Im sure this must have been done before, if so please forgive me and post a link if pos. Question is, my daughter aged 9 is now doing proper guitar lessons, learning to read and play from the start Obviously fretting is easier on the nylon, but as I learnt the hard way , no teacher, sore fingers on both 6 string and bass it makes me wonder should it be straight to steel. Teacher is cool whatever route we take, but I want to give my daughter the best chance, is this nylon string thing the widely accepted leaners route? Or is it debatable among teachers?

You can do what you like , it's all art Done it twice, once I played acoustic guitar (with click track in ear during an intro) and once as a bass player (over a few gigs) , only advice is make sure you can hear it well , cause obviously you have to stay in time with it. edit Just read you've 2 guitars , can't one of them do something with any keys parts, or are you trying to recreate songs exactly ?
First off, I am sorry to see that my 'feedback on anything' has created a little bit of drama 'for one of a better term'.
Mate, on most forums a "drama" can be started on a thread on how to spell "drama" Personally I'd love to see more threads with people's originals in , good luck with the writing
I think it's a gigantic waste of time. I also haven't set foot in there since I was rounded on for "offending dyslexics" by having the audacity to start a thread about common misspellings on eBay (Squire, kneck etc.). So it's OK for some people to poke fun but if you're not part of the OT gang then you're not allowed to even attempt to be observationally mildly amusing? Fine. That was years ago, but I'm a grudge bearer. Any time I've appeared in there since, the thread has been moved into OT after my contribution. OT can poke it.
One thing you have to get used to in OT is that sometimes you'll be misinterpreted, or jumped on for PC issues that may not even be so, I've no opinion on your issue, you may have overstepped the mark or be innocent, either way these things happen to us all in OT My only feedback on this thread is that it's not needed, BC is fantastic and a small charge to sell in that section is far from unreasonable

Don't think anyone should be apologising for giving honest feedback, the Op was brave enough to put it out for comment. He then has to make his own choices what to take on board and what to ignore.

They are brilliant , as is lot of the work they did after, I don't think too much about his personal life, if I did that I'd not listen to alot of my favourite bands or enjoy watching some football teams. Fav track is Bombs Away ! Edit, just remembered I got beaten up aged 12 for wearing a police badge, other kids couldn't understand that I liked music outside the expected.

If I go into a room , the rehearsal is generally for arrangements, and making sure things work in the song , so if I don't have an amp that sounds as good as Id like it's not really that much of issue that I'd make the effort to load and unload my own. Same as if the drum kit is a bit dull, I know the drummer will sound better at gigs on his own kit, no sweat really
So, that theory is disproved neatly and quickly.

No 2 people ever think the same thing. They might have the general idea, but the way they frame that idea and spin it is different from person to person. And that is very much why no 2 bass players ever will sound the same. I'll never hear what Flea hears, and I'll never hear what any of you hear. I can only hear what I hear, so that is what I will play.
I totally agree with you on that, I'm just saying that if you try to listen for a gap in bass playing that has never been done before, you'll struggle to hear one, as your post suggests , your own sound will happen naturally, you can't force it, therefore to me there is no point in trying to set yourself apart from others, it will happen anyway, either with good or bad results
What's the point in having an artistic outlet and sounding like somebody else? Maybe Van Gogh could have painted like Da Vinci, but what would have been the point? It certainly doesn't hold as much merit as being able to express your thoughts and feelings in your own thing. It's not about being self absorbed, it's about playing like yourself.
Not sure how many bass players there are, have been, or will be, but I'm pretty sure there is not enough variation for everyone to have a distinguishable individual feel and tone. Whilst I have enjoyed creating songs and lines and gigging them, and I'm not saying it's not about art or expression, but bass playing to me is about being solid, in timing and dynamics, supporting, driving the song when needed.

I've gone full circle, been in a gigging originals band etc, but now to the dislike of alot of basschaters ,I just play covers, and get real pleasure out of trying to recreate exact lines and sounds as closely as I can. Maybe one day I'll go all original and inventive again (at least IMO anyway) Your right though, you shouldn't feel you have to do anything like anyone else (that doesn't rule out learning from them )
-
I don't like over using my main gigging amp at home, even if it has headphones/aux for practice, so after moving house and losing my music room , I've gone through all kinds of apps to use for practice (learning covers mainly), everyone of them has it's issues, and mainly it's having to load the songs in, you can't just use YouTube etc. So , I think I should just go for a traditional , small , practice amp , aux in , headphones out etc Is the Ampeg BA 108 any good, I don't need it for anything other than low vol or headphone jam along?
-
I do play along to shuffle sometimes, but I've never used a dice

Getting over a mishap well and quickly is part of being a band, get on with it. However if it happens to often, then it most likely means you are not gig ready either on the whole, or those songs.

Encourage learners, or 'Tell it like it is'..?
lojo replied to Dad3353's topic in General Discussion
Instruments and sports are odd things, if you've the bug to learn , you will , dispute outside influence. I know a guy who built a studio in his garden , kitted it out with instruments , all for his kids, they are all in thier 20s now and not one of them can play anything, they didn't have the bug! Yet, me and many others learned to play instruments without any support in doing so Of course a good teacher will lift you to higher levels , but I don't think bad advice or lack of will force someone who really has the bug to give up Also , in modern life, learning what to believe on forums spans wider then basschat -
This is interesting , where do wizard thumpers, or Big fit into the Fender era ?

"What's your fee for dep work?". Errrr, dunno...
lojo replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
There is no exact amount, unless you are only prepared to play for an exact amount. For me, playing is a fun self financing hobby, so if i'm asked to dep, my first thought is not the fee, this is how I evaluate 1. who is the band, are they good 2. will I enjoy it , will it be fun 3. Is the effort (amount of songs to learn, rehearsal) worth it for a one off, will I enjoy that 4. Whats on the table if its not charity, generally if i've ticked 1 to 3 then im happy with a small fee (even 1/5 of pub or small function money), a higher fee is nice (like wedding), but it wont change anything if I cant tick 1 - 3 Also, as a Dep, i've never been asked to pay toward any rehearsal cost, which is the way it should be. -
Basschat is your friend. Since I've joined this place, apart from consumables like strings, I've not bought from anywhere else.
this is true for me also basses are not something many people wish to buy, a niche market, so you have to do the leg work yourself if you wish to go test driving I guess

A nightmare up to around 50 seconds where to his credit he gives up the pop's and holds it down, tries again later and is a bit more on it and relaxed. Guess we've all scored own goals (or at some point will) , must have been fine most of the time before, or wouldn't have got the gig

There's always those that argue that their mate only survived because he wasn't wearing a seat belt, but that's like saying my auntie smoked and lived to 90, some people just beat the odds. I'm guilty of not wearing mine on short trips, but air bags can fail, and even at just a few miles per hour, a bump can do massive damage to the human body. There really is no excuse is there

Can you get some pics ?
