  1. Seems to be a bit of thing going on in my circles over the last few years , everyone planning and playing at their own 50th , got me thinking what I'll do if I make it (3 years) So you planning to or played at yours ? What songs , did you do something as a one off away from your usual stuff ? Did you play all night and ignore your guests ? Of course this goes for any birthday or celebrated gathering
  2. Yep only thing that would work for range is a mobile phone type transmitter , but hen you'd have to pay a monthly subscription and the battery would last long
  3. Depending on my mood , The smiths , the stingrays or some northern soul (I know not really a band) , oddly I also quite liked the 2nd Witney album as I recall
  4. I play music at a low level but often get paid reasonably , and by most peoples definition they'd call me a musician for doing so. I play football at a low level, yet i'm not a footballer Personally I find the title "musician" a bit silly for someone like me, I can recreate basslines, and hold a band together timing wise, and I have great confidence playing certain genres well, but I don't think I should be called a musician unless I could read sheets and busk along at a much higher level than I currently and ever will do.
  5. Thanks all , I got sheets and have no issue working out the lines and timings etc. Its more about committing to memory something to me which runs like a script with no repeats rather than 2 lots of 16 bar sequences repeated in sections for example So really asking, any tips to make this progression simpler to remember as I cant see patterns and repeats (which is how I normally approach music) I know this sounds thick, I am untrained.
  6. Hi I've no reading or theory skills beyond basic chord charts , but I can play some jazz standards well enough to please the trained people I have played with (all be it low level fun) However most songs follow a pattern I can commit to memory (AAbA type stuff) I've been given a song "me and my shadow" , and whilst I can work out the feel and timing from the track , I cannot see any patterns and therefore I don't know how I am going to commit it to memory ? I might be trying to punch above my weight , but I how do you guys do this without relying on reading?
  7. Yep, if you work on them etc , fair play that's different than just flipping it onto another member straight away for more
  8. I believe if you buy on this site then re sell on this site you shouldn't look to profit (if you get a good deal but need to shift it on for whatever reason Then let another member have the same deal) But if you wish to sell elsewhere , then fair enough do as you wish
  9. I saw Martin Turners Wishbone Ash earlier this year (1mins walk from my house!) they where really good . First set new stuff , 2nd old stuff
  10. I'm looking at buying an older bass , and it got me wondering just how many hours playing is required to wear the frets enough for an owner to be forced to refret a bass ? When you see a refretted old bass , it must have a serious history of playing circuits or tours etc , or does a weekend warrior lifestyle cause that much wear ?
  11. I wouldn't be in a band with anyone who would miss for anything other than a short notice uncontrkable situation , which would be rare so I wouldn't be an issue to use the band kitty as always I do however know our guitarist has a policy in his other band whoever cancels pays , but I think they are more likely to Miss easily
  12. There's no fun on the forums without a bit of mischief . Could the goal of the recorded version to have been to sound like a slightly imperfect live take , which sometimes has more appeal than a perfectly produced studio song ? Anyway , my favourite heavy metal band is Mental as Anything
  13. Is it possible to be a well paid hobbyist ?
  14. We do this in our 80s tribute, its one of those that when you get it the rhythm really kicks, but it can also be not quite right easily if your not careful
  15. Funny enough I think the bass is one of the better things about the U2 sound , it's the singer that puts me off, there's a few lines that are completely recognisable by non muso types Also I've just booked to see Level 42 , only to read on here he can't play ? Why didn't you tell me earlier
  16. Nice one , look forward to reading this , wish us known before my holiday which just finished
  17. It's all good discussing the intellectual approach to technique and what's right and wrong, but the truth is the song in its recorded format was loved by millions, perhaps if it had been tidier it might not have been, who knows, some things you just can't explain. It's rather like pulling apart the technique and execution of a great sporting moment and saying it was an imperfect technique, regardless of the result.
  18. I thought the used market , for the non "classic" more standard modern gear is around 2/3rds of the new cost for items in good condition That has seemed to fit for my sales and purchases
  19. I think we would all love to know what model guitar/bass you have in you lab Cynicism aside, I'm sure we all wish you good luck with the business and well done for winning your pitch
  20. If you've not been gigging and need one then just do it , it will either inspire you or make you question youselves but both are good things Having said that , I'd only do it for free if you don't have to haul a pa
