1.
My laptop is my (Linux) software dev environment as well as my audio machine, and other things. I could switch to Mac but it's just as propriety as Windows in the end, even if it is BSD underneath. So for now for me for audio it's Windows 10 + thunderbolt 3. That ruled Clarett out from the off as far as I could tell, no support for my setup. I was hoping that TB3 would be the technology that made things work nicely on both platforms, but it's not looking that way just yet. So was always down to TB2 interfaces with Windows 10 support, which was pretty much UAD or the Quantum. I liked the approach with the quantum of going for low latency and doing everything in the DAW, that's why I bought such a beefy laptop in the first place - best Macbook Pro is about half the speed, they seem to be going for thinner and lighter without updating the spec, and still charging crazy money. It seems to work, I can run more virtual amps and effects than I'll ever need and still get stupidly low latency. Weighs a bit more than a Mac though
Thanks very much, that's interesting to hear, only because Claretts are indeed supported on Windows 10, see here: https://uk.focusrite.com/node/31789 There's some specific info on Windows & Thunderbolt here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/207355215-Clarett-Windows-Compatibility Also interested to hear about the requirement of Thunderbolt 2 specifically, as not many people run the kind of recording setup that requires that kind of bandwidth (please do correct me if I'm wrong in your case), more info here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849269-What-type-of-Thunderbolt-do-the-Clarett-Interfaces-Use- I don't think I'm aware of any TB3 interfaces yet, or any TB/TB2 devices supported (officially or otherwise) over TB3. Whilst TB3 is not a particularly new protocol, the roll-out of USB-C on PCs has been on the slow side I feel. Please don't take this as some aggressive 'oh you should have bought this' technique, far from it, you're obviously more than happy with your interface, and that's all that matters of course. But if I can get the above info about Claretts out there a little more and seen by others who might be on a Google search, then that's a good thing . Cheers for replying though, happy recording! 2. Unfortunately, it sounds like a fault to me. However I would recommend phoning the Tech support team on Monday (or whenever you're next with yoursetup), and they can trouble-shoot with you. If you're only with the setup out of office hours (mon-fri 9:30-6), then there is a live chat option on the website which is available until about 1am UK time. Let me know if you have any issues! 3. The onboard effects are great! Sound really good, especially loved the Ring Mod preset. But I just couldn't get on with the workflow....not because it's bad (although it's fiddly witbout the computer based GUI), but just not what I needed. I didn't purchase the loan unit I had and stuck with my Line6 M5. Si
4.
JV P/J pickups? I am not sure there is such a thing as a JV in P/J configuration. I'd be wary of paying too much for that.
Good spot! Beware!! Unless it's a JV P & a JV Jazz bridge.....but that would be quite odd, someone would have put then together, won't be a stock set. Si
5. TU-2 has a power draw of 55mA, I think I'm right in saying it can also supply 200mA via its power output on the rear (so you can daisy chain other pedals). I've used them for probably 15 years, most recently the TU-3W, and never had any issues with however I power them, nor where in the chain they sit. Compare that with the TC Nano tuner, that really doesn't like being next to a drive pedal, noise when daisy-chained in bypass and when on. Love the TC tuners in general (if they're isolated), but you can't beat the Boss ones for almost every situation! Si
6. Interesting that you went for neck face dots.....you actually use them? Si
7. Depends how you define groove I guess, if you want to tie it down to only beats played by a human (which I'd argue you'll never find specified in any definition of' Groove'), and their various nuances, fine, but you're missing out on a lot. I tend to apply it to anything that gives a sense of relatively consistent rhythm. There are videos on youtube of tractor engines creating great grooves for example. But for those who require to see live musicians and more drum hits to tell whether a song is decent or not, let's try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsnChs_9IDc I simply meant this as a decent example of 'slap' bass in a relatively recent, (very) popular song. It works, it's tasteful. Slap doesn't have to be machine gun 64th notes everywhere....that's just the taste of the player and the given musical context. I don't slap very often at all, I can....not the flashiest in the world....but I've genuinely NEVER been asked on a gig "oh, can you slap that part". Fun to practice, incredibly rare to get used in the musical situations I'm in. Nevermind lol Si
8.
I bet the Drum programmer had many long, sleepless nights, putting that detailed Rhythm track together.
Suits the song perfectly . Lot's of Motown is built over incredibly simple grooves, but we don't slag off Al Jackson Jr Si
9. Welcome to the mainstream: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPvuNsRccVw Si
10. Pickup depends whether you want a 'vintage' P sound or something a little hotter/modern. Original JV pickup will give you the former, the a Dimarzio (I really like the model P) will give you the latter. Take it back to fretted, finish in a 60's Fender custom colour of your preference, job done. Si
11. Purely out of professional curiosity, what sold you on the Presonus over a Focusrite Clarett? Cheers Si
12. 18months after selling my Fodera, it felt like the right time to order something along similar lines. So here we are, first pic..... Alder body Indian Cedar top 3 piece Ash neck Mac Ebony fingerboard I'll leave the rest of the spec a mystery for now, two members are privy to it already, so they can't play Si
13. This and the Ebony headless Krell SC he's building are the ones I'm looking forward to seeing finished the most!! Si
14. Can't wait to see this one develop. I had the original Finn mentioned above from Ewan, however got sold when I was funding my Fodera purchase.....think it went north Wales way. Si
15. Also worth following Andy on Twitter, he often does evenings of myth debunking and fact checking surrounding XTCs past, recordings, who wrote what, fall-outs, make-ups etc. Very interesting Si
16.
Some pic's.... Only one left now if anyone wants it?
Love it! Also only just seen the colour thing. I really like the purple, but really, I don't mind what colour I get, whatever is to hand when you build 'mine' Cheers Si
17. Found this interesting article and thought some people might also find it interesting https://bulletproofmusician.com/why-is-it-so-important-to-record-yourself/ Si
18.
I suppose it depends on your nature. I'm particular about all aspects of the look of my basses as well as the tone.
So what if you found the perfect silk colour but they sounded crap, and the perfect sounding string were the worst coloured silk?! Si
19.
I’ve just become aware of this beast: https://youtu.be/HYj6gPy1va4
I probably wouldn't bother with that until they made it a little bigger! Si

21. Something with a Thunderbolt and USB-C connection will ensure that she fairly well future-proofed for connection with an Interface (which she'll absolutely need). But as mentioned, something fairly modern so she can keep up with Mac OS updates, but yeah, plenty of RAM, no less than 8gb. A larger screen will also help with mixing etc. Si
22. Wish I could make the premier, but am gigging! Good luck with it all Nick, can't wait to see the full film! Si
23. Hi all, With my Focusrite hat thoroughly in place (for sake of transparency), I thought I'd post a series of in-depth articles that we have published relating to considerations when choosing a recording interface. These articles are non-partisan, we're not trying to sell you anything, but full of useful information about what to look out for when considering a new interface. You may even find a cheeky photo of me hidden in there. The article topics cover: - Connection Methods (USB, Thunderbolt, Firewire etc) - Drivers & Latency - Analogue Connections - Digital Considerations - Sound Quality & Specs - Physical Features Each article is also available as an audio file, you'll find the full playlist on the homepage below, and each individual read-through on the relevant article. 24.
Hi. Question about your fx order.... do you ever run your bef filter into your oc2 octaver?
I typically have no use to with this band, but I have done. How come? Si
25.
We both know that's a lie!
Haha, well.....never say never......but I'd genuinely struggle to improve on any of this I think! So unless I change the format/layout etc, I think this is as good as it gets for this size of board. Don't get me wrong, I have other boards for different things that get changed a lot.....but this has been basically constant for at least a year, the only recent change was to put the Sub'n'Up on in place of the Mooer Tender Octaver.
