1. I stated before Im getting on with .88s But just to mention I sometimes play parts with the nail of my first finger, like pick style without a pick I tried it after learning Bernard Edwards did it, it really works, and can allow varying parts of songs to be fingered/picked, great fun anyway, find this easier to control than a real pick
  2.
Agree with the others, anything YOU feel sounds good and plays well will do. I guess a Fender would be playing it safe if you are trying to sound authentic but with so many different basses used on the originals its pointless trying to get it spot on IMHO. I might add that maybe a 5 string will help if your changing the keys for some songs but i dont think its necessary.
Thanks for the replies Fortunately the singer sticks to original keys so I am hoping to get away without having to go 5 string this time round I am a fender guy at heart, but its nice to see what you guys consider versatile enough to to this range of stuff
  3.
I've been playing with my fingers but some fast riffs i find hard to play with fingers. Recently i tried playing with a medium thickness plectrum but it snapped are the stubby ones any good? Any others you want to reccomend? Thanks, Chris
I have been a mainly finger style playing but recently have started to use a pick more and more, mainly due to me playing styles which I have not before in covers bands After trying a fair selection, I have settled on 0.88 dunlops, this may change, but as a fairly inexperienced pick player, these seem the most comfortable to date Will follow this thread with interest also ......
  4. What do you guys think the perfect bass is for a 5 piece pop style functions band, music from your nan's favorites, to disco through Kylie to modern x factor winner type pop acts?
  5. There must be massive set up issues Seems like one of those engineering projects that just had to be done regardless if it would become a real practical to use item in everyday use
  6. All true, there is also the stage of life issue When I was a teenager I played an old home made bass through an old PA speaker and amp strangely it produced a good 60s garage type sound, or so we thought at the time Now at 41 I am buying some expensive gear just to play pubs clubs and living rooms, not needed, but i've worked hard and wish to enjoy a few things I only dreamed of owning when I was younger Much like the keen weekend golfer who overspends on clubs Never spend what you have not got on anything you don't need, if you have a little spare, spend only some of it on things you don't need, and with the right basses (unlike sports cars), its a cash asset and not money wasted anyway Amps is a different matter!
  7. Original Question: Is a Squier better than a Fender? Some squiers may be better than some Fenders
If you have a Squier do you secretly wish it was a Fender?
I would guess most people do, the Fender badge is cool, but not everybody thinks that way
  8.
Every time I've picked up a Status S2 for a gig in the last twenty years. It's like marrying the exotic girl next door when you're twenty and never looking back
Are you speaking from experience ?

    ric o sound
I did experiment with it for a while but in my music it wasn't really useful. TBH there are easier ways of getting the same effect than having two cables running from your bass and doubling up on amps. Chris
Cheers, yeah i cant see it doing anything for me, just wondering if anyone does, maybe have a bit of fun messing with it one day perhaps

    ric o sound

OK, I am starting to get to grips with and enjoy my Ric, still struggling with the fact its got 1 more knob than anything ive owned before, and Ive never had a switch! So just wondering does anyone use the ric o sound, if so how and what does it do for you?
  11. I know nothing about this bass, but brought a budget Tanglewood bass in the 90s, it was an amazing bass for the price, through body strung, and really well made,
  12.
I know exactly what you mean, lojo... I'm playing my Road Worn Jazz - "Can I have a go on your bass, Mister?"............ "Yeah, sure!" I'm playing my AV 62 or one of the Status basses - "Can I have a go on your bass, Mister?"............ "What part of **** *** don't you understand?!"
Ha, yes, and its worse for the drummer!
  13. Just posted on the Ps are fantastic thread and it got me thinking Is anyone put off playing a bass they would love to gig because its in to good nick to risk I wont take my Ric out unless there is some separation between me and the punters and its not to crowded within the band space, which is a shame because id love to play it at pub gigs and parties, but its likely to get dinged Also I really want a 62RI P, but if I but a nice one id have the same issue Seems my MIM P is going to take all the stick Does anyone else have this issue?
  14. Cheers guys, food for thought I really want this bass, can afford it and would keep it forever ........... However, as you say, it would be to nice and pricey to take to many places Which is why at present I only play my perfect mapleglo Ric in the church, and gig my MIM P in front of the party booze drinkers
  15. The new price on these 62RIs is massive, but they sound like the biss Anyone know if the Jap ones compare, new they seem to be equal to an MIA std P?
  16.
Thanks lojo.
Well if your looking for a way to say thanks I've an idea!
  17. Yes, a 2nd hand recent squire would be a good buy I sold a newish VMJ for 160 last summer, so you must be able to pick up a std jazz for the price you have set
  18. someone buy this and put me out of my misery, absolutely lovely
  19.
Still got my year of birth P-Bass "that ain't going nowhere"
Now that sounds like a great idea, but in my case increasing expensive and hard to find Sometimes with gear "the chase is better than the catch", but not always
  20.
If you're in the market for a 3TS 62 RI, drop Simon (OldGit) a PM. He gets in Japan-only P basses for decent prices. I bought a gorgeous 3TS '62 from him last week, and can't tell the difference between it and the "real" US '62 RI I had last year. Well, apart from the price of course He might even have one for sale at the moment.... Cheers Tredders
Cheers for this
  21.
Okay, finally found one I like. Picked up a lovely American Vintage 62 RI in vintage white/tort yesterday and it's got a lovely wide open growling tone and not the usual horrid nasally sound most Precisions on rounds usually produce. Very very impressed, especially with the stunning build quality and the lovely flat but wide 44.5mm neck. Beautifully polished rosewood board as well. Pics in the porn section when I get round to it.
congrats, I really want a 3TS 62 (supposed it will have to be RI!) with flats, so nice to hear you where sold on one had you tried other 62RIs and not liked them as you state or was it other types of P, also was it new?
  22. Ive owned and gigged both My scientific answer is the RH450 is my ultimate amp, I use it for rock band, 80s pop band and church The markbass is a great bit of kit, but the tubetone/presets and tuner win it for me, and paired with my RS212 wow
  23.
I've sent a set of La Bella flatwounds to a member whom I forgot the name, they had been on and off the bass for one day as I didn't like flatwounds after all, so they were virtually new, I offered them in this forum for free to the first person that pm'd me and I did as promised, I've sent to Mr. anonimous the very next day, now more than 3 weeks ago. He must have got them by now but I never got so much of a thank you message neither in a pm or here. You know who you are. Next time I feel this generous I'll chuck them in the bin or give 'em to Oxfam. Rant off.
Thanks for offering, even though I was to late to get em, nice gesture mate
  24.
I finally got enough cash for a Precision bass. It's an MIM Standard, but I can truly say I LOVE this thing! I've had it for around six months now and I can hardly put it down.
I have the same bass MIM LPB / maple, and I agree it is so comfortable to play and not so expensive that i worry to much where I gig it
