I think the amp and speaker setup is critical.
This. My amplification is expensive (if you call mark bass that) but I can play a cheap bass in the pub and it sounds great through it. I'm also not worried about knocking my headstock on some basses, so some will only go with me to staged gigs.
Might be different tunings used throughout their set plus Trujillo has his warwick endorsement and will have to advertise his signature model
I wonder if many bassists with endorsers actually prefer other basses , I saw a guy play recently who had a status endorsement , he played 90% of the gig on a fender jazz , only picked up the status for a few songs

The Kobayashi Maru of band questions - who to go for.......
lojo replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
Singer No.2 might be sidetracked by her job, boys, another band, babies etc. So could singer no.1 of course, but she sounds more stable and sure of what she wants. These assumptions, like every reply on BC are based on less than very little information and should not be taken to seriously -
I remember being at a gig in an underground carpark as part of a Scooter Run, which got overtaken by NF skinheads, bottles and fights everywhere, we just got out one of the exits before the police locked it down. Best moment from those days though was the Stranglers walking out of the Guildford uni gig. I will add though as other have said, it was pretty peaceful really from what I remember, unless you wanted to enter the area where all the "rucking" or whatever you want to call it was happening, then it was a free for all with no one to blame but yourself.

Blondie - Atomic has been a favourite of mine at gigs for a few years now, usually get bored of songs by then, but love playing this

Played this with a band at the weekend for the first time, not a lover of the song, but I understand its a current functions song. Keyboard player had his keys split into sections, and had the Do Do's down perfectly, he nailed them.
I play Jazz. No-one stays 'til the end.
I think I left jazz gigs in the 90s where the solos are still going on

I guess your bass does say something about you, but its very complex, and who is to judge it anyway. Does someone playing a beat up old Fender have it because they brought it in 1970 and never saw the point or got GAS for anything else, or because they spent £1000s trying to look cool with a beat up old Fender (and who cares if thats whats making them smile), or because they genuinely wanted an old Fender and thought it would be a good cash investment. I brought an expensive bass (for me at least) when I was about 40, someone joked with my wife that I was having a midlife crisis, she replied "if thats all he is going to do then he can buy 4 of them". Sold the bass a year later , couldn't get on with it, only lost £50 , which was well worth the experience of having it.
Vintage: Proper hefty bass sound with bass played as it should be, as part of a rhythm section. Rugged and manly. Hi-Fi: Widdly-widdly twangy cutlery-drawer-down-the-stairs in your face inappropriate slappy solo nipple-rub for gaylords. I await the backlash with pleasure.
Please can you go onto the "all the gear" thread and end that with a similar summing up

If anyone outside of the bass playing community reads this thread , what would they think

Firstly , congrats on the new band .. I play a lot of covers , and can learn how to play all the parts of most pop/rock songs very quickly, the problem is though the structure can take a while or many listens to sink in, its ok knowing all the parts and rhythms, but if you are struggling to remember the structure and where odd bars and breaks are it can ruin the confidence of the song live. So I sit down and bar count and write out even the simple songs, as I find that really helps me digest it.

David Gilmour tour band - Guy Pratt on bass
lojo replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
I really like the single -
If a weekend warrior wants to buy expensive gear then thats their call, assuming they are earning their money and paying their taxes, who's to say otherwise. I see football players who can't control a ball wearing expensive boots, and know plenty of guys in my social circles who drive sports cars that do more than 70 and fill the boot with expensive golf clubs, way above their ability (im not into golf or cars) , whats the difference ? Personally I like playing through my mark bass rig and effects, which I suppose is expensive , but oddly my current bass of choice is a budget Yamaha, but thats because I like it, not because of any cash restraints i've put on myself buying gear. If we are going to talk about "all the gear, no idea" then I think Cyclists are currently leading this trend, but again, if thats their passion and they earn their money, good luck to them (though get some road safety lessons)

Does this mean all the for sale ads will now read "rare colour" -
Yup, too many people out there who have no vision and get too hung up on trying to replicate a recording rather than covering a song...
These things are never as black and white as that, whilst I understand what you are saying and agree that applies to some situations, we have been doing an 80s set for a year now and have a lot of fun and get satisfaction trying to get close to the original. Of course we can't recreate everything, but some songs work wonderfully well live with fewer instruments and others don't. The key seems to be figuring out what the guitar and keys are doing and the relationship between them, and alot of thought goes into it. Pop's always been this way , it's not just modern songs, most of the 80s stuff we listen to has loads going on. A good way to filter out what can work live is simply to youtube the original artist doing it, if it sounds bad by them, chances are we wont have any better equipment/synths, and less band members.
As above - I think its actually a sample. I'm lucky in that I have a very deep voice and can hit that Low C and D Think some sort of envelope filter (but very light on it) works well with an octaver if you dont want to get someone singing it. Or just sample it for a keys player. I think just have a listen to something like this, and you'll see its all in the playing tbh ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT3rJHs82A8
Just got list song on a list to learn , that link is so helpful

Should a dep be paid for a "freebie" gig?
lojo replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
Ok sorry... Don't really get what you mean but you seem cross.
Far from it, just sometimes musicians have it in for the guys who play for free like their ruining the industry or something. -
I was only trying to answer the question.
I know , Im just adding my views to the debate, used your quotes to link it, not attacking you my friend. -
Because too many people are prepared to work for free.

Sorry, it's actually because the cost of musical equipment and the cost of living have dropped so much that we are able to pass the substantial savings on to the customer.
Gigging for free or next to nothing does have a effect of things, but its a free market and people have the right to do it as a hobby. Many services and industries are effected by things, years ago you had to go to a printer/designer to get letter heads and logos done, my mate did mine when PCs became popular. Cheap labour or off duty firemen doing decorating for less than someone needs to charge to earn a wage etc. The invention of home accountancy packages, the list goes on. Bottom line is no one has the right to ask for their industry to be untouched by things like this (except bankers and farmers perhaps) I also believe if a musician is operating at a level where they are effected by someone playing the dog and duck for next to nothing, then they are not really making a career out of it anyway. -
Guess. Go on, guess.
I'll guess its that "Jazz" song
I find 500 miles totally groan inducing but the punters seem to love it.
This and Sit Down , I cant stand, but if I find them on a functions set list, the best thing to do is go with it.

Ive done freebie depping , friends band bassist was away when they did a charity festival. Its a great day , good stage and equipment, beer tents , camping and other bands to see. So I was happy to be part of the day. It would depend on who's asking , what it is etc and despite my above comment, generally I think the answer would be NO
