I have a slow burner band where there are absolutely no issues, I have no idea why, but the dynamic is amazing. Our gigs are few a far between, but they are the highlight of each year musically. I have also been in a band recently with so many issues I could re make Bad news and Spinal Tap with new material based on it.

We have to accept its almost a Mustang Sally on the covers circuit but no point in playing it if your not going to try surely ? Some will notice of the drums and bass aren't doing some of the little joint fills, and if you choose a song you'd expect the other members to learn it well . Feel for you though, I did my time playing songs I wasn't keen on

Not quite the same but I cam across a band called Fossils and Foxes , which I thought was a good name, old blokes band fronted by younger ladies

We sometimes. Mic the bass drum, not to make the whole kit louder but just to give presence to the bass drum , if we could turn down snare etc anymore we would

Assuming we are talking small pub/function type gigs , then apart from the obvious drummer level , guitar pushing it etc then EQ has a big part to play . If the singer / guitar / keys are putting out low frequency they'll turn up to get above the bass rather then EQ themselves above it

I think he's a poser , I'm not a fan, but not sure how he can be considered a bad bass player within the context of what he does 24/7 with U2? Did, he create the bass line to New Years Day ? If so that's pretty iconic, and also one of the few lines in pop that most people would name if played solo, not a bad acheivement

I'm am Duran fan , can always enjoy them Jonny rotten with a music stand eh ! Love wolf Alice, but preferred them when they where more haunting and less aggressive

I don't read so perhaps not qualified to comment , but have been the only non reader in a working band etc etc and whilst I'm always impressed when people can covert dots in sound , there is nothing like a run through rehearsal to really get tight , confident and the dynamics of certain sections right , especially when your covering really layered produced songs, with a basic 4 instruments. With regard to the make it your own debate, I think both sides work, I love being in a band that tries to emulate well, and equally love the other creative approach. Both work for me, just different sports

In my experience there is no norm for this kind of work. I've charged £ 500 - £ 2000 ish when its been up to me to arrange the band, and dependant on location and what I need to provide. I've also been paid a fee of £150 per gig to play bass only, just turn up and plug in and walk away after. I've no idea what the band where being paid, and I didn't care, I know the organiser earned his money getting things right.

Id say its true , but altered to read Drums and Bass, if one is fighting against the other both fail. Once this is right , what you lay on top also depends on how good you are but without the foundation its a no show , even with world class vocals

Done it for years , though Ive just exited the less serious band I will be looking for a new venture with similar schedule But each band only does a handful of gigs each year First in the dairy secures the slot , everyone knows the score There has also been over recent years crossover as the drummer and keys player have also been in both at one point other

Every band is different just as every relationship is , but rules aside it's either for your or not. I'd be happy to be in a band where I have no input , but I'd have to love what I'm being told to do, if I didn't I'd feel as you do.
