Edit: This number is equal to the highest ever population figure for London - in 1939, just before WWII.
This came up recently as a quiz question , until then I had no idea it's was that high just before the war

Classical music, what contemporary music compares to it ?
lojo replied to ambient's topic in General Discussion
I can lose myself with bands like Clannad, I know classical buffs say I'm easily pleased, but isn't that the secret to a happy life -
Funny things that people say to you at gigs
Our rented kit has arrived with no snare stand! Can anyone in the Brighton area loan us a snare stand for the evening please? We go on around 9-9:30. Expenses and more will be yours!
I just checked GAK, the shops shut but the phone line says 10pm and is a brighton number , long shot but if you get a person they may be able to help 01273 655400

Classical music, what contemporary music compares to it ?
lojo replied to ambient's topic in General Discussion
I can't think of a contemporary piece of music that's so hauntingly beautiful.
I can but it's all subjective , I've never got or understood classical music , not sure if that's just me or due to upbringing , lack of education etc. Either way it's nice to see you finding real joy in it , maybe I will also one day -
97 views and no reply Im I that odd, that i'm the only person who this hit the spot with? If so apologies, I'll go back to my weird life and let this drop down the pages

Been checking out a few demos on new basses (d Larkin etc) and got me thinking about the choices made in what to play So .. Your asked to demo a bass for a 2 min clip , you've got to do at least a few tone changes and maybe a pickup or 2 What playing styles, part of song, scale etc would you choose ? Btw, I'm havin a lazy start to the day
-
Are you starting the amp with gain and volume up then ? I've a little mark but always turn it on with controls at zero , so I've no idea if mine does this

I expect that actual bass to end up on eBay soon

Pub gigs are not worth doing for the money, so if we choose to do one, its usually for a good reason. Therefore I have no problem promoting the ones we choose to do. If you are just playing random pubs that don't get behind the idea, then your onto a loser and some frustrating nights putting all the effort in only to hump your gear home late without having much fun. Forget moaning about the pubs, make the gigs what your after yourself, and if its not possible then you've a decision to make. Don't except the landlords to do much, and the rights and wrongs of this don't really matter.
-
Make a flyer up so they can post it on their social media , you may also need to provide them with posters or A4 flyer printouts I know it all benefits the pub only (you get paid anyway) but it seems today its really up to the band if they want a good atmosphere to do some of this stuff.

Anyone know of a good rehearsal room (pa only) situated somewhere between KT10 (elmbridge, esher area) and the west side of Croydon ?
Is there much point in using all your own kit & trying to get the levels right in a rehearsal studio? I'd have thought the levels (and EQs) would be completely out compared to what you'd need in a big open room for a gig...
I agree, It was more to do with sounds (effects, and keys sounds for each song etc) along with some individual understanding of volume control within song parts, as the kind of gigs we will be doing we wont always have an engineer. The great thing about this 80s set is that every song requires a different sound, unlike the previous stuff weve been doing.
-
We took all our own gear/amps , as its really set up with specific sounds / settings from guitars, keys and bass (varied 80s) which is why it was so disappointing, it wasn't just a run through with any old amps, we where really looking at sounds, levels on different parts etc.
Not last night, but last week we did the first session and first of 2 sets worth of 80s songs for an 80s tribute, first gig booked for April I have got to say, It was the most satisfying session for a long time, musically and vocally wonderful, and lots of fun songs as far as I'm concerned
Had another wonderful session like the above quote last week, but last night a change of venue and Ive gone from this to starting a thread on rehearsal rooms issues.
-
Just wondering if its just me Putting together a new set , we've done a few session in a house , everyones on it and knows there stuff, sounds great , big smiles, and some productive tweaking of arrangments, keyboard sounds, parts and endings etc. Totally inspiring all round, amazing sound. Roll on to last night, final run through in a rented rehearsal room, PA monitor on ceiling only worked for 1 channel, which took us ages to figure out and really didn't help as it was not good enough to put clear BVs out on the other ones behind the drums, also the general sound was impossible. We are all experienced weekend functions players (warriors) and have dealt with all the live issues that exist over the years, and experienced quality rehearsal space. Some blame is of course on us, but how much, is it just me , or are these rooms often awful, at best it could be used to gain confidence with arrangements/structures, but nothing else ?
We have been asked to play at a large event - with a large number of paying guests. My question is this - Would you up your fee because you know you will be playing to significantly more people than you usually would?
You can quote different fees for different jobs, but don't think right to change after agreement.

What's the general standard of player who reads Basschat?
lojo replied to lou24d53's topic in General Discussion
I'm pretty good at what I do, but what I do is play covers in mainly low end functions. I've no real desire to do anything other than hold down the low end and replicate classic bass parts (geek style) whilst playing in a band at lively parties.
