A taste of honey with a hunny playing a jazz...
lojo replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Im a fan of disco, but I had no idea she played bass, never seen any footage before Learn something every day I guess -
Its great for when your working at the PC with no bass in hand, just play once every now and then Im finding it is really helping, shame you have to click it, id love to play the random notes instead What we need is a random note on the stave generator that will set a bar or 2 of notes to play along to at a time, and at a tempo set by the user (slow for the YTS guys ) I still find I am using fixed points such as D in the middle and the Fs high and low, then very quickly working out in my head from that I hope that a few weeks of this and I will think C rather than know its next to D, hope this makes sense Why did I not do this years ago?

Jakesbass, Jakesbass And Thrice Jakesbass
lojo replied to jakenewmanbass's topic in Tutors Available
Apologies Jake, it just twigged I should have posted some feedback before Anyway, the following is a similar to something I wrote in another thread Went to see Jake a while back as a 41 year old who had been playing off an on since the 80s as self taught only, and really wanted an assessment Jake gave me some really good pointers at things that where limiting me (such as right hand speed) But also gave me confidence in the things I had learnt and developed well (such as left hand use, even though I didn't know I was doing ok) So very helpful indeed Can totally recommend him, I only wish id someone like Jake to help me when I was 16 -
Hi Im desperate to buy a proper TC electronics RS 210 cover, but everyones out of stock Cheers

Thought Id start a new thread for those of us inspired by the other thread to learn to read bass notes, forgive if this is not required, but it is a change of topic So far, it seems to be Silddx, StingrayPete and myself on the YTS (hope Im not the only one old enough to know what this means) This is a link I just posted on the other thread Its a great online name the note game quiz, lets you click on the answer as a dot appears, Im hooked http://www.studybass.com/tools/bass-clef-notes/

this is great for when you've no bass in hand, dots appear and you have to click the letter of note, better than pac man http://www.studybass.com/tools/bass-clef-notes/ I just got bass clef master, so the rankings are too easy to attain, but its a really helpful tool

3 (or maybe less songs) but how long hanging around before / after sometimes we do have to honor a YES we have said stupidly othertimes we have to say NO when someone is expecting us to do something we have not agreed to
I have got the pic to upload now.(see above post) It sounds like you are nearly there silddx. I dont have as much time as I would like spare this week but I will do what I can, Its a marathon not a sprint as they say! Just noticed it has removed all the text from my last post now I have added the picture! I cant be bothered to write it out again.....
Made some progress with the notes, but in chaos here, near finished converting part of my garage into a music room, its now plastered, so hopefully I can move in next weekend and set everything up permanently Then I can practicing reading and playing everyday, no excuse Well done Pete and Sliddx, right behind you
Well, it's been rather a long time coming, but it's tommorrow night, 7 till 10ish, so if you all think of me perhaps the power of collective thought will keep me calm. Actually I've got to say that, what ever happens, the process has been very good for me. I think it's been my most intense period of development and practicing ever and I'm probably playing better than I ever have. (I'll know soon if that is well enough). Also what a stonking bass line Grapevine has!
Remember you are auditioning them as well, suss them out also, and the dynamics among them, if you can play those lines well you will find an amateur band that will take you I used to love playing take me to the river
have lost count of the amount of people i have met in kitchens at partys who knew jimi hendrix
A drunk guy told me once his mate used to play lead guitar for Jimi Hendrix, I just nodded alot if I remember

Thats really great, my son loves this stuff Will let Doddy tell Chewy not to use tab, im keeping out of it, seen what those Wookies do when they get upset

Its always nice to get a compliment, or someone from a general crowd who even notices the bass doing something to enhance the songs Usually the singer, or lead player who does his best a ruin the songs during the non lead parts gets all the attention after the gig But as bassists we are there to make everyone look good are we not

This maybe slightly off topic still, but i think when putting FT in the for sale section, you should have to state a cash value, it doesn't mean you have to accept a cash sale, but I assume that if you get a trade offer, both parties would have to set in their minds a cash value of both basses in order to establish an agreement of a straight swap or a top up of cash one way or another I might put my jazz bass up for a trade for a precision or stingray, I cant do a deal and offer to top up a deal with a stingray if I don't first convert it to cash prices in my head first

BASSHIVE, social network for bass player (like facebook!)

Does it have groove vs theory debates? -
I use the Rh450 with a Rs212 which is really good, I add the 210 for some gigs now, but the 212 alone is great for what I do I think you will find good and bad views on both the mark bass and the TC stuff, having also own a mark bass head (not cabs) and judging by the range of players who use both makes, I don't think either can be judged as awful But clearly, there is no one who can say the you would love or hate either, as this stuff does seem to be very personal (unless your talking ashdown mag )
I have decided to try Jakes approach too and have sent my parents to WH Smith for some manuscript paper to start doodling some dots down on while they are out shopping tomorrow.( Im nearly 33 but cant go near town on a saturday!) Like lojo says there is no rush for me either and I wont get stuck in fully until my book comes as I dont want to learn something wrong as its always harder to unlearn it again IME.
I found this http://www.blanksheetmusic.net/

We got into a few local pubs, and initially said pay us X but if takings are good pay us more, and 2 on first night £50 & £70 more than X, we are back for the 4th time in one of them in Dec Also landlords know each other, if you have a good night in one, make sure you ask who else in the trade they can recommend you too, everyone loves to recommend, be it a band or an honest plumber I've not played originals for 15 years (hope to again sometime), but I remember the circuits venues being very different Most of the pubs we play now have real party atmospheres with the covers, we slip a few rare things in, so based on that I guess you could get away with a few originals in the set But a whole set of unknown material in the places we do would not produce the atmosphere that gets the beer pumps and wine flowing making the landlord happy We have enough gigs as we cant do loads, but if we did wish to push it I guess its easier for someone to click a link for 10 seconds than mess around with a CD, so I guess we would make a website, is that the done thing these days?
If you want to do that, fine. But I can honestly say that that 'alpha tab' looks completely useless. It's not a matter of snobbery-I just feel that to recommend it to a beginner is bad advise. Sorry,if that offend you.
I understand your point about advice, assuming you mean if Tab gets them by then they may not see the need to learn to read, I wish I had had someone to help me and advise me to learn to read, but I didn't Equally Tab cant be called useless either, as clearly it does communicate a sequence of notes and speeds up the learn by ear process, limited yes but not completely useless Someone starting out can come on this forum and be given tips on Tab reading as Daz did, so they can play smoke on the water with their mates quickly, and also see plenty of posts about reading and the doors that that can open too Then that person can decide for themselves which path to take Doddy, Did you learn to read early on, or have you played and gigged as a non reader and then decided to learn and achieved reading skills later?
I am of course available for 1-1 tuition and I have had really nice comments from most of the basschatters I've taught, so despite feeling like an over arching bore I must be doing something right
I too can highly recommend Jake for lessons, I had a two hour session, all be it 25 years to late, got assessed etc. Jake not only gave me pointers which where holding me back (right hand speed) but also made me feel very confident about what I had self learned well even though I didn't know it (left hand) so positive stuff As noted yesterday, last night I started to learn to sight read, I wont forget the notes I focused on and where they are Im going to learn by sight all the notes without thinking or translating in my mind etc, as per Bilbos wise words above, once I have done that I will start with rhythm, no stress no time limits but progress each week Cheers guys for the debates, it has helped me, despite these threads appearing to be non productive sometimes, they are
(ABBAABAABABBAABABABBABABAABAB, for instance)
Is that an advanced AABA jazz structure ? Not seriously, i get it, thanks and will focus on those very 2 notes tonight for starters Quite excited EDIT: this thread has suddenly become very positive, thought theory vs groove, what's better was gonna get solved the Harry Hill way

Now i am confused, which book Tonight I am going to get some bass scores for lines I don't know, or don't know that well and start to work out the notes If someone wrote the letters for 1/4 or 8th notes, I could read and play in time as I know the fret board well, so I am going to aim to start to associate dots with letters When I can decide what book then I can start learning to understand the rhythm and so on I cant see me using this in my covers bands, but I do play in church and sometimes I am working from sheets, strangely following the chords at the top of the sheets I am starting to look at the dots to get the feel, even though I don't understand what I see, I am starting to anticipate what the rest of the band are going to do based on what I see ahead on the sheet, that may sound weird but its happening Based on that I think I may as well go for it, I am confident, setting myself the goal to read and play basic rhythm pattens in real time This thread has inspired me, because my posts have always had me say, if you have talent, you may as well learn to read, so I may as well take my own advice, not saying i've talent, but I am playing already at least No promises, as I've got a job, kids, bands, footy and so on, but as someone said 20 mins a day, (i spend more than that on this forum ) Just a note re books, perhaps the guys on here who have shown interest can buy different ones, we can start a thread sharing some info and perhaps swap books by the postman a few months down the line
