Allegedly, wooten is far better than the guy from oasis/blink 182 or BUT Who earns more money? lets say per annum the man with the ability to play any style, perform unaccompanied and still sound great, conversent in all styles, solo upon request, play 16th notes with ease,, slap, tap, thump etc, etc, etc has solo albums that the majority of people have never heared of, plays for a group that the majority of people have never heared of, but is regarded among his peers as "the greatest" or A root note player, who has a good image, an endorsement, who plays around the world in a very succesfull band Who is financially better off?
If Andy Bell is still playing with oasis, then he is a far better musician than a root note player, check his guitar and vocal contribution to RIDE in the early 90s I believe he was also involved in the writing process for oasis, but I never kept up with them to be sure of the details But I get the idea, Wooten and the like are not your normal band member Id guess there are many root note bass players who have done very well being part of popular bands, if they had a good deal on paper Don't know what the answer is but Im keen to know now

Mate, you have to put a clip up for us if you get on

We play this in Eb, and with varying setups, its more about the feel of the song, than trying to nail the exact sounds
Got a DVD yesterday from a friend with this on...Ok MJ is not for everyone but this blew me away...this is the first time he did this song live... incredible talent...ive heard he was a great bassist too...i cant imagine how good his groove was...astounding im sure...makes my spine tingle everytime i watch it.. check out the moonwalk at 3.37... his on his game here.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6JtuhsbEtw
Like most old gits, I lost interest after off the wall (perhaps thriller), but there is no debate as to his talent, like the hendrix of voice and dance, regardless of your opinion on whats cool or not My Son has become a massive fan, this had lead to him wanting to play drums and then taking in the Jackson 5, which leads to motown etc, and the Rod Temperton connection to Heatwave etc, so its all good

Thanks guys will check them out later Not sure what I do with it if the repair cost is almost what is worth
You are wrong, but not for the reasons you think. When I gig with a function band and play something that involves straight root note quavers and its locked in, I get a little buzz, the same as everyone else. But I have been doing this for 30+ years and that little buzz is not enough and hasn't been for a long, long time. Its better than nothing but its like watching the same movie 1,000 times. Even if you like the story, knowing the outcome limits the pleasure gleaned. Its like those old records that you used to love. You still love them but familiarity breeds its own ambivalence and you like to listen to them less and less frequently. I find most covers, particularly the usual crowd pleasers, are in that area; uninspiring through overuse. When you find yourself doing something fresh, inventive, provocative and intense, the buzz is that much greater.
Sorry, think I get you now I really do hope you find some joy in something that comes your way soon It seems your working and not playing with music, I sometimes naively assume that semi pros and pros always do both, but I guess thats not always the case I guess its like me not wanting to play mustang sally, but amplified greatly in your case to cover alot more music

Sorry but not sure where to post this Basically, I have an old wurlitzer keyboard, which has seen better days, I need someone to look at quote for/fixing it, I am in surrey, any help thankfully received Its not been used since the mid 90s when my originals band ended , I did try to get it fixed up about 7 years ago, but all the shops I went to said no to fixing it, but offered to buy it All the sites I find seem to be USA based
Words? I write instrumental music that never gets performed. The music I play live is generally the same sh*te everyone else does! So its Lerner and Loewe, Jerome Kern, Hoagy Carmichael, George Gershwin, Sammy Cahn, Stevie Wonder.......
I hope you find an outlet for your own music Bilbo - Sorry cant answer, I only play covers now
-
Yes, it does
Your not the guy who finds himself at a function where there is a band, who sits in the corner and refuses to enjoy it for what it is ? (usually cheese) Mate I wish I had your talent and knowledge of music (what I assume you have by what you do), but i cant help feeling that with it, you lose something also No offense meant and I could be and most likely am very wrong

In all my time being in and around bands (both covers and originals), in all the conversations and banter i've had, until now, I have never experienced anyone looking down on covers bands Its part of our culture, be it dancing to cheesy disco at weddings, rock classics where punters know every word and note of the solo in pubs, tribute bands for nostalgia, Jazz standards To say its pointless is snobbery, next thread will be telling us what we should wear when we play I love hearing originals, but music does not become obsolete when the original artist has stopped gigging or is to massive to see play live in the local bar
Its not enough for me. That's why I stopped reading Janet and John books The obsession by working musicians for the value of covers is a justification that allows them to feel ok about the music they play
I think that is slightly harsh, but I am pleased for you that you have the time, skill and means to follow a path more complicated than playing covers, Im also glad for myself that I have the chance to come and see acts like yourself that are not doing the norm, its all got its place Last saturday, we got a pub jumping around to all kinds of covers, young and old dancing together It maybe a bit janet and john to you, but I feel it unfair to brand it babyish, what you do is more challenging and complicated yes, but a well executed fun covers bash should not be belittled I said its fun and its easy, meaning it can be achieved by busy guys, who have little time away from the shop floor and family to commit to music, but that does not mean we would not want to write and rehearsal originals, we do, but being realistic, covers is the only way I am going to achieve playing party atmosphere gig this christmas, so I am happy to go with it Sultans of swing eh
I don't know how The Watersons, Yo Yo Ma, Nouvelle Vague and The Beatles ever live with themselves for playing other peoples' music. Gotta say, the OP does come across as a bit of a twonk (probably unintentionally)
Im convinced the Beatles (and stones etc) would not ever regret their starting point, UK bands covering those USA tunes, it was the springboard for what come and is still coming after No originals band has ever been successful without first learning and being inspired by music made by others - The OP sees covers as "a pointless exorcise" so I assume, that means he could derive no fun from it, so fair enough don't do it, but for alot of us, thats the point, its fun and fairly easy fun

2 covers bands though I have given notice to one (to heavy for me) and will look for another
Good man. Although in one of my bands, I am the only member who can't read music, which means I get left to create all the bass lines because she can't tell me what to do LOL!
Ha, Ive been playing bass at some contemporary christian services (aimed at people half my age ) and im the only one who cant read the notes, only the chords So yes, I get to make my own fills and licks, strangely though I am starting to see pattens and anticipate things from the music I do still feel like a lemon though, wish id learn to read
-
After an assessment from jake a while back, although I cant read a note, left me with the feeling that technique wise, id not done bad as a self taught player, mainly from books (Jake correct me if I wrong ) Do I wish Id had the chance to take lessons when I was young and learn technique properly along with reading skills, yes of course, but it was not possible in my circumstance But this does not stop me and the people who dance at our gigs having fun, and thats my simple goal based on what I have to hand Same as not being perfect technique football player does not stop me, my teammates and our opponents having some fantastic days out doing that Technique is important, but I know that there are martial artists out there with great technical technique, who would come a cropper in a street fight against a strong, determined street fighting headcase I wish I had more technique in many things, but if I wait for it, i will miss out in life big time

i'm lucky to be playing a far bit of 80s now in a covers band back then there was real camps of what was cool or not in different circles and fashion groups the great thing now is that its all well received as nostalgia to the 40ish year old and some good times are being had
So many of you play in covers bands, in fact it seems to me that all of you do!!! What is the appeal of playing in a covers band? I've never understood it. I've always played in a band that writes and performs its own material - very very very rarely have we ever thrown a cover into our set and I always felt it was a pointless exercise. Does anyone here, apart from me, play in a band that writes its own material?
For me at 41 the reasons are 1. I love fun gigs, so simply choose the songs, learn at home, minimal rehearsal time (ive little spare time) then enjoy playing out well thats it
Nice one mate, gigging is my favourite bit about being in a band, and it should be a fun experience! Just don't end up like the ex bass player lol, where will you be gigging?
thought it was a thread on the chuck mangione song Good stuff, I came out of retirement a few years back, it does feel good, also learning covers is so much easier now with you tube, i tunes and the odd tab search to point the way if needed (yes I know before one of you readers slaps my hands) Hope you enjoy the return as much as I have

Im used to busking and going off structure, but normally know my stuff well enough Also not expecting to understand any leading at this one as we are all pretty much in the same boat Just wondered if anyone had any neat tricks for prompts other than lyrics
-
Cheat Sheets I've 35 songs to play at my schools parent night fund raiser, its all classic pop and rock that I've heard 1000 times on the radio I have no problem remembering chord progressions, licks, fills and the like for each song, but its the structures im gonna have trouble committing to memory I wont need chord sheets, but feel i need to be able to glance at the lyrics to be confident where I am in some of the songs So just wondering how do you guys approach a gig, where you may not have everything stored deep enough in your mind
From a music point of view I'd love to have been involved in Stephen Stills Manassas
+1 to anything stills fronted(well at least most), or a mid to late 70s CSN (not with Y) tour, not massive bass parts, but ones that really work From the 90s, the new fast automatic daffodils or ride (edit late 80s early 90s, im gettin old:) -
I recently left my old band (quite amicably) and the new bassist is struggling to pick up some of the bass lines. My old guitarist has asked me if I could put up a couple of videos and sort out some tab for the guy so he knows how to play the songs which I happily agreed to. I've made up the videos but the problem is I can't find an easy way of making the tab without having to go crazy typing numbers! I've googled it and there's some random things that sort of work (mostly with an extra 2 strings) but one of the tunes involves hitting the d string open while at the same time playing about on the g string for a section and I can't find one that lets me show playing 2 notes at the same time. Does anyone else make up tab and know of a nice easy way to do this without all the monotonous typing?
I assume they are not covers? If they are then cant he listen and google some tabs himself, most are in complete and slightly wrong, but they can point you in the right direction and save a bit of rewinding time It might be less time consuming to spend a few hours with him, than trying to create tabs?
