1. I played in a jazz band as the only non reader, everyone else could sight read, I tried alot of notes in walking pattens once, then I knew not to use that one again in that part of that song I know its far from helpful
2. A singer I sometimes gig with works most Fridays and Saturday's doing a pa gig with a laptop She gets the whole fee to herself , so although she will admit she loves gigging with the band better than on her own, she rarely earns the same. Plenty of weddings/function arrangers don't believe they need a full band
3.
Yep that's exactly where I got it. Doesn't it depend on how you're sitting?
It assumes your sitting as instructed in the example I gave
4. Fender Japan or Mexico would be a nice little trip
5. I never had lessons, but a book I brought which taught me fingerstyle said the strap height is best set to the same as sitting, so Ive always done this more or less Couldn't be changing during a gig as some suggest ?
6.
I can guarantee there are a lot of people twice/three times my age with far less playing experience that will be given regular and friendly service in music shops, or treated with respect at a gig etc...
It's not about you and it's not confined to musicians, in life people have preconceptions, rightly or wrongly and you'll get treated wrongly as you see it, throughout your life by some of those you come across An example A guy I knew through work went off to buy a band new land rover after work one day, he'd thought about it for ages and done all his research He went in his dirty clothes after a days work, when he test drove the car at the local dealer he felt that the salesman was not taking him seriously, so he didn't buy it even though he wanted it. Next day he went to another dealer and brought the car outright without even asking for a test drive We've all done it and had it done to us
7. Depends on the player I guess Fender Ps are just cool Lemmy makes a ric look cool Entwisle makes an orange explorer with a fender neck and gold hardware look cool, no one else could
8. I've been self employed since 1995 and most employed people have no clue that your billable hours need to cover wages, overheads, tools, insurance, sick pay, holiday time, vans, cars, phones, pcs, office supplies, etc etc And those billable hours as the first post said is around half of the hours you actually devote Most of these craft jobs are a lifestyle choice rather than a great money making career
9. I only play covers now (duck) and I get the best of both, regardless which band im with Some songs require very subtle basslines, and others are songs which are built around a prominent up front bass part Yes I agree alot of punters dont understand the bass, but there are always a bunch of people who do love if not know music in every functions crowd Just enjoy your music, thats that I started bass, not because I thought it would be easier than anything else, but because I always picked out basslines for as long back as I remember when I heard music
10. Surely you can't play anything unless it goes through your imagination first?
11. Id have the band play a medley of all 3 jive bunny style at the end
12. I think if your worried that it people may judge you by your bass, then as long as what you play is solid, however basic, then all anyone can say is well played, regardless of what bass you play
13.
Remember you're auditioning them as much as they're auditioning you!
+1
14.
Totally - give me a free copy today and I'd throw it away... Good times, these are the good times Leave your cares behind, these are the good times Good times, these are the good times Our new state of mind, these are the good times Happy days are here again The time is right for makin' friends Let's get together, how 'bout a quarter to ten Come tomorrow, let's all do it again Boys will be boys, better let them have their toys Girls will be girls, cute pony tails and curls Must put an end to this stress and strife I think I want to live the sporting life A rumor has it that it's getting late Time marches on, just can't wait The clock keeps turning, why hesitate You silly fool, you can't change your fate Let's cut the rug, a little jive and jitterbug We want the best, we won't settle for less Don't be a drag, participate Clams on the half shell and roller-skates, roller-skates It ain't 'Paradise Lost', is it?
Thier are various levels to the meaning of this song , and a whole degree course could be built around just one verse Your just not digging deep enough Oh and the rappers delight version, great fun
15. Some of my favorite music CSN, stills, America type stuff has very supportive but subtle baselines, fuzzy Samuels was a great player on this stuff But I can also enjoy a grooving instrumentalist type bass line, funky jam etc, but that has to be solid and not in any way slappy
16.
I like some Funk and I like some Reggae. I also don't like some Funk and I don't like some Reggae. Pretty much the same as any music really-I either like it or I don't.
great answer
17. Sensi dub vols 1 - 999 helped me learn bass So did alot of Funk Doesn't mean I rate my playing it though, but ive had 25 years of fun I guess id know a fair few rock bassist types who don't like anything thats not that straight
18.
is "hit me with your rhythem stick" indie?
guess it was, stiff records i think ? That smiths line is great, I nearly gigged it once, but the singer got cold feet before it got into the set
19. This is one of those songs where you can really have fun Learn the roots , then add the passing notes with the feel you hear on the record I'm guilty of never really learning the exact baseline on this and playing it slightly different each time depending on what the band is made up of and how much space there is
20. Its bad enough having debates off topic with decent bass playing types, but with guitarists ! (yes, I know there are some jolly decent ones (chaps not players) before anyone pipes in)
21. Pics or it didnt happen Ask a friend to help
22. Should really slag it off, its advertised on the site ! Was it chrome over green or green over chrome before it got roadworn ?
