As others have said depends on the band. Every band requires a different approach. Can the drummer turn up and play a simpler bass / snare only , at least that way you are all working together on structures and feel etc. (rehearsals dont have to be full on) Might be pointless, might be constructive, again depends on the group ability, goals, and homework level I guess.

I'll add to the list of features a good covers/functions band keys player must have 5. The ability to determine which part out of the many that might be on the recording is most important 6. The ability to change sounds within a song correctly 7. The ability to make swift sound changes between songs, even if this means a set list tweak request 8. The ability to not play a bad chord during a keys only intro or outro , and get the timing right if it is a keys intro 9. The ability to keep off the left hand and not play conflicting cabaret style basslines Easy, one round every corner
when i think of Iconic Bass Player's in Pop. James Jamerson does not spring to mind.
Unless you see Motown as the pop machine of it's day , which some do , which commercially speaking I guess it was.

I'm getting a good synth sound out of my markbass super synth but it's taken a bit of tweaking and experimenting with tone and playing style away from the effect to get the triggering sounding clean.

If you where happy with the value of the trade at the time then there's nothing more to it.

Our next pub gig pays £300 , but we started in that pub at £220 , still doesn't put us in "kiss" teritory but if you can promote well and make the landlord happy then they'll up it. Bands I've been in for functions / corporates have charged anything from free to £2k Every band is different I guess though
OK, who has the oldest real road worn bass rig that you refuse to replace because it "just works" Meaning that you have tried the light weight fangle new stuff and you just can not be without your old faithful rig. Or have you flogged the new stuff you bought and hunted down what you had before. Pics welcome, who has the boldest and oldest "it just bloody works" bass rig that despite its weight, its worth lumping.
I cant join in as im a happy Markbass fan, but I do however believe my old orange rig was something that cannot be emulated, standing in front of that was tone heaven.

Little sustain on 24th fret on ONE string only (First world problems...)
lojo replied to biro's topic in Bass Guitars
If I go that far up the fret board I have to get the bus back, good luck solving it though -
I would fail badly if I took the test I will however play every note correctly at my gig on friday , and hopefully with good timing and dynamics (or whatever the real word for that is)
-
I don't read music , but I know a 5 string comes in handy with some bands when they alter the key of songs down the board toward the nut, particularly those that are in or near E and sound wrong played higher.

It's a very long email to have been typed on an iPhone

Its funny , we can emulate most things with electronics, but the differences between rounds and flats. Love em both, and hate only choosing one bass for most gigs (which usually has to be rounds)
Sorry to hear that, Pete. Especially with it being your 'baby' to begin with.
I went to see the Illigal eagles the other week, one of the guys that came along kept raving about seeing "nearly dan" and how great they are (I'm sure it was a while back before you left)

Do I answer for now , the date the thread was started, or next week?

I'm glad you went , im a big Stephen Stills fan and passed up on seeing CSN a few years back , wished I had gone as don't think he can do it for much longer, and I never got to see him.

I think if you can communicate prior and agree things with confidence then thats great. We did one last year where both I and the band we where supporting brought almost the exact same mark bass rig, in the end we just set mine up, but he would have happily shared also, seems silly we both dragged the gear there.

How was the bass sound, considering the recent thread about tone at venues ? Ive been really let down with the live sound of bass at the few biggish gigs ive seen, but I cant see Sir Paul not making sure the bass sound is right out front

There's loads so these are what roll off without thinking to much Clannad - Robin the Hooded man (from the TV show, but it sent me in a different musical direction as a teenager) Mr Clean - Freddie Hubbard (got me into skimming the top of the jazz genre) Walk on By - Stranglers (taught me Bass should rule the song, sometimes) Wooden Ships - CSN (the live version, cant get enough of it) There is a light - The Smiths (big effect on my teenage outlook) Ive 10000s more -
Any suggestions of good simple basslines to learn?
lojo replied to Naetharu's topic in General Discussion
Stand be me is a good one for all 4 fingers Learn simple blues riffs then 12 bar blues using different starting positions Alternatively get some lessons and follow the teachers homework -
2 x 210 seems to work for me for most things
Also, the LMIII retails for around £395, an MB7 distorsore £210, a compressore £140, and along with the a Chorus/Flanger was about £250, you all of a sudden can afford a Multiamp... and look at all the other goodies you get with that...
Thats kind of my thinking, I was going to upgrade my LM2 (which I loved) and was looking at Synth pedals and a new Flanger etc.
Yeah but it's too big though, I want everything in a LM3 box!
I did think about the size of it, but its not heavy, I used to carry my LM2 in a flight case along with a pedal board, now i've my Multi amp in a gator 3u case, but not pedal board. Not much difference really So far I'm happy and it has put an end to looking at pedals
