Thinking of selling my lovely Phil Jones Briefcase It´s the very nice Cream finish (not the boring black one) It is 100% cosmetically perfect and also 110% perfect working order. Only used for a few acoustic jams and a few quiet bedroom rehearsals. NEVER been cranked! Only ever had volume at before halfway. EQ is tip top on this little amp and really gives the bass some life. Only sellng as got a PJ Flightcase, so this is surplus to requirements. It comes with cover, tools, Power supply and tools. Still under warranty too! Looking for around [s]350[/s] 325 plus shipping Colin " class="ipsImage" /> " class="ipsImage" /> " class="ipsImage" /> " class="ipsImage" /> " class="ipsImage" /> " class="ipsImage" /> " class="ipsImage" /> " class="ipsImage" />
I can only speak from my own experience with my SUB. I wouldn't dream of changing a thing. The SUB has a great sound all on it's own. I just don't understand the lack of beef comment. Mine has it in shedloads. Perhaps there is something wrong with the bass that it isn't giving out enough. I'll grant you that a change of pickguard improves the looks but apart from that I struggle to know why you would want to change anything. The SUB is what it is. It's not a Ray. I actually prefer the SUB sound to the Ray that's why I kept it and sold my Ray. I don't think that the differences are vast but the SUB has it's own sound. The SUB is also an American made quality bass. It just doesn't cost as much as a Ray. As for the weak G string - I had it on my Ray but not on the SUB. Sometimes I feel we get into a mindset of always assuming that a standard pup somehow must need replacing. However, it's all down to how we feel about our own instruments. If you can't get on with a bass, sell it on until you find the Holy Grail for you. All the best!
+2 I don´t see the pont in comparing them to Ray´s or the EB Sterling range . The Ray is a fantastic sounding bass and will continue to be massively popular for many more years. Its bright, snappy and has growl by the bucket. The SUB is an amzing bass too, in its own right. The looks (for the most part) of the Ray and a sound all of its own. much more guttural and thick, but still retains brightness. It is a US built instrument and iwas ncredible value at the time of its introduction. I think someone here has already mentioned Mr S. Ball´s comment of including a $100 bill with each one. They were discontinued because at their price point, they were proving very popular indeed and sales of these units began to eat into sales of Rays and Sterlings. EBMM did not want to canabalise their market share, so dropped them from the product range. I do agree that the S/H prices have gone up a bit, but this reflects the quality and rarity of the bass (based on such a short production run). It may also reflect consumer demand for traditional values i.e. Made In USA- Hence why people often ask "Where was it made?" first, when enquiring about S/H Fender, Ampeg, Marshall etc products. Because production of many familiar brands now takes place in the Far East, many doubt their quality and this pushes the S/H prices of US made gear upwards I love the sound of my SUB and the neck is fantastic too. The only reason mine is for sale is I am looking for one last (for a long time) new bass and the SUB is the only one I dont get to take out a lot. I have tried the RAY34 and while I liked the look (finish is superb and the matching headstock was a nice touch) and sound of it, I felt it was a tad overpriced for what it was. Now perhaps they have come down in price since their introduction, but I know they are not for me. As for the weak G issue-never experienced it on any MM bass I´ve played (though I haven´t played more than 4 ) Col
Seriously considering the 5 Pro now guys. Thanks! I´m using a Mesa 400+ at the moment, would this be good move?
Well, its not going to sound like the Mesa, but it will sound pretty damn sweet! In terms of weight, it will be much lghter than the 400+, but still be pretty hefty! I didnt get on with my 400+ and was off to buy an SVT of some sort after selling it (think I wanted the CL or VR at the time) when I came across the 4 PRO and 5 PRO. I really loved both after trying them. I did really like the 5PRO´s distortion and octave thingy, but the 4PRO sounded slightly warmer and rounder-even on the same EQ settings. Actually the shop I tried them in were really cool- they let me run both, each one through an 8x10 at the same time, so I could just pop out the cable from the amp and try each one in real time without messing around at the back with a bunch of cables. After a good solid A/B type run through, I decided 4 PRO. In the end I wasn´t able to get one (the shop sold both the 4 and 5 in a week) and then Ampeg changed hands and the supplier became unreliable. I came across the B500DR (a US made Ampeg digital 4 channel amp) in another shop and after a quick demo, I left the shop with it and a nice bit of change! I later decided I wanted an all valve sound too and got lucky on a trade for my guitar rig- Marshall VBA400 halfstack. Had given up on the SVT thing for ages, but nothng can really kill ´1st Dream Rig GAS´, can it? I´ve found a US 4PRO, not too expensive and in great condition and I´m off to pck it up next wednesday! cant wait! So hopefully, in a week´s time, I´ll have three pretty decent rigs: All Valve: Marshall VBA400 and two VBC412´s, (all UK built) Hybrid: Ampeg SVT4PRO and two Ampeg BSE 410HLF´s (all US built) Digital/SS: Ampeg B500DR and Trace Elliot 1524 2x15 (US and UK) Neighbours will be pretty annoyed, but I´m pretty sure I´ll be sorted amp-wise!

Question to Thunderbird players - which strings?
basshead56 replied to Clarky's topic in Bass Guitars
D´Addario XL´s seem to work great on my Thunderbird Studio V. Was looking into HiBeams though too... -
I had a go of a Boner once ... I read somewhere that there was a different set up in terms of electrics on these, though can't remember much more I'm afraid. The colour of that one is quite nice.
Looks a nice bass. Looks pretty damn cheap to me. Dya mind if i ask what a Fender "Mustang" bass is then
Certainly, A Fender Mustang is a shortscale, passive bass, originally from the 60's, this one is a CIJ reissue. They have split coil pickups similat to a Precison bass. Check out the Fender website for more info. Cheers, Colin
The piezo in an Ernie Ball bass is a great addition, as you can see in that video it opens a whole new spectrum of sounds previously unavailable to a normal electric bass, not only that but when used together with the eq it allows you to cut through the muddiest of band mix and adds definition & attack to your sound. Also you will find that with a piezo, you tend to change strings less because if you like a bright sound this will enhance 50% of brightness to an otherwise dull set of strings way past their average life. I'd jump on it, if I were you.
Thanks mate, really appreciated. Grand Wazoo, of the hardware store? "F**k you if you don´t like my hat!"
In the Midnight Hour.
+1 Love that song, but lately prefer the Echo & The Bunneymen version. Only difference is it´s in C I think. Been near the radio with bass in hand (within the last 5 days or so) and figured out: Cherry Lips by Garbage, Give Him A Ball by the Sultans of Ping Genius Of Love by Tom Tom Club Rebellion (Lies) by Arcade Fire You´ve got the love, Florence and the Machine version, The Time Is Now by Moloko, Mind by Talking Heads, Gay Bar by Electric Six edited for spelling I love figuring out a bassline by ear, then going to the tab or sheet and it´s spot on. Great confidence booster that

Been offered a trade locally and would like to know if anyone has any experience? Is it a very versatile bass? What sort of weight are they? I have a SUB, but am selling that. Haven't had much Ray experience, I really am moreof a Precision guy, maybe Jazz at a push. Its a honeyburst finish from what I can tell, rosewood board, pearl pg and MM case. What I dont get is the layout of the control plate. What are all 5 pots for? Is the the input jack on the bottom then? Thanks for any help, Col

Ampeg SVT-II Original - King of valve amps! NOW SOLD
basshead56 replied to molan's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Why does this always happen to me?! Was in Oxfordshire last weekend! Would gladly kill, dismember and bury someone for this! Don´t have cash near asking price, but do have some ´easy to sell basses´ Any chance you´d be interested in my SUB, Fender Mustang (see my ads) and a touch of cash? only snag is I´m in Ireland so that might be something of a problem If not, good luck with the sale mate, Can´t see this hanging around too long, Colin -
Like a ballast, I guess. I've writtenBritish Audio here in the states, so I guess I'll be dealing with it shortly. Thanks dood.
Have dealt with British Audio Service before- they are great!!! Fastest shipping and service from the U.S. I´ve ever experienced. That was when I was fixing up an old Trace combo I had. worked out cheaper too!
