If you've tried both, which do you prefer? Buy that one! I have a '71 Precision, and I've preferred that to a number of 60's Ps I've played over the years. No mine probably isn't 'the best' in terms of era or collectability etc etc, but it's the best sounding and playing I've come across. Date has nothing to do with it, your opinion on which works best for you matters. Si
I'm done with Gibson for now and when my Gothic sells (hint, hint), there'll just be tumbleweed in the Gibson storeroom at Chez Johnson. Yes, I know Neeph is the Gibson King and I'm supposed to be/was King Thunderbird blah blah/whatever, but my smart-money is going on Mike Lull basses from now on. More colours, more options, cough, more money, cough.
If Lull starts doing an SG shape.....I'm in trouble! Si
-
It's not difficult is it, bring out a Thunderbird in some cool finishes (stealth TB anyone), with some modern pickup options. Lull, Dingwall & Sandberg have proven that the shape isn't dead, people still love it. Another SG, long and short scale, with some decent pickup placement. Sure stick with the standard pickup placements as a 'classic' sub-range, but offer some options at least. An SG with Mr Novax' new 'Darkstar' clones in a more typical spacing?!....they'd sell out (I'd buy one anyway haha). Reissue the RD Artist, every post-rock band in the world would buy one. Garnish with some actual colour options and you have a heritage infused bass range to get excited about. Not the committee designed guff that they're coming up with now. Si P.S. I am available for consultation Gibson, I'll likely be cheaper than whoever designed the EB-5 range

It would surprise me if he used any effects, these were African musicians with humble gear. Yeah Bakithi played a POS Washburn fretless, probably through some hired amp in the studio, maybe a B15 if he was super lucky. I seem to remember that Paul Simon is credited with 6 string bass on the record on that tune....whenever I listen to it, I think perhaps that refers to the plucky high notes played with Bakithi's bass part after the bass break....dunno though. But yeah, Washburn Fretless, no effects, hired amp of unknown brand (possibly straight into the desk though for the recording ). The Graceland DVD is his Washburn fretless, but don't recall seeing a specific amp. Si
Very impressive band, very tight with excellent vocals and some tasty bass playing.
Very kind, thanks . We have fun. Si

I play in a covers band that ranges from 60's to modern-day stuff and just use a '71 Precision with flats (or my P/J Lakland with the P solo'd, rounds on that, tone backed off a bit). We don't particularly try to sound like the original band/recording, very much do our own thing arrangement and general 'vibe' wise, so I guess that makes it easy to carve a space for myself. If you're trying to accurately approximate Mark King in the 80's, a Precision won't do it......but we're not interested in being a tribute act, much more interesting doing our own thing with the songs. The Precision sits in the mix beautifully and doesn't thin out when playing up high. A sprinkling of some effects, octave, envelope, overdrive and it's all there. No EQ tweaks at all, only take a second bass in case a string breaks (hasn't happened in 10 years, but you never know). If you're interested in having a listen, bunch of live stuff here, these are my Precision with Chromes, Little Mark II with my Barefaced Super Compact mic'd with an SM57: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEEfKwixZBpOacl2xdsZJcA Si

My band plays all over, happy to travel assuming the budget is there, PM me for a contact if you're interested A bunch of live recorded (plus a few studio recorded) vids here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEEfKwixZBpOacl2xdsZJcA Si

Thanks guys. I knew the 55-01 sounded good out of my amp, and plays brilliantly, but this recorded tone was genuinely very pleasing for me to hear! Si

Save up more and buy a second hand Bongo. If there was an alternative, that would be more popular . Alternatively, any 3 or 4 band active bass with two MM humbuckers will vaguely get you in the ballpark?! Si

Second vote for Orchid Electronics here Si

Justin will always sound like Justin, doesn't matter what he uses. You think he'd pick something that sounded crap? He'll use be whatever is needed. And comparing his produced...even live sound, with multiple rigs and numerous pedals, with a clinic video using a Warwick straight into a practice amp, recorded on the camera mic, is silly and you know it! Si

There's an interview on SBL with Carey where he mentions he had no interest in recreating the Wal pickups, he just wanted to offer his own take on tone to Justin. He's not in competition with the Wal sound, but if he can add something to Justin's armoury, then everyone wins. Si

Played at Hideaway this past weekend for the time, lots of fun. Here's a couple of tunes from that night, particularly happy with my Lakland 55-01 tone, US Bart dual-coils & NTMB pre, through a mic'd Markbass combo: Ain't Your Mama: https://youtu.be/1mQr_DVja9E Mistress: https://youtu.be/seQrjfG8sHY Definitely need headphones or decent speakers for this. It's custom shop so I suspect between 3-5k if you want the same spec. Doubt it will be a production model as it was just 'built for him'. Si
And it's not a filter based preamp - BMT... not going to sound in the slightest bit Wal-like...
I suspect Justin probably doesn't care....it's a free bass! Si

Grounding problem, should get sorted with an electronics overhaul. Quite how it's been back to the the store and the distributor and still has the issue I don't know though, does it not happen at their locations? If it does, and they're not fixing it, they should give you a new bass. If it's not happening at their locations, but at all locations with you.....could be a problem with your cables/amp etc. Si p.s. Just moving this to repair forum
A lovely trio there Si, and six years with the '71? Wow, only seems like yesterday...
Time flies huh! Picked it up from 99ster in May 2011 Si

Thanks, yeah they're decent pair that's for sure! If I ever became really flush (like money to burn situation because the 55-01 is actually really good), I'd probably order a US 55-94 to replace the 55-01, but with soapbar humbuckers.....so essentially a US built 55-01. Si FUN FACT: The 55-01 (and 44-01 obviously) only exist because the factory building the initial run of 44-02 & 55-02 prototypes didn't have the MM+J pickups spec'd by Lakland in stock. So they could still demonstrate the general wood-work and finishing quality etc, they delivered the protos with two soapbar pickups, which Lakland thought were cool, so kept them as the xx-01 models.
Looks like an amazingly versatile set of basses! You might wanna look into the new Justin Meldal-Johnsen signature Mustang...
Suffice to say I won't be spending nearly £1k on a short scale haha. Maybe £500.....if it's really cool, obviously this likely means a used one. I'm in no rush, really I don't have a pressing use for one, but think it would be cool to record on, strung with tape-wounds. Si

I think the values around that period make the assumptions that's all the parts will have differing dates, part of the reason they're not 'collectable'. But as has been mentioned, if you found a good one, that doesn't weigh a ton, good times. Si
On another note how about an Olinto P bass made by Mas Hino, they look the beans
Add another $1000 onto the price and you're just about there I think Si

Custom US 44-94 passive P/J in Shoreline Gold: The rosewood is beautifully dark, with some nice figuring (difficult to capture), but the birdseye maple dots really add something extra IMO: Here it is with my Skyline 55-01, apart from some mild contouring differences, same body size/shape: Cheers Si
