Strangely just finished chatting to a guitarist Im playing the pub with tonight, both of us at some point this week had forgotten we where doing it, although that might be age I find the same as playing footy, often when you cant be bothered or think it might be a non event, if often turns out to be a great event Just as the big ones you look forward to can sometimes not turn out so great The OP though, I believe is commenting on the drummer who always feels like this with regular gigs, so either he is a very negative talking person anyway, or he needs to take a break or find a musical situation that inspires him

what a great idea, looks better than the black n orange one, wonder how long before one ends up for sale in the private market somehow

I agree, there are many people that have great ears, but are not blessed with a tuneful voice, they seem to be unconnected If you know you cant sing, then its your ears telling you so, sadly we see plenty of examples on our TVs of people who cant sing, but don't have good ears to tell them so either I doubt it works the other way round

Went to a panto on sunday for my daughters birthday Hearing live bass and drums without being able to see the players seems a little sad, they really should have seats where you can see the band as well Panto was good though

They are a strange band, even the most simple of songs say "its only rock n roll" just has something about it feel wise that is hard to emulate as a band, even though each member may play their own part correctly, very loose yet exactly right Its interesting how Wyman gets slated, but his lines always seem to be just enough to compliment and carry the song, what do the critics think he should have added? any more may have been to much This isolated clips are great, I hope more people start sticking more of this on the net

2 or 3 posts about tabs, and no sign of the tab police, must be the cutbacks
Mark King using TC amp and cabs....... plenty of top end there....
around 17.35 "obviously we've got some cut down gear here" he says The bass tone coming through my just computer speakers from that clip is so good

I may have missed a post, but has the OP been able to sound more funky on anything else he has tried, at a friends, in a shop etc, at least the would go some way to limit it to his gear over fingers Try your bass in another amp etc, try to narrow it down, otherwise you may spend out and not get anywhere
The damn thing's out of tune FFS. I thought it was punk that was played primarily out of tune. I knew there was a reason I hated the Stones /rant
I find occasionally when learning stuff by ear off you tube etc you have to tweak your tuning slightly to come in line with the audio Its not a problem, just tweak your tuning to suit the song you are listening to

Slightly off topic, but in a room last night with supplied backline, trace rig, but I brought my RH450 as I was trying out some settings, anyway RH450 DI into Trace combo, what a sound I did not mess with the EQ on the trace and took no notice of it, but i was really taken by the sound it produced for every setting I had the RH put through it, the trace just did something extra Not sure if it was the trace amp or drivers Strange as ive never been a straight trace guy

Walk on by, Stranglers version always makes me smile Stomp - Brothers Johnson, love this kind of line, just enough to really grove, but not take over, loads of other examples +1 to loads that have already been mentioned and that will be, I love bass

Im glad you guys are getting on with the reading skills, i'm still at the identify the dots stage and want to get that down to know on sight, and its going well Had a session last night with a band ahead of a gig, and was chatting to our fairly new keyboard player, who is well trained in theory, turns out he has played double bass in orchestras for 25 years (i had no idea, as we only know him as a piano player who does restaurants) so I'm going to make sure I pick his brains Strangely though, he asked why I was learning to read, and I said something along the lines of "so I can work out more complicated lines without having to rewind 100 times", he replied "most of it isn't that detailed anyway" I checked a book today, it has the music to "whats going on", it seems it does cover the basic line, but not detail all the different subtle changes Jamerson plays Does this mean that, at least for covering most mainstream music, the written sheets lack the detail ? I'm not suggesting we go back to the start of the thread, but I am just wondering if as Tab, you still have to fill in the blanks by ear if you want the detail ? 4 , most the music I cover was done on a 4 so its all i need Occasionally I come across a singer who changes the key of a well known classic, which then means a 5 could keep the bass line sounding more "correct", but not enough to buy one I did play one in the 90s as was commanded by the band leader (owner), but since that project I never really had a reason to use one so the B would just end up as a thumb rest Never rule anything out though, things change, but for now a basic 4 string P does me
But it's a U2 tribute act. We'd have to then do everything lower keys, and some, if not most, of the songs would suffer by doing that. p.s, the original is in C# !!
To be honest, its gonna be difficult being a tribute act with that guy fronting, you'll have to all d tune or something, to try to keep the guitar playing what he should If your keen to give it a go with this singer, perhaps find some songs that suit his voice regardless if they are U2 or something else, and have pop at gigging a varied basic covers set, then if perhaps you can evolve from there
I tried to put one of these up, messed it up quite badly, and in a fit of rage hammered a lump out of the wall, then took said item outside, and smashed it to bits with the hammer. Did I feel better - yes, even when I was having to fill the hole in the wall a few wks later. I`ve found that stands suit my temperamnet far better!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78b67l_yxUc...feature=channel Most of us have done this in some form or other - Most of the fixings i've seen supplied with these items I would bin for better

Pete, looks like you are really making good ground with this Im still doing the name the note without thinking thing, but hope soon to move on to basics of note length Any links to simple covers / standards for some starter music to mess around with, all i got here is motown type scores, which I only got for the guitar chords
I don’t have a problem with Tabs, but my experience is that most are wrong, where as it is opposite can be said with written parts. It seems that people who can score have better ears.
Im not sure who writes most tabs, but id guess it is mostly done by teenagers, with time on their hands, who maybe wont bother to get it spot on, just the basics and upload it quickly for a bit of online kudos Having said that though, they can really help save a bit of time if your in a rush to learn a cover, point you in the right direction, but if you have not got a good enough ear to know if its wrong or fill in the blanks or frills, then your performance is going to suck even if someone gives you a spot on tab

I cant remember, but most likely utter b******s, or a stupid question
Whilst Basschat is a kindof community, where we should all hopefully treat each other with respect, I always look at items I`m buying in this way: Is it worth the asking price to me? if yes, I really don`t care how much the seller paid for it - that`s really not of consequence to me as the buyer. If I`d previously seen something go for, say £250, that I wanted, but didn`t get there in time, now being sold for £400, provided the £400 was either a good, or fair price, it`s just my tough luck for not being quick enough when it was £250. That`s life - it`s not always fair. Another thing to consider maybe, when someone is selling something ridiculously low on here, does anyone point out that the market value is much higher, so the seller should maybe raise the price?
Fair enough, but if the guy who brought it quickly for £250 is just constantly scanning the site all day to snap up, just to re list at a higher price, then that to me is abusing the community spirit of the forum If someone does sell something low to get a quick sale, to pay a car repair bill or the like, then it would be nice to see the instrument go to a grateful home, and perhaps even sold later again at the same price (original owner may be able to buy back) and not to someone who can let it sit longer to wait for a better price, who has no intention of using or seeing how they get on with the instrument I wonder if the said people who are abusing the for sale section (if indeed there are any) ever "donate" to the site after the sale?
I use 5 of them in mu music room, no issues, I just use bigger screws than are provided with it. I was scared sh*tless of using them, but loads of people on here have had them for a while with no issues.
I am a carpenter by trade and we recently did an extension which was a music room for a client, finals included hanging brackets for expensive gibsons and fenders I made sure the fixings where all more than adequate, and refused to use any plasterboard fixings, ie either into timber stub or masonry only, basically so if a kid pulls a guitar the bracket would go before the fixing Use them at home also, though not the hurcules ones, which seem safer

Anyone got experience of bringing basses back from States/Canada?
Think about it, the government here is eager to raise more cash from the things we buy (hence rising VAT rates etc etc). They are absolutely looking to make sure no high value items enter the UK without them getting their cut. The government will slack and drag their feet when it comes to paying out to you but they'll chase you tooth and nail to empty your pockets!
Where is the line between a buying guitar whilst on holiday visiting a musical tourist spot in the states as a souvenir, much like you might buy a bongo drum in africa, and importing -
