1. yes, its possible to be great at both, though not every is great at even one.
2. I'm not a fan of slap bass, no matter how technically clever, the odd pop sounds great, but I really love the use of it in this well know tune ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwJNMwykLf8&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Badge whore

Would like and happily use a Ric copy , but as far as fenders go I do like the badge, but that's more to do with my nostalgia feelings about a fender bass , I have owed and gig a jazz and ibanez p bass, which where both great. Funny thing though is I'm still debating if I should destroy / remove the fender logo off a neck I'm using a on build in favor of a matching headstock with a custom personal logo
4.
As I've come to accept over the years, I just don't like P basses.........but that is beautiful
Total opposite here , love p bass but this does nothing for me .
5. 3 things are needed for a reasonable level rehearsal 1. Pa or voice and/or vocals to be good/strong 2. Quite sticks and dynamic drummer who doesn't just play full on 3. Guitarist who is not only concerned about his own sound Simple
6. Not sure if your talking about original ideas , in which case when I did gig in an oringals band is remember them all as we practiced them alot. If your talking covers, then I remember the lines , just need some cards with structures on for some of the songs where I can't confidently remember the arrangements. If I could read and write music then I might write them down, who knows
7. Too many to mention , off the top of my head .., A CSN tour in the 70s The Blockheads Duran Duran The imagined village
8. Can someone give an example of a song they can play well on a "fast neck" that that can't play well on a sticky neck?
9.
I wish the discounts for multiple sets of strings still applied for sets of different gauges... Otherwise, excellent.
Have you tried ringing them, just maybe the web isn't set up to deal with this but they may?
10. They are great, I've the added bonus that I can also pop in as I'm only up the road
11. I did my perfect gig a while back, no hour drive home after, it was so close I even ran home during the break to say goodnight to the kids. First gig I've actually drunk at for a long time.
12. I just like a good party atmosphere , dont mind if it's a pub or a private function. No real ambition beyond that these days.
13. Try this if your struggling to move .. A couple of years ago I depped for a rock band at a small festival, my wife came and after commented that I moved around more than usual, which was a good thing, though the reason was it was a hot day and I'd spilt a pint over myself whilst setting up and the wasps where all over me.
14. I agree Coldplay and keane will be superseded, personally may not like some of the other choices but can't argue they have not stood the test of time I'd like to get John Peels view on it
15. A bit dated but I've always loved this Burdon track http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mvs8U0oxnlI&feature=youtube_gdata_player
16. Moondance Well someone was going to say it
17. I recently got 2 x ported markbass 210s in a trade Only gigged them once, but it worked really well and I didn't need a lift with the cabs
18.
No. I was interested in WHY people are in cover bands. There was no subtext.
I know that's how you started it
19. Some of my most fun gigs have been playing this sort of stuff
20. This thread should be retitled "justify why you are in a covers band"
21. Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I noticed he had a bass branded T shirt on, so I said, “wow I love bass, do you play?” He said, "Yes." I said, "What do you play?" He said, "A Fender" I said, "Me, too! a J or P?" He said, "a P." I said, "Me, too! a 4 or a 5" He said, "4." I said, "wow me too, maple or rosewood?" He said, "rosewood." I said, "Me, too! Pick or Fingerstyle?" He said, "Mainly Fingerstyle." I said, "Me, too! Active or passive?" He said, "Passive" I said, "Me, too!, Do you play covers or originals" He said, "covers." I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over.
22.
and no, we don't slavishly copy an original note for note. What would be the point in that?
Sometimes I go to great lengths to know the bassline note for note, either because I like it as is or find a particular live version that I like, whats wrong with that?
23.
Except that bit. It was really the Galactic Union.
No the Union are the ones who don't believe in learning covers, the Confederates do, as he suggests.
24.
The West has always been very good at taking advantage of other peoples natural resources and then, once the financial rewards are diminished, deciding that everyone else has to abide by an 'environmental policy' that wouldn't have been required if we hadn't raped the resource in the first place. My personal feeling is that if the West is going to try and dictate their environmental policies on indigenous people, they should, at the very least, compensate them for that loss. Imagine the furore if there was a policy banning Project Managers tomorrow!
Very good post
