1. Is there a band politics section ? I think it would be good to have one, ok there would be plenty of venting, but it might help to odd person go and do some good within their group finding solutions Where there is more than one person involved with anything, politics come in, all being open and aware of each other desires and expectations is important, but far easier said than done
  2. "Fridrik karlsson" is a guitarist who plays a part in live X factor shows This is the guy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0sZCNTDD0E I stated this to assist the original poster, they do have live music, but I don't know how often or what door he went through to get the gig As a said, he just plays in our church sometimes as I do (although clearly I am not a real musician like he is:))
  3.
It's all the same guys on rotation at the BBC, put together by the same people and it's incredibly competitive to get into. Don't know about ITV but X-Factor don't have a band (although a friend of mine mimed playing a guitar once and got paid for doing so).
One of the guys who plays guitar at our church sometimes played in some Xfactor shows so they must have a live band sometimes?
  4.
Here we go: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/sep/1...ok-twitter-rant
Cheers, I like the way they call it a supergroup
  5.
i've heard some bands that do the multi-bass thing quite well (rothko for example), but as for the all-star 'bass covention'-style jams i've seen posted here... they just don't do it for me.
Mate, I just tubed Rothko http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3v9a0lO4MwU I quite like it The drummer and the bass player on the right look like 2 guys I saw play in a bar at Broadstairs folk week this summer, its really bugging me now
  6.
I don't know if anything ever came of it, but weren't Mani, Andy Rouke and Peter Hook working on some sort of bass only project?
Any links to that, even if it were was bad, id love it hear and see a bit
  7.
Has no one mentioned this yet?
Yeah, well remembered, this and bad news always put things into perspective
  8.
we were talking about good bands tho
I was adding them to the 2 bass root note and peter hook line bands, that lozz referred to
  9.
Yep, aside from a band I saw, and was on the same bill as many years ago, bands with more than one bass aren`t really for me. The band I mention was Spit Like Paint - two bassists, one doing the traditional root notes, the other playing more Peter Hook type melodies. I suppose the reason it worked was cos they didn`t have a guitarist or keys, so there wasn`t oo much going on. Def a one-off tho, in my view.
Indie version of the style you mention ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xr1i0_oeZYw...feature=related And there still going
  10. My opinion is that the bass is the most amazing instrument in any setting, be it a traditional pop/rock type band, Jazz band or an orchestra/stage show etc. The bass ultimately controls the mood and style that gets heard But I am no fan of the bass outside this setting, I think guys from Mark King to the Wootens of this world are gifted beyond belief, but once they step over the line of being a support instrument to a bigger picture I loose interest, despite my love of bass I don't mind a small bass solo, or a fill, or even the likes of Dave Holland going off on one for a while, but to long without some other instrument as well and its not for me So a can look Jaw dropped at Stanley and Miller etc showing us their stuff, perhaps the same way I can at someone who does 1000 keep ups with a football, but Id rather see 3 touches in a team game Sorry if this is off topic slightly

spot on He stood out back then, and nothing like this is timeless
  12.
If the Chillis do sue her, it'll make them look like idiots IMO. They are a massive multi million selling band, she is a nobody wanting her 5 minutes of fame. What benefit will suing her give? They dont need the money and her song is hardly going to affect them is it?. Yes 2 lines sound a bit similar, but so what, the rest of the song is completely different. Whether she wrote it or not, who cares..Let her get on with it. In 10 years she'll be back in Mcdonalds like the rest of the Xfactor "stars" and everyone will have forgotten her anyway.
Debates in the media can suit the injured party, it gets a group of people (the drossy pop lovers) to the attention that there are bands like the chillis who their idols draw from It would make them look like twats to sue, but if they get short of cash its an option Diana Vickers has found a way to make some money, assuming she is benefiting as well as the machines behind her, well we all want to pay our mortgage off
  13. Did you buy the LPB MIM on here? I have the same bass, love the color (as i do 3TS) but more importantly, i really love the tone of this MIM
  14. We play this, to be honest, its the only part of the song I've not made sure im not playing note for note, but if you get the feel right and walk within the right chords it fits and you can alternate it a little each time round This works for our band
  15.
and more morally acceptable than putting on a wig and pretending to be Chris Squire?
I think calling it a morale issue is a bit OTT Its one of those things, some think is fun and cool, and others will cringe at, we all have those thoughts about various things Personally I like the idea of tributes, be it half attempts in pubs or a full blown detailed professional project
  16.
When a bass tutor says beginners to advanced welcome what do they mean by advanced? after doing a bit of research on some local tutors web sites the standard of playing and seems no better then many of the people on bass chat. I expected to be wowed and inspired. not a word about any pro work
If I were looking for tuition, lack of reading skills surely would put me in the beginners camp, regardless of the fact I've been gigging off and on for 25 years maybe this wording in an ad is more to not have any potential student rule you out as a teacher they would try, rather than a statement that has universal definition
  17. '3V17C' thats alot of the stuff ive been playing with a rock band over the last few years, Ive quit due to excessive guitars, but as their mates have agreed to stay till they replace me Bilbo I've just youtubed some of those, you learn something everyday eh.
  18. I could reply to this everyday with a different name (dont worry i wont) Someone already said Stax, Yep, Booker T & the MGs, some of the best lines and you get to be in the Blues brothers
  19. sorry nothing to add, cept i enjoyed the Purple Helmets also, no nonsense covers with JJ on bass I got nice n sleazy in the set of 2 bands i played with last year, but both dropped it after a few gigs, seems not as well known as I thought it was Was fun to play a few times though
  20. 21. Urine has been used to achieve many things throughout the ages, its proberly one of our most wasted assets in this recycle era I've never intentionally done this, can't wait for the 1st Basschat to post the results
  22.
especially when the guitarist does any solos.
Surely that never happens
  23. The covers thread has me realize that Id love to do originals again, I have the offer, but the style is not really what I want to be doing and time is precious So wondering what would be your ideal originals band if you could form one based on your own unique take on it, or indeed are you lucky enough to be doing just that? One of mine would be something along the lines of CSN funked up a little, and with some brass, and perhaps some female vocals in there Its highly unlikely though that anyone else in the world would be into it, so I'll have to stick to my covers bands http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVW9sOsXAjU (bass at around 4:00) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQAWqT_R5NI
  24. he has certainly put some time in, seems more of a lead guitar type guy though,
  25.
What never fails to surprise me is the collossal scope for things to not work 'quite right' in band situations. We've all done the loud guitarist to death, buried him and dug him up once more to have another go at him for being TOO BLOODY LOUD. Then there's the drummers that are too loud, or speed up, or slow down through songs. Last night threw up what's becoming a more commen occurance recently. It's the piano player's left hand
Yes, it appears that everyone apart us bass players wants to mess up the sound and the timing, their lucky they have got us The left hand can be an issue, our guy is used to solo piano gigs in restaurants so to be fair, its hard to then come off the left hand What gets me more though, is when a keyboard sound is being used, and its not been selected correctly and ends up being cabaret rather than cool sounding
