1. generally yes, but recently at a function as a guest i resisted the temptation to get close and look, i left not even knowing what amp the bassist had (though Id did have a chat to him after about his stingray, which he brought in the 80s) so i guess that some form of recovery
2. I like the look of some relic jobs, but I could never buy something that was not genuine wear , I would however be happy to buy something with a finish that would wear quickly
3.
I think you win the prize for the weirdest most unanswerable question ever raised on Basschat
yes, and how sad Im I to attempt to add to this debate Bite em in the car on the way to every gig or session is the answer, oh and .25mm max id say
4. RE: Clapton, you have to be able to close your eyes and think thats a great noise, not wow im watching Eric Clapton, last nights session did not do that but, all great players, who keep going over the years should be allowed to try loads of things, some of which may appeal to them and not to most of the listeners, you can't expect to like everything someone does, just because they have legendary status Having said that, there are a ton of guitar players id listen to before Clapton these days, but he did write / co write and record some amazing stuff in his time RE: Jools, was there not a rumor that one band got it agreed that they would play the show if Jools promised not to jam with them? Not sure if its Jools or the BBC stopping the show from being more roots, but surely if anyone can get the powers to push shows in that direction it would be Mr. Holland who could
5. I have some pretty good large speakers and an amp, I was hoping to mix it all on a small mixer, DI from guitars, drums etc, and then have that all run through the amp as one mix? I know its not very professional, but I thought it might work ok without having to spend out on to much new kit, then we can play at the same sound level as Id listen to CDs / movies etc.
6. Taking a break and thought id share this as i am excited Converting the back of my garage into a music room Please share any thoughts for ideas Plans basically for home office, electric drum kit, keys and guitars going through std hi fi system for fairly quite rehearsals and song writing etc Boy is also taking up the drums
7.
The laws that govern the universe say that they must!!
Yes, they are programmed to fill any space that they find with noise, a break between songs is often mistaken for space that needs filling re: the 6 weeks, yes we can nail a song with homework and one run through, but often this then takes a few gigs and more rehearsals to really become great, others get worse with time I guess also
8. Someone managed to knock by bass once and snap the head of a tuner once way back, so i had to tune it with pliers, other than that no real issues Id be more worried now about my hi tec circuit board head going wrong than my basses, regards how new it is
9. I am not up on effects sounds, please can someone say how much of this bassline sound is created by the electric bass and with what effects ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yp6fhJ8JqZw Or is there other synth going on, cant imagine Mr S wanting to play under to much stuff
10.
Haha great comment and very true........ if you love music the only way to get married is to marry a musician.......... or a least someone who is really into music or the arts, mere humans do not understand where you come from our how you think......
Not always true When I met my now wife (15 yrs ago) I was playing in 3 bands out doing evening gigs, and saturday weddings, and her interests where completely different and still are I stopped playing for a number of years when our kids where young, this was not enforced and she supported my other interests during that time (playing footy and doing martial arts) Back into playing for a few years now and with her full support I have supported her in her interests also, we just have to make sure the diaries work with kids stuff and have some time together also, its all good Did not play to marry or not marry a musician, in fact the girl I dated before (great friend) was a singer, but we could never have made a marriage work
11.
The Jungle Book! probably the film of my childhood. Some absolutely brilliant tunes on there. Second to Blues Brothers, but we all know that already
Can I have another? Already stated 2nd to the blues brothers is Jackie Brown for me Im also a big fan of the Legend album by Clannad, used on the 80s Tv show Robin of Sherwood, ok its not a film, but better than the one Costner did with Bryan Adams
12. In one band I play with we have started to specify version Often whoever chooses the song (its a very democratic band) may prefer the structure from a live version (some great ones on you tube) or parts which are not part of the radio version So a specific version or structure sheet is needed to save time at run through and can be emailed Example Recently we did Blondie, Atomic The versions on the original greatest hits has much less vocals than later edited versions and large instrumental and small breakdown/bass part We combined the 2, to keep the breakdown, but increase the singing Email is great and you can agree loads before spending money on rehearsal room time
13. If he is just a average guy who made a mistake and did not set his reserve etc to suit his heart then Id just let it go, with perhaps some forgivingly worded bad feedback to help him and others If he is anything other than sincere, then full on bad feedback and anything else you can do to discredit his profile and name to protect others Obviously it may not be easy to determine what he is, but you may know Going legal will most likely cost you more headache, money and time than paying a slightly higher price to the next one you see Shame is if he did make a sincere mistake, then he should at least have the guts to state that and apologize to you, id call him and and least explain that to him
14.
My issue would be keeping the instrument in a safe, secure and appropriate place. Temperature, humidity, risk of fire or theft; all of this would seriously concern me if I had potentially 1000s of pounds locked into one item.
Same concerns applies to funds
15. Apart from perhaps interviews and advertisement, surely the views and links on here make this site No 1
16. blues brothers has gone, so without thinking to much, Jackie Brown
17.
Is this the same drummer you wrote about that had no stamina?
Better not look at what he is writing about you on the drummers forum then
18. Well it saves 2 trips to the car park each gig
19. I usually enjoy most of DK Marlows vids and lessons, but with respect, I think he's gone a little mad here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLwrLaKgIwo&feature=sub am I missing something?
20.
60s Fender...with all the trimmings (case and documents). Hide it away and play it on Sundays Mind you, personally despite the fact I have yearned for a 60s Fender for years, Id never pay the asking price purely because im so fussy and id never find one im happy with!
Id love to own a fender from my year of birth (69), what would that cost me ?
21. From a bass players point of view Sit Down Its more boring to play than sweet home alabama, the drummer even offered to swap instruments for it But it does get the crowd going, so I just get into it and feel it would be selfish to drop it, I've songs I love in also To be fair to the band, if I said please no, they would drop it
22.
Where did that come from? Who says you have to be prepared for 'all conceivable musical situations'?
I think someone stated that earlier as a reason to know how to read
23.
The BIG issue I have with tab is when people write out incorrect tabs (either they're new to ear learning, or they just rushed through the tab without listening to the song properly because they wanted some UG brownie points )
I never assume any TAB is correct, it saves me a few minutes as a starter sometimes, but you always have to fill in the details by ear and rewind As a non reader, am I to assume that every "proper" piece of music I could google or find in a book has an exactly correct bass part, including every slight variation Im kinda hoping you answer yes to that
24.
Gentlemen, I think this thread has got a little out of control. I never intended it to become a slanging match between those that think reading is good and those that don't.
I don't think anyone on here thinks reading is "not good", just not essential for certain forms of playing Cant wait for your next question Enjoy playing, I have met very few players who are happy with their current ability, reader or not
