1.
I'm competitive and if I don't feel like I'm going to be a certain standard in something then I guess I sack it off. And my expectations in playing are not that high. I know someone who plays guitar they have for 30 years they spend a lot of time and money on it and frankly he is still rubbish. I don't want to be that guy
As someone who has played for years without lessons, and to be fair with breaks, I can say I along with the guy you reference have no choice, it's something I am compelled to do, if you give up its because its not you deep down. Having said that if you get into playing with others, it may light a spark , give it a try first
2. Best wishes Nigel , It was obvious you believed and had your heart in the project , one door and all that, I am sure you'll find something else you can apply the same passion too in time.
3. I find green or blue big triangle ones the easiest, .88 or 1.0 Oddly , I find it really hard to play with a pick practicing at home, but once with a band and the drummer, can really dig in and keep it solid.
4. a bit pricey, you could buy all the CDS, and a cheapo full size jaco style bass for that
5.
And just bought the CD from Bandcamp. I love it when I see a Basschat person's band and really get off on it and have to buy the music.
Is it possible to have a thread that lists all the availble CDs from BC bands and how to order them ?
6. Glad there is no sonic blue option so I'm not tempted
7. To answer the thread title , it just means your GAS is getting worse. Nothing you cant do on a good cheap bass, with a decent set up through a good amp or pa, my opinion only of course
8. Playing covers can only help you as a band can't it ? As long as everyone feels they have a few of their own favs in the set I'm sure it will go great Good luck in that and of eventually writing your own stuff as is your dream
9. Ive done the pa in some hall charity gigs and corporate events when also playing, its a bloody nightmare. However .. Recently did a hall charity gig and insisted someone else do the PA, a firm where paid £450 to supply and run a rig, and it was a bloody nightmare. So no don't do it, but if your in charge of who is hired to do it, make sure they know what they are doing.
10.
Indeed. One should learn all the old chestnuts: Sweet Home Alabama, Mustang Sally, Red House, Down At The Doctor's, Blue Suede Shoes, Jumping Jack Flash, Get Back, Sweet Home Chicago, Summertime Blues, Whole Lotta Love, Pretty Vacant. In fact the beginner should learn anything that gets slagged off on BC for being a cliche song or a cliche artist. They're cliches because they get played an awful lot, whether we 'like' them or not.
Yep, and the fact we don't like them is because we have gone through that stage (almost like the mainstream real book) and now are bored with them, and sometimes think its cool to hate them publicly
11.
Attempting Superstition is the mark of a terrible cover band.
I kind of agree, but starting out he may need to learn these as their are a serious number of bands who pick them and that might be the route into playing with a band at this stage
12. Also depends on their definition of Black. Im white skinned, but had a very dark father, I've had people say Im not white even though I look it, so do I qualify for this gig ?
13. Start with all your cliché pub band rocky songs I guess .. Honky Tonk Woman Hard to Handle Superstition That kind of thing
14.
imy first tab was walk on by, stranglers which i can just about get through if i practice enough as only been seriously learning for around 5 months or so.
Ive been gigging that recently, its hard work (but fun) to hold down well with all the fills during the instrumental, so fair play if you can get anywhere near it as a beginner. Start jamming with anyone you can find, I still find today that I can pull of lines with live bands that I cant at home, there is something special about playing with others, its what bass is designed to do.
15. A few years back, need to find a more recent one, but I always seem to be hiding behind someone
16.
I'm fairly sure that it's meant to be a joke. Not that it's funny.
Thats my guess, none of their influences I believe have black bass players either Does anyone really notice this stuff ?
17. Wow, what a find, think a black dog clip appeared on a BBC doc a while back Have a great gig !
18. Did you revive Janis in your kitchen ?
19.
Maggie Bell was suggested earlier, right era and style, but my kitchen find is not Scottish!
Sorry didn't see another Maggie Bell guess, back to the drawing board
20. Maggie Bell ? Im just off to see if there are any great singers in the MILs kitchen , that has to be the coolest recruitment of a singer I've ever heard of
21. Is the upper register the spacer between the body and the fretting area ? I do the occasional slide up on the A string to hit a higher octave and use the upper D and G for various runs and fills , but I have to confess never been much past 12 or 13 on the E
22. Yep go back and explain , it will help them and they maybe good about it , if not you've lost nothing Police won't be of any help , no point (unless the pub are taking lots of them ) as it's most likely just a stray one One thing if definately not do though is try to pass it on
23.
Deep Purple's Highway Star. I rehearsed it once, about 10 years ago, for a gig that got cancelled. It was awesome. Never got to gig it though.
Did that song for a few years in a classic rock band , great fun Staying on the rock theme, I've always wanted to do Ace of Spades, was supposed to gig it at a festival as our last number, but we had to cut the set short during the set (to make sure the headline band started on time) Rehearsed it with another band (not a rock band by nature) and it absolutely rocked on the first run through, but it never worked again once, so we dropped their idea, odd how that happened. Still want to gig it, when it works it's so much fun. So for me ace of spades, and a 100 others ranging from pop to Americana
24. Just found the link to this thread whilst searching for Ernie's discography , really love his playing and only just discovering him
25.
2 gigs a monthy is a full diary?
To qualify, yes for them thats what they wanted, it's the perfect balance of weekend rock and family duties, nice to see them doing what they set out to though. I agree re not looking back, but it does stir up some emotion even though you logically don't make it an issue.
