Yeah I remember reading something about then when they came out and someone on the factory floor suggested Sport Utility Bass as a goof, as SUV's were a new phenomenon in the auto industry and causing a commotion over CO2 emissions -basically the category was created to re-classify new bulkier cars as light trucks to meet emissions standards, or summit' like that... I absolutely adore my teal one. it has 'that' Ray sound and I love the neck. I had a red one for a bit around 20ish years ago and I couldn't seem to gel with it. But I know that's cause young, skinny me was all about passive P tone and nowt else! Anyways, if you evergrtthe chance to puck them up reasonably cheap (both of mine were lucky finds at the time), grab one. They are epic!

Well the great swap-out continues. Been on a major Jazz kick since the start of the year. I started off with a Jazz, 25 odd years ago and moved on to Precisions within a year or two.. Aside from the odd Ray or Tbird here and there, it's been mostly P Bass all the way. I did have a lovely 2011 US Standard Jazz with a maple fretboard and absolutely loved the look and feel of it, but there was a big gap where a rosewood board Jazz should have been. I've always preferred rosewood boards on Jazz basses. Not sure why. Look? Sound? maybe both? Earlier this year I picked up a QMT Deluxe Jazz in Amber and a 60th Anniversary RW Jazz in Firemist Silver. Both those instruments are absolutely stellar and they just made me hungry for more. So out went the lovely sunburst and maple Jazz and in came... A beautiful 2020 American Pro II in Mercury. God I love thing!!! The neck is incredible!!! And the finish is glorious. Needs a set of new strings, a setup and I'll probably stick a Hipshot Xtender on it, but yeah, I think this is going to be Numero Uno for a few live projects for a while...

Hi All, Basses are very similar to busses - yes the spelling is similar but also, never one when you want one, then two come at once. Just about to pull the trigger on a beautiful American PRO II Jazz which I've been wanting for ages!!! BUT Out of nowhere pops up a Victor Bailey 4. The seller is selling it with both a fretlees and fretted neck, with all the bits. Only thing is it's not fully stock. It has aftermarket pickups and a Bartolini pre amp - i havent heard it but I dunno if it's gonna be my thing. Would be bought without the ability to try it first sadly as it's at the other end of the country (NZ is harder to get round) Seriously considering this as a project - drop a Sadowsky pre and maybe some Fender Vintage Noiseless pups in it and see how it compares to my Am Deluxe QMT Jazz from the same era (I know they are similar from stock, just different woods). Had a Victor Bailey Acoustic and it was ace but sold it for lack of use. Always been keen on the VB Jazzes, very rarely see them in the wild. Do you think the Sadowsky pre and noiseless pups would work well in a bass like this? Part of me also says just buy both... Well that part of me was louder than the part that said "don't be silly!" Arrived today on the afternoon courier run (despite tracking saying it was ages away and would be a Monday delivery) But yes, behold...😁😁

For me it's either my everyday chapeau or flattie if I'm playing upright or my trusty Cassell's Stout trucker cap (tis truly the best stout in the world - a hard thing to admit as an Irishman) -

I've only ever owned a couple that were on the 'Dream' list. Currently my 04 QMT American Deluxe Jazz in Amber and my Darkray (though I wish it was Starry Night!!!) are at the top end, having been on the wishlist for quite some time (The QMT was a 20yr wait) Still on the Dream list would be: The Jason Newsted Sadowsky I saw the other day A Fiesta Red Fender 83 62 RI Precision as per Kim Deal An Eastwood Rocket Maybe a bullion gold 50th Ann.Thunderbird Oh and maybe another Stingray Special in a cool sparkle finish - something suitably disco! My dreams are a lot less covetous than when I were a nipper... I am in the process of shifting a dream bass I acquired by accident - a 90's Dano DC in Silver Sparkle and my 2011 US Std. Jazz to make way for something that I have been dreaming a lot about lately - An American Professional II Jazz in either Mercury and RW or the FSR Dark Night with RW board

Following with interest, I'm quite keen on these too but have never encountered one in the wild.

Hey guys, Looking at doing a bit of chopping and changing for a side project. Currently ear-marked the Darkglass AO900 head for the starting point. I have an old Behringer 8x10 (4ohms) in a rehearsal room that I barely use but it's in good nick. A friend has also offered me his old Fendsr bassman series 4x10 and 1x15 cabs (I believe both are 8ohm) for cheap. My question is, given that the AO900 runs happily at 2ohms, can the Fwnder cabs be run linked (series or parallel) together to bring their combined load to 4ohms, matching the Behringer's 4ohms and thus bringing it all down to two ohms? I know that on the back of the Fender cabs there is a single Speakon input and then two jack sockets with series/parallel written next to them

Marshall VBA400 - If you ever need to knock a stadium over... Ampeg SVT CL - king of the beasts for just about everything else. Ampeg B100R - closest you can get to vintage Motown magic without breaking your back or your bank managers heart

We've all had those orders! 🤣🤣 Pity I'm so far away, it definitely have that MW Mustang in a heartbeat
-
Those MW sigs are gorgeous! I imagine it sounds glorious. If only they came with a RW board, I'd have one in a heartbeat!!! I'm selling my 90's silver sparkle Dano DC at the moment and will be looking for something similarly 'Disco' to replace it with at some point soon. One of these may be the ticket!

Hey all, Apologies in advance if this has been done to death before... but... Just wanting opinions here as I've not really had a great deal of experience with you-know-what-enbackers. two very similar instruments (as far as I can see) have come up, both ricks, both blue. One is an early 2000's and one is a 1977. Both are in excellent condition overall and both are effectively the same price, giver or take $100. If you could pick, which would you go for and why? Any help appreciated

That is literally what happened to me! I had a copy of the Frontline Catalogue in Autumn 2003 before I moved to uni and I would just stare at the pics of the QMT in there and imagine owning one. Only ever saw one in person before - in Music Maker in Dublin one day when skipping a boring computer class. I got very lucky when this one turned up, had to have it!!!

Couldn't get them all into one due to the floorspace in the jamnasium being chocka with amps but I did manage to get them into two. I've had two of these (at different periods) in my time. Bought relatively cheap and sold relatively cheap. Both were oly white and both were incredibly nice instruments. Only sold the last one when I got a a 78 Precision in the same colour scheme, which weighs the same as a small dwelling. Probably should have kept it anyways. Don't think you will be disappointed if you end up pulling the trigger on it Here's a pic with one from back in the day. Note the presence of hair and the absence of a second chin...

The Jule Simone 500w amp might be a worthwhile contender

I have a 97 American Deluxe P and I adore it!!!! I also have a US Stingray, A US SUB and a US Darkray and I can categorically say that the humbucker in the bridge position on the Am. Deluxre P sounds NOTHING like a Musicman. In theory there is some similarity between the two, but in terms of sound, they are very very different. The P doesn't have that Ray 'Zing' (I call it the gurgle, lol). It is definitely a humbucker and has a wonderful tone all of it's own, just not as hot or throaty as the Ray sound, even with everything boosted. I watched a review of a Meteora recently and it sort of reminded me of the P's bridge pickup -perhaps they are similar units/preamps...? Now that I think of it, I saw the The Breeders play in Christchurch in January and Josephine Wiggs had a Meteora on stage for most of the set (Kim Deal used it on Gigantic to close the set) and it definitely sounded quite similar, not sure if one of the pickups was solo'd or not. It does also sound stunning when blended in with the P pickup to give it a real 'P-on-Steroids' feel, but yeah, totally different vibes. I mainly use passive Fender basses with one band I play in, mostly P's and when I record, I often use the Deluxe (though I may start favoring my newly-acquired 2004 QMT AM DLX Jazz for this soon - we'll see - horses for courses, as they say) to give me a bit more oomph/clarity. I use Rays and my Aria live with a heavier band I play in and find they sit perfectly in the mix for what I need them to do - mostly cranked and clanking through my Darkglass/dUg rig. I've only played Bongos a couple of times and both were 5-strings - not my forte sadly, so can't comment too much on them based on that, other than to say I would happily own a 4 string. The shape is a little 'kooky' for my tastes typically, but there is just something so unique about the look of them. And I am given to understand they are excellent all-rounders, given their controls and tonal versatility etc. I guess it all comes down to use - is the Bongo going to fit the bill better than the Precision Deluxe? Is one going to be a better all-rounder than the other? Is there a particular tone you want to have? etc. etc.

My 40th birthday prezzy to myself a 60th Anniversary Road Worn Jazz in Firemist Silver Visiting family in Ireland and happened upon this on a site. Just back from a 4hr round trip to pick it up and all I can say is... wow. What a beautiful instrument.
