1. Years back there was no internet so I learned all covers by ear (rewinding tapes, moving the needle on records etc), so I guess I have that skill to a certain extent. Nowadays, I'll do the same with CDs/mp3s , but will occasionally search for chords , I know they are not 100% but they can point in the right direction and save a little time (at least with structure even if not with the lines). Also slow down type software and the ability to loop really helps with learning fills/runs accurately. So I don't read or know theory , but I'd never be so arrogant to say that more knowledge wouldn't improves ability to work songs quickly. Like others have said I'm not wanting cruise ship or theater gigs, but I have bee in situations where sheet music has been used and I wish I could sight read. Fortunately I managed to get through, but it wasn't fun.
 2. I use a line6 G30 every now and then , no issues , but I do sometimes worry about it during a gig , and always use new batteries
 3. What do you find useful about the 5 sting when playing in covers bands ... When you play covers of songs that are playable as the recording on a 4 string, do you still introduce the use of the B string ? Is it mainly for songs where the singer has opted for different key where a 4 string cant cope in a low enough position ? Anything else that makes the 5 string to best option in a covers band ?
 4. Same, had the jazz version , really great bass I'm tempted to take this as a back up
 5.
The Robert Cray Band are a great live band for their music content and tasteful playing, saw them recently at Guildford, terrific.
Was that at Glive , so wanted to be at that ?
 6. if id know this was dropping to this price id have put my P bass up for sale
 7.
Regardless, I hope she gets the opportunity to fulfill her dream.
Yes, a job with a family in a nice area , a decent bedroom and the use of a car and time to study
 8. Im not clear , did she have the correct papers or not ?
 9.
a touch of generosity
He really did think we'd all be grateful
 10.
I do keep one P bass strung with flats, but have never gigged it.
Dare you
 11.
Goodness. I would never mention The Eagles in the same sentence as the entirely dreadful Coldplay. Meisner and Schmitt wrote some great lines.
I have to +2 that also.
 12. Best wishes and congratulations, your idea came to fruition and is going strong 17 years later, great achievement
 13. If he genuninely had unforeseen tech issues and I had a good feeling about him I might have helped This is a different situation too someone not coming prepared and assuming others will provide However , only you where there and able to judge this particular case
 14. Is there a way you can run your amp through a hifi , I find playing along this way I still get a nice defined bass tone through my b&w speakers but it can do that at a low volume where's my amps can't
 15.
Is no-one gonna do the gag? OK, I will: I could play "Stairway To Heaven" when I was 12. Jimmy Page didn't actually write it until he was 22. I think that says a lot...
Rip Colin Grigson , class material never to be repeated
 16.
Last night I did a pub gig through a mark bass rig on a P bass with my old flats on it, Eq all flat 2 other gigging bassists in the crowd , both where saying they loved the tone Must admit , so do I
Due to other references in the thread I'm also adding my Kiogon wiring loom to the spec list of the bass mentioned above. Couldn't be happier with my tone
 17. A few years back a few of the pubs on one circuit where suggesting a bucket be passed round , If I remember it was £150 plus bucket , it worked out as good or better than the usual £2-250
 18. Last night I did a pub gig through a mark bass rig on a P bass with my old flats on it, Eq all flat 2 other gigging bassists in the crowd , both where saying they loved the tone Must admit , so do I
 19. Sounds like you've stumbled accross an expert in Xilddx, so I hope you can have some success following his guidance (basschaters can really make difference ) I'd say (from a completely non professional point of view but a personal one) that if you can get physically fit enough to play , that having a hobby you love is good for you mentally , I'm much less stressed and a better family man when I'm enjoying my hobbies
 20.
Didn't know what all the fuss was about. Until I listened. I am not a prejudiced man and - though some may believe otherwise - it is a very rare day when I find myself reduced to sheer, choking rage Let us set aside the ham-fisted arrangement, lumpy mix and turgid 'beat'. Let us quell the nausea we may have experienced upon viewing the soupy, simpering visuals which accompanied the 'music'. Let us ignore issues of provenance and draw a veil over questions of faithfulness to the original. The truth is that this performance of 'God Only Knows' is truly the most appalling piece of sh*t I've heard in a long life that includes enforced exposure to the oeuvres of Paper Lace and Mr Russ Abbott. One may not even recline on the old chestnut of 'the valueless-ness of subjective opinion in musical criticism'. By every objective measure the song falls so low as to be skimming the bricks at the bottom of the sewer. The fact that it is intended to support a charitable effort in no way detracts from its unutterable loathsomeness. In fact it makes it worse; if this is the best the BBC can do in a noble cause, God help us all when they aren't much bothered. Stuff for charity doesn't have to be half-arsed, y'know; the authenticity of the charitable transaction is not undermined by professionalism, taste and talent. In any event, it is immaterial whether a musical performance is intended to relieve - say - the suffering of the Thomson's gazelle or merely to line the pockets of its composer. A song's ulterior purpose is irrelevant to its inherency. This being the case I shall now proceed to youtube, there to seek out 'The Horst Wessel Lied'. It may have been the Nazis' marching song but it's musically superior to this bloated, formulaic, self-regarding train-wreck. It will also make my ears vomit, the better to resume normal listening. .
So you didn't like it then?
 21. I've made the mistake of wondering to far forward and being disappointed with the out front bass sound, so as long as I can hear tone of my rig and pretend the world is ok , I'm happy Great question , just when I thought every conceivable live bass one had been asked on here
 22.
Rather sanctimonious and judgemental if I may say
Come on don't bring the thread down, no ones suggesting the cause isn't great or being spiteful , it is was it is and you ain't going to be putting it on your to go playlist either , are you?
 23.
I agree. As is often said in the "pick V fingers" discussions..."use both.. the more tools you have at your disposal the better, depending on the music". Cant see why it should not apply to strings as well.
Do you mean pick v fingers on rounds or flats ?
 24.
Dunno. I LOVED the first 23 seconds, then it was OK until Brian May done his bit.
I was trying to give it a chance until I saw Chris Martin laying on the floor , at least I think thats what I saw I've not gone back over it Heard it 3-4 times on the radio today though, I suppose if it is the best way to raise money through a song then thats that, we are a minority and they are not aiming it at us. Perhaps they should have us ring up and pledge in order to stop it playing.
 25.
Is selling both an option? Maybe there's something lighter than the Marshall which you like the sound of more than the MB?
This seems sensible Im not sure how dirty sounding the Marshall is but the Ampeg PF and the Orange terror are all in the MB price and weight range, I'm sure there are others also that are not just clean, LM tube ?
