1. Will be sending a pic of the settings to the op soon (need to get on a PC can't do from phone) It's all in the fingers has some truth, but there are singers who can impersonate , so surely many of us have the physical skill to do so, also aided by electronics we can manipulate . The results are of course going to vary but it's seems some of us like to tell others that emulation is impossible as our fingers aren't thiers.
2. I can see what they are getting at , and Andy Bell did ok when he coverted to bass for oasis. That Doesn't mean id enjoy thier set or the bass player they'll eventually find, and I doubt they will get anyone who get get around the fretboard on bass easily, hope they find someone.
3. To be fair the op states he's not jj and that kit is part of the tone (which is true in this case) Also blue finishes his post with "signal processing and aplification is a different discussion" I do think most of the players on here realize the the it's in the fingers thing (which should include wrist for picks )but I feel that we should be able to ask on here about trying to emulate classic bass sounds without being reminded of that. Part of the fun of being in a covers band for me is trying to copy the bass sound, so it could be Duran Duran then Stranglers , which requires some alteration , not only in playing style but also settings/effects
4. So now its not a precision
5. He's a clever guy who figured out how to become commercially successful with an existing genre . But he's also the Mumford of Rap.
6. Took my new second hand cheap BBN5 to a practice last night , gotta say what an amazing bass it is , I'll certainly be looking out at Yamahas now.
7.
Hi if you can PM me the settings I'd appreciate it. Cheers Paul.
Will dig get it to you over the weekend
8. I absolutely love the song "aquiesce" , but there is no other oasis song I'd choose to listen to.
9. This a good reason to not start saying, I like to put my own take on covers http://youtu.be/TLR8bOAA4-8
10. One of the first things I do when I get a new list of covers to learn is you tube live versions of the songs, then I have the radio version and any thing more interesting that comes up on the live version to work with. Some live versions have some lovely additions others are awful compared to the recording.
11. Have always instinctively honed into the bass lines in music from a young age, didn't get a bass until I left school, but did not even consider any other instrument.
12. I like the comparision to Hendrix's outlook
13. I used to gig this, managed to get a good sound out of a boss overdrive , I have got the settings somewhere if you want them ?
14.
but playing in a 'covers' band does not imply having to regurgitate that which even the original players did not do.
Thats fine if your project goal is to creatively cover a song in a different way (for example I love war paints Ashes to Ashes) , but sometimes I think people say this to excuse the effort to learn a part. At the moment we are getting an 80s set polished, and im doing my very best to play exactly what the original bass player played (even if that is taken from live versions)
15.
That's the other thing that puts me off covers bands. Not only do people not listen, they won't bloody count either! Why not?? Not having a go at you, by the way - this is a general moan!
The guys I play in my main band with, all come knowing exactly where all the parts are in the song, its part of the rule, rehearsals are run throughs , not for learning chords and structures I would not want to be a part of a covers band that did not have this approach, we are not professionals , but time is tight, so we must have a professional approach
16.
It's a shame that no-one really needs to do this anymore and it can only limit future generations musical ears which is so vital, not just for learning songs but for improvisation and last minute dep work.
As a busy family man, I am glad I no longer need to keep lifting a needle of a record or rewinding a slurry c90 in order to learn a tricky fill thats hard to hear in real time. It still takes effort, but tools are tools.
17. When I need to learn a new cover (I constantly have a to learn list) , I sometimes just listen to it and jam along and get it , other times I might look for clip that might save a bit of time (most are awful, but it doesn't take long shift through). For me, it takes longer to commit the structure to memory than the playing of the parts, most pop songs dont take that long at all to learn the lines, but Id have to hear it over and over to really commit the structure down (I find writing down the bars and noting things helps simplify stuff) There are no rules, everyone has different talents, time restrictions and goals.
18. Got my fender P (natural/maple Rocco signature bass) out of the case yesterday , I'd put it away to sell it and have spent time getting used to 2 other basses. Expected to hate playing it , but the opposite happened. Every other road I go down, the Fender P always calls back
19. I think Noel Gallagher says some quite funny tongue in cheek things and he knows how to give an interesting interview without being needlessly controversial.
20. Id imagine their are loads of music subcultures , but I'm to old to know about them
21. There was a great video on here of someone playing the whole JS line on a bongo Whilst if your just starting out it's to advanced, but it's well worth a look if you can start to incorporate even half if one of the fills , anyone know of it? Beware if it's open mike , some prat might ask you to play it in E
22. You guys lasted long enough for a whole LP?
