Hey all. First time poster .. so if this is in the wrong place, please shout at me (quietly!) I am after a tab for Michael Jackon's 'Rock With You' for 4 string bass. I need it for a wedding gig next weekend and the only assitance I can find on line is from 5 stringers ... Any help would be greatly appreciated. James (not Jamerson!)
I agree tab is not great, but if you dont have the time or the ear to learn it from the record, it can save a little time So assuming the 5 string instruction you have is anywhere near correct, then at least it gives you the notes on the string you don't have and could rearrange them to suit your bass Hope that makes sense

google the song name and add the words bass tab you will have to make your own judgement if its anywhere near good or not and there is alot of rubbish put up on sites Yes learn the basics, but the real fun is trying to play some riffs and stuff which you really love

A teenage band I support just did there first gig, rage against the machine, some ACDC, that sort of thing It was truly really good, if you closed your eyes, you would have not known how young they where Yes, they have been fully supported with the use of a rehearsal room each week and borrowing plenty of gear Point is, no reading music, just MP3s and hours in front of YouTube at the weekends by all the lads Now the issue is, do we encourage them as they are, because they really have something as a unit? Or Tell them, well thats great, but really you should forget metal and whats cool in your pier group and go an learn real music theory (which is not cool to them) Either way, we could be right or wrong in the future
Feck this is getting complicated!! But can answer in the affirmative for most of this. I can play along to stuff I listen to after getting the gist from tab. Surely it would be the same playing in a band. Once we have decided what we are gong to play, that's what rehearsals are for, right?
yep, rehearsals for covers at least, if you know the lines, its about starts and endings also the list silddx wrote is good
God, I've been playing for 30 years and other than the first five frets on the E and A strings, I have to work out what the notes are called. But I can improvise over stuff reasonably well and after a good while your fingers kind of develop eyes, as Steve Vai once said. You know what the notes are going to sound like before you hit them. I can usually sing a melody in my head and more or less play it straight away. I made a nice spice rack last year with my carpentry skills
My knowing where what the frets are came from years of jamming, not study, but they have now found their way into my memory, so what i was trying to say is if the OP is going to study and not just let it happen, like us, then he may as well learn it all I think we are all saying the same thing, obviously the answer is NO to the original question There are extremes, someone who can play amazingly and follow without delay something they hear and without any theory at all, and those who can read anything real time, but could not play a note without a sheet, or improvise at all (Ive played with a lot of keyboard players like this) BTW, I am a carpenter by trade
Ok, thanks everyone for your input, some great advice there. The general consencus seems to be that it's not essetial to be able to read to be in a band, but it wouldn't do any harm. For me though I probably won't learn to read as I won't ever be playing in a pro band, but I will try to learn the notes on the fretboard so that I can at least noodle around in the correct key. Using my ears came up a few times and I think that is the most important piece of advice. I must get away from relying on tab and just try to play something that comes from me. Thanks again guys
Forgive me, but due to the need to ask the original question and your statement about learning the fretboard, you are in a very fundamental position, perhaps a perfect starting point to learn "properly" reading an all Im trying to say that if you are going to have to learn the notes etc anyway, why not combine it with reading I think there are alot of guys on here like me, who have learned much as we have gone (like knowing where every note is throughout the fretboard) etc. but not learned to read, and given our time again would have combined it all
I think this is getting a bit OT and was answered in the first post, The question was "do you need to read to be in a band?" The answer is no
True, but for me half the fun is talking b******s Its worth noting that reading is a tool and apart from its ability to allow a musician to understand and play something instantly they have not heard before, nothing else it does cannot be achieved by other means, even if those other means are more long winded, which often they are As a non reader, if there is anything else I don't realize in that comment id be keen to know Its a tool I wish i had
What does that tell you? If i'd have learned theory as well as technique, i'd be much better off financially and a lot more suntanned.
maybe, but don't let the ifs and buts eat you
There's a lot of rudeness on here about guitarists isn't there.
come on, some of its justified i do agree about ears though, play along
Has worked for me, and in my situation, being able to read music offers no benefit at all!
Im a non reader also and I learn from using the rewind button alot, tab can point in the right direction to save time, but never covers all the fills and exciting bits We can get by without reading, but I don't think id go so far as to say there would be no benefit at all
-
If there was an answer to this question , it would after 60 years be hard to buy new one or the other due to lack of demand And one type would be cheaper 2nd hand But both the P and J remain fairly equal in dollars
-
No you don't need to read music to play in a band, You need to understand what you are supposed to play and then do that to a standard that pleases your band members and audience There are 1000s of good non reader musicians providing great entertainment in pubs, clubs, functions etc, every week There are also some very rich musicians who cant read I am not saying though that I am happy I cant read, I wish Id learnt or had the time now to devote to it I also wish I could do 8 step overs then place the ball in the corner of the net, but it does not stop me enjoying playing football As someone else said, there will be a set way each band communicates within, you'll need to handle that, whatever the method is
Howdy, A hypathetical question. If your wife(a non musician) gave you an ultimatum. Stop doing your gigs or we will have to part company. what would your answer be? bear in mind you live a very comfortable life with a good lookin girl(who you love dearly) who is also very pleasant and who has enough of her own money as not to drain your resources. any (hypathetical) advice? Would love to hear it also bear in mind "you weren't a musician when I met you" was the conversation starter "but Ive just got better" was the reply
If my wife asked this, then she would not be the same person I know now anyway, so Id guess things would have gone wrong already due to her change of character I am as someone said earlier a "hobby player" but both of us know the importance of hobbies, sports and being social, and encourage it in our kids Its is up to me to manage how much it impacts on other stuff, if a week gets intense with a gig etc at a bad time, I make sure I compensate the following week with more family stuff I did give up something when we married and promised to not encourage our kids to do it, but she has never asked me to give in any other area in 13 years, and that was a 2 wheel dangerous thing, so I can understand and don't really miss it I be a real grump if I couldn't play music and footy anyhow Sorry if that bored you all, but it just made me feel grateful (for me wife and bass:) )

Nice one, you've already comments on the tube asking what the music is I assume we can now blame you for the inaccurate forecasts as you now endorse the BBC weather team
Macca is indelibly associated with just two basses, the Hofner and the Rickenbacker, both unique, both easily identified, both utterly iconic. If either of them were put up for auction by Macca, you'd be attracting people like Bill Gates, Roman Abramovich, Sheikh Makhtoub, the Sultan of Brunei. The auction would become a big swinging dick contest, and the bass would sell for well over £1m. Just to make a point. I'm richer than they are.
Id gamble this is not far from the truth, and Abramovich would tell his manager to play it on the wing or else I may have missed something, but have we established yet, if he does indeed play the real bass, or copies If copies, where is it, under Sir Pauls bed?
-
I wonder what his reasons for using it last night where, Id have love to see him playing the Ric as he was doing the wings stuff Re: cutting through, there was a ton of rack stuff there, was he running his bass though anything, surely that stuff was not all vocals?

If your in a band where you have 2 guitar players who are not competing too much and both are more interested in supporting the sound, then you are lucky and have something special

I saw an RS212 in the flesh for the first time. My God, it's huge. Err.. that's it. As you were.
But they are very portable, the handle are set in both sides near the front so you can lift it safely then walk through a doorway without risk of scuffing your knuckles Im more than pleased with mine in all areas

Ive always thought the bass playing in that live version just hits the spot I do like the look of the bass in that video also, it looks like it could also be used to fend of aliens
