many levels to reading , and sight reading with no previous knowledge of the feel of the song is another level to using dots and tabs to work something out ahead of time. I played in a band once where I was the only person who could not sight read so I had to know my stuff upfront , this made me slightly insecure but the keyboard player joked that if the music fell off the stands I'd be the only one to carry on playing

The only thing that counts is that it's the choice of the player / band to set out to achieve what they want , and not what others say is right or wrong This means no criticism of those that do try to recreate and none to those that play it different.

No one can answer if you can do it or not , only you can gauge that , but I have been in similar situations Either way you have to make a call today or at least very soon either way Start the communion with the band now
