1. In my business we call it "swings and roundabouts" but I'm still not sure which one is good or bad
2.
Great post.
+ 1
3.
My job in my band is to play the best bass lines that compliment the songs we play, sing background vocals and maintain a certain level of stage presence. I was not hired to critique or correct other members playing ability. As long as our calender is filled with good gigs I keep quiet. Blue
That could either mean you are quietly not enjoying the other players around you but biting your lip because the gigs mean more to you than the hassle of changing your situation , or that you are lucky and play in a band that you are very happy with the dynamics , both personality and musically The Op isn't enjoying is band and is wanting to do something about it
4. All depends on the genre and type of function We've been finishing with purple rain in our 80s set , it's fairly slow , but the singer is powerful and it gets everyone swaying , almost a group slow dance, but it works.
5. Bad ones 10 a penny , good ones not so much But he's a bad one
6. I doubt it's solvable , band dynamics like this rarely get better imo, your best trying to get out Sorry that's a bit negative, but I've wasted a few years trying to solve things like this
7. I remember Brookside & Bread where always on tv when I was younger , they never made one reference to the Beatles , at least that I remember . How unrealistic
8.
When it comes to U2, Mr Clayton is not the problem.
Great comment
9. For pop songs, sometimes minutes, but usually less than an hour to work out all the played parts. Then 2 years to remember the structures
10. Some for sale ads state , sold to "pb67" or you can see who's pm'd the seller I'd have passed your number on with the request
11. Im self employed and during very busy times, paying someone for a service thats easy to do yourself, is cost effective if it can free your mind. I sell a bass through a shop commission sale if the hassle time I expected would be more that the cost of the commission.
12.
It is anecodtal in the context of this discussion because no one is able to verify that what you say is entirely true... perhaps these individuals have inherited some property or wealth you are unaware of, for example? That said, as someone about to enter their 50s later this year, and who has spend about half their working life in the public sector, I certainly won't be retiring in the next 10 years and I doubt any of my public sector colleagues will either...
I have known these 2 guys for years, we have played football through to vets together, they have always spoken about their retirement date, and no circumstances have brought that forward or changed it. Like I said I think they where lucky at the time they signed up and to be fair they have always come across as if they know it.
13.
Anecdotal evidence is rarely a useful indicator of the true facts. For example, my dad retired in his 50s and worked in the shipping industry...
What I said was not Anecdotal, it was true, of the 2 people I mention at least I think they where lucky in their time, I doubt that package is on offer to school leavers now
14.
Indeed, yet this myth still persists. Neither have pay levels increased to those of the private sector by way of compensation...
I know 2 public sector workers who will retire very soon in their 50s with no change in lifestyle , only a serious pension pot will allow that. Im pleased for them , don't get me wrong.
15. The civil service for years seem to have a get a position, hide under your desk for 40 years then retire with a nice package thing going on, its not all bad that isn't on offer as much anymore
16. Im not going to talk you out of it, just say you can always buy another 2nd hand instrument when the time is right Only thing to be sure of is, its an asset right now, if you sell it, use the money on sensible things.
17. Total cost around £1200 ? If I was to spend that amount on LPs id like to choose my own list
18. How much is it after the first issue ?
19. Why do I need to give up gigging , I like it ? But only because the bands I play in have well structured rehearsals I couldn't be in a band where the players don't do enough homework and preparation
20.
I play in a prominent Northern Soul covers band
Jealous Love to see your set list (and the band sometime)
