Played my fairly new Jap Jazz bass out through my TC rig at a recent practice, it sounded amazing doing covers like "won't get fooled again" and other rocky stuff, where cutting through 2 noisy buggers with 6 strings is needed, this is a massive contrast to the motownyish sound I've been pushing for through it recently on other projects with my Pbass, in my humble opinion this amp can do so much, it still feels like a new toy Only draw back is it only has 3 presets! So many great settings to save + i'll also join in, im near esher in surrey if anyone wants to check a tc rig out:)

If you care about tone and power, buy an all valve Ampeg head, it's the dogs bra![/quote] TC electronic RH450 is a good trade off for valve/old school tone, obviously its not the real thing, but its not heavy either, good enough for my level of playing (and used by ex ampeg pros, if you believe the endorsements) Also just noticed you compared a ABM, i use one sometimes (not my choice) and like it no more than the mag stuff, but if it where an ampeg set up for me, Id be smiling
  5. what you can buy for 200-300 these days new is amazing, many squires are well rated, I owned a VMJazz which for the money was great So new you can get something great for that money, 2nd hand perhaps a MIM fender, it may be no better than some squires, but you may like a fender logo What style do you think you would like? And yes top comment, bass is a good choice, great instrument, midfield of the band, you'll get no credit though, unlike the guy who does'nt know his chords but plays a few random notes and calls it a lead solo

    I could have only one, but I wont, they will however be the first things we sell if we ever hit hard times and can't buy food! In the meantime, I would not rule out myself adding a few more to the collection I like having my thud on flats P bass, and some brighter options as I do a wide ride of cover styles and have different bass moods

  8. returned to playing at around 40 and thought I could carry on as before, made the mistake of buying over heavy (which used to be std) gear Brought a mark bass head (fantastic, at least through old school cabs, with a few drawbacks which may be only issues for me) and experimented by with some light weight cabs Light cabs to me seemed to lack punch and presence, and did nothing for me (never tried a barefaced mind!) Anyway, earlier this year I finally settled on a TC rig, the cabs are slightly heavy than there lightweight alternative, but they are manageable and do what the old school heavy ones do for me

[/quote] I did some of this research during the months before I brought my 4003 last year, I did find it very hard to get more than vague info on specs, anyway there seemed to be a pretty strong suggestion that 4001 older models where hit and miss as to neck issues etc, and as I could not run all over the country to check out the few that come up for sale 2nd hand, I waited for a newer model to come up locally, fortunately for me someone on here sold a fairly new 4003 in the finish i wanted, and they lived only 1/2 hour from me. Its a top quality instrument in every respect, but I may pass it on soon due to coming to the conclusion I am a fender guy first Not sure thats much help, but good luck

With an RH450 and my P bass, I am trying to get closer to the jamerson/babbitt style sound for some live playing Learning to play is a endless quest, but I wish to focus on the equipment tweaks also So I have flats on a P bass, and wonder if I should purchase a string mute, or buy some sponge! Basically Id love any advise re equipment (or playing) that will help my quest, thanks I have also posted for help in the amp section re amp settings

After owning my RH450 and RS212 for a while, and being very happy with it, I am ready to add another cab The RS210 is the obvious choice, and I see they do a 210 combo which basically as far as I can tell is just a slightly taller cab housing with a slot in which you can fix any TC head into and leave wired as a combo Buying one without a head installed is a RS210C I like this idea, keeping the head protected and having the advantage of transport combo style, but with the option of removing the head and using it with the 212 on its own still if I wish But the cab with the combo slot is £150 more than the 210 basic cab, but its only a slot! Does anyone know if these can be brought nearer to the cab without slot price from anywhere?
  13. I gigged a bass through a fender valve guitar amp in a pub band years back, it sounded great and never played up on me, you could even pick up the radio on it! Not sure if science wise it was a good idea, but it worked fine

Its all relative as they say.........[/quote] This is true, very subjective, but also you can have expensive basses (or things) and not be a snob, or have very little money and be one A snob to me is an attitude towards others and not related to what you personally own or have achieved I see this all the time in my line of work

I've heard other folks have similar experiences.[/quote] Its telling he assumed you needed to save to buy a fender, perhaps you could afford to buy 1000 fenders but don't want one Seeing others play id only comment on their gear if I was interested in what/how/why from there perspective, you don't go to see a band to tell them what to own/play or wear, there really are some knobs out there

  20. some interesting posts trying to define snob I love having fenders, could play a squire, but don't (have done) However I think i would only be a "snob" if I judged others by what gear they have, which I don't The singer in one band I play with plays copy guitars and after a gig once, someone made a comment about it along with something about his footwear, this guy was a snob / fashion victim or whatever, Id rather play and be friends with people who where themselves, than a tosser who is going to judge someone by their clothes or make of gear Also I never played an instrument that cost more than I could afford at various stages of my life, Id hate to think of young non professional players buying instruments that cost more than they can afford, just because they feel they maybe judged on the make

That's a much more "normal" design with a standard bridge, no pickup cover etc. But Ric sell far fewer of them![/quote] Yes, the 4004 is not classic Ric, and so is competing for buyers from a standing start so to speak, unlike the 4003, which you will a buyer will consider with the image of the bass already sold Unless you dislike the tones that a 4003 puts out, then you would have to be a very special player to argue that its limitations limit you, it can do a lot I have left the pick up cover on, it did bug me to start with (as did the one that came on my jazz) but ive got used to it being there now

I was fortunate to pick up my mapleglo 2009 as new off this forum, with the original owner (a member of this forum with some very nice basses) playing a few and picking it out at the shop as the best of the batch they got in, he then found his dream chris squire ric and sold his new purchase to me to fund it. It as someone else said, was my boyhood dream bass, and really is utterly fantastic and totally unlike anything else sound and tone wise It is however something I only take when it is not a squeeze the band into a small space gig, as I don't want to sword fight the neck with another guitar or mic stand But I do love it when I take it, but being unlike anything ive ever owned (mainly fender/MM style) took some getting used to, i was not sure at first, but am sold on it now! I have to say now though, that its only draw back is that I like to rest my forearm on the body for finger style, and its not chamfered like a fender is, but you get used to it Apart from that, its fantastic Having said that I am really craving another MM, so may pass this on to fund that crave if it continues, mainly because although I love it, I will rarely gig it as its mint

[quote name='molan' post='899359' date='Jul 19 2010, 08:23 PM']Totally agree about the gigging stuff - I gigged with my RH450 head & really didn't like the on-stage sound at all but the sound engineer said it sounded great out front (I wasn't in the PA).[/quote] Twice now I have heard my TC rig used before our band, I've stood at various place around the hall, and it does seem to have a amazing presence further away than you get when up close to it Not sure if its the cab or the head, but it sounds so good, unfortunately you don't the same feel standing on top of it, something I did get from my orange cab This is based on a 212 on its own and a little in the PA in small halls (120-150 people), I do plan to add the 210 which when closer to the ear may give a better on stage sound, but to be honest its out front sound is so good as is, I am not in any rush

I dont need my Ric, however, if you buy the right MM (or fender or Ric) then you are not wasting money, merely turning cash into an asset you could re sell to regain your costs Obviously depending on price and how you treat it, markets etc, you may lose a little, but its not wasted money if you can afford to invest in a decent bass and take a little risk on the investment I am not advising you to buy anything though:) BTW, chills tribute, sounds great for a bass player!

I actually have more guitars than basses: Gibson ES175, Takamine nylon and Adamas steel string but I don't have GAS for gear anymore. I have MAS (musicality acquisition syndrome )[/quote] very true, but i think the majority of people like myself who play around with gear, do have a realistic view about there playing ability and what gear can do for it I have said recently in a post, I could get by on a cheap bass, but at 41 i've worked hard and want a nice one, even if it is more toy than need, just glad I don't like sports cars or golf, think that costs more?
