1. Forced myself to watch this in an effort to understand a bit more about whats commercial, my kids are 10 and 12 and really getting into their music now. I thought I would be a grumpy nearly 45 year old , but whilst there has always been lots dross mixed in with things I like throughout all years, I did really like some of it John Newman's singing style is alien to me, but one of the songs was very soulful and had a great bassline played on an electric bass of all things The number 1 (Happy ?) I have heard a few times with the kids, and think it is a wonderful song that would not have been out of place in the 70s So all in all , I think commercial pop music is not as bad as I us middle aged types like to think , its just as varied as always.
2. The one thing I don't understand is why would someone want to play their own songs if they new their fellow band members would struggle to busk it and do it any justice at all, surely thats not in the interest of the one who wants their songs heard ?
3.
Err, yes, but have a look at his incredible bass collection on his website ( http://www.daveswift...ges/basses.html ) and you'll see why he may have some difficulty choosing...
He's got most of your old basses
4.
14k and not a single knob or flashy led
Those are additional upgrades, he's only got the standard model with no air con
5. Not sure why the anti proclaimer comments, these guys with just an acoustic get all types singing along , they are fairly unique in the commercial pop world, think they deserve a little more respect.
6.
That would be Ken Bruce. I nearly split my whisky reading that. You're not wrong.
Don't knock him, pop master is a part of my daily routine Didn't see the show last night, read the thread to see if it was worth catching up on
7. Next time bring a mask and really really hash up your busking
8. Don't forget the PA system requirements and someone to operate it, assuming you've done everything else well and the punters are there etc. this will make or break the evening re the band Just did a local charity gig, around 180 guests , tickets / bar / raffle and auction (some cool stuff donated) raised around £4k The event went well due to the number of people involved in promoting, the bar was also run by helpers not the venue, so all profits went to the charity
9.
Next time he's at your gig, ask him to keep an eye on the guitarists technique and the vocalists pitching too as they've been looking for some advice on those issues
Can I change my answer to this one
10. Post deleted was silly I'm bored
11. Id most likely tell the guy, sorry I cant take this on right now (after a gig in a crowd) and suggest getting together to have a session at someones house, if he follows up on this (which might be unlikely) then you may learn something in the correct setting to do so.
12. a years money has come and gone In Fender Precision , Hohner B2A out Stingray 2EQ
13. I am not a bassist or a musician, though I have played the bass in many bands for many years
14.
Well you can simulate the effect of zero G by playing with the neck pointing vertically up (or down) as that would all but remove any gravitational influence on the string vibration.
Wouldn't it just change the way gravity effected the strings, not remove it ?
15. My wife won't let me have one , says they are unsexy.
16.
Obviously we can only speculate here
Nah , someone's bound to know 100% for sure , no debate
17. Preference Only ? Precision No Ray No Precision
18. If you can make it make the right noises then any judging won't be able that, surely that's all you need to worry about
19. In 2009 I did a pub garden gig, varied run of the mill rocky covers, to the left and behind me was an entrance to the bar which was lined up with older fellas leaning against the wall sipping their pints watching the band, the garden was busy so the rest of the band just faced forward. I kept looking round and about 2 metres from me was a guy in a suit that I thought I knew, during a few songs I kept catching his eye and trying to place him. Turns out it was Ronnie Wood, I didn't click as at that time all the images of him in my head where 10 years prior and it was just before his antics made the papers re the girlfriend etc. We played a stones tune, ahhhhhh
20. Great thread and pics, sorry cant add to it
21. I recently brought a signature bass without knowing it It's a natural / maple P , factory fitted reverse pickups, model as used by Rocco Prestia, not sure how many where made
22. he should watch it , socks on slippery tiles
23. Seem to remember that guy from bros resting his chin on his bass, ive not seen higher
24.
I have a tendancy to mod every bass I get to my own preference anyway so it would be a waste of time!
In essence making a sig model of your own
25. Assuming the singer is not the guitarist (or drummer) then can they play anything , keys, sax etc ? Just because their having a vocal rest , they still maybe able to join in on the instrumentals
