Will report back Si

For the last 6 years, i've been largely playing my 1971 Precision with flats, probably for 70% of my gigs. That has generally meant that I don't need a lot else, I have call for a 5 string, and a another 4 string for heavier/rockier stuff, and so recently I've found myself for the past year only owning 3 basses.....and weirdly being happy with that. For reference, on average I gig around twice a week. Whilst the P has been a constant, the other two have been a bit transient. Recently I settled on a Lakland Skyline 55-01, swapped out the electronics for US Bart stuff, and am very happy with it for not much money......like.....really good for the money! After not really settling on a second 4 string, with the most recents being Maruszczyk, JV Squier & Lakland Skyline (DJ & 44-64), I've been down to just the '71 P & 55-01 for the last couple of months. I started talking to Lakland, and quickly settled on a simple spec that suited my needs, this is: 44-94 (same body shape as the 55-01) Shoreline Gold Rosewood fingerboard Passive P/J electronics Got the email a couple of days ago that it was ready and had been shipped!! Lakland workshop pics below: I wanted something that was simple and understated (the passive P/J, no scratch plate etc), but with a bit of fun about it (Shoreline Gold), and that's definitly what I've gotten by the looks of it. From what I can tell, this is the only xx-94 body shape with a P/J config that they've made. Someone on Talkbass modded their Double J to a P/J, but that has a pick guard. I actually went for this over a 44-64 simply because I loved the fret access of my 55-01, and after having tested the 44-64 Skyline, the fret access wasn't even as good as my '71 Precision....so it was a no brainer. Should arrive in 10 days or so Si

Have you emailed them? How can a pedal builder justify the time?? Because life doesn't revolve around your pedal, that's why Max specifically provides the following on the SFX website: "Delivery time can vary depending on the type of product. It can be from a few days to weeks. For Custom Shop projects it can be a few months. You can enquiry at any time regarding the status of your order." I had a custom looper from him and it took about 2months I think. Si

I much prefer the layout of the MS-3, with 4 effects or loops available at one time on difference switches. Not a fan of the GT-1Bs patch up/patch down way of working, seems restrictive to me. They're likely to hold the same sounds though I imagine. The GT-1B will be great, and many bassists will buy it for the extra expression (I rarely used the one on my ME-50B other than for solo looping stuff), but the MS-3 has a workflow I like, plus ability to add in other pedals, perfect Si

Just really touching back onto small DI boxes, just came across these guys: http://www.orchid-el...uk/products.htm The Micro looks really interesting to me: http://www.orchid-el...co.uk/micro.htm £25 for the Micro, built in the UK and check this SoS review: http://www.orchid-el...oxes_review.PDF I have no connection to Orchid whatsoever, but think I'm going to get the Micro just to keep in my gig box! Much more attractive prospect than the Mooer or Donner Si p.s. That said, the Micro is just one in and one out.....hmmmmm

I think where the MS-3 will live or die for me (i.e. make me sell my Line6 M5), is whether you can clean mix the overdrives/fuzzes (I assume you can, big omission from the Line6 firmware). Then it's about the strength of the pitch stuff, I've never quite gotten on with Boss' algorithms, had a PS-6 and it just didn't do it for me. The Line6 M series on the other hand probably has the best pitch up and down ability i've ever heard. Looking forward to AB'ing them, should have the MS-3 in a week or two I think. Si

For me, unless you're playing punk or much heavier rock, your P bass will definitely benefit from flats. My covers stuff largely has a pop, motown type feel, so my '71 P has had Chromes (flats) on it for the last 2 years, much better than rounds. No thin d & G strings up high, all notes have a robust sound to them across the neck. Great feel and tension with the Chromes too. That said, I've used a P (or P/J) with my heavier math-rock band, and rounds are more appropriate, so my second 4 string bass (currently being built) will have rounds. My 5 (soapbar humbuckers) has rounds too, could go to flats on that, but undecided on that, i'm mostly a 4 player anyway. Really it's just what's appropriate, ask your band mates what sits better in the mix, listen to live recordings with both etc. Si
Eh? You're getting this built by Lakland? (Aplogies - I'm slow on the uptake today..!)
Haha, no sorry. Just had some fun on the Configurator re-doing my old Maruszczyk (above), just for fun.....although I do miss it, was a fun bass! No I simply meant that the Lakland I have on the way has much of the above spec Si

I think with anything, helps to actually play the thing before you buy. I played some Stingray 5's in my recent quest for a 5 (bought a Lakland if you must know), played one from like 2002 and it was great, played one from 2016 and it left me very underwhelmed. That was partly the setup, but still, sounded boring. That's not to say the build quality wasn't great, but yeah, try before you buy if you're not sure I think. Si

Decided to redesign the Jake Custom I had a little while ago. Changes include a Hipshot bridge, no humbucker at the bridge, no dots, ebony instead of rosewood f/b and lollipop tuners. Plus a 34" scale whereas my previous one was 33". This is essentially the spec I have on the way from Lakland (blasphemy!!! ): Fun! Si

I have an Markbass 801 and it's great, although I just use it for home practice (if not using my 3Leaf headphone amp), or very small rehearsals. I wouldn't gig it really, unless it was a very quiet acoustic gig. As mentioned, no real tonal controls other than the VPF (Variable Reshaped Filter), which is fine for what I need it for. Other than that, it sounds great, as an Aux In, Headphone out etc Not tried the PJ Si

Loving all the BSII love (i'm a Novation employee for the sake of transparency). Unofficially (because it's 3rd party paid content), check out Darrell Freeman's excellent patch-pack aimed at bassists. Obviously these sounds work in other octaves, but my understanding is that Darrell specifically designed the sounds in our octaves www.synthbass.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlbbvTGNw6o Cheers Si

All things being well, I'll have a loaner unit arriving with me in the next couple of weeks, I'll obviously be giving it a few gigs and hopefully do a quick video focused around the Bass effects. At the risk of opening the floodgates, let me know here what you're interesting in knowing about it, and if it hasn't been addressed by Boss in the meantime, I'll be able to give you first hand experience soon! Cheers Si
thanks El jimbob I had done some reading up on resistors, version 2 values changed from 27k to 26k and 4k7 to 4k6 i'm sure there's a logical explanation for having 4 and 5 band codes, just completely befuddled me for anyone in a similar situation this would be useful https://www.digikey....lor-code-4-band ultra tester complete just need to work out how to use it
There's not really a logical reason for this, just a different system/standard for determining the value of that resistor. In my experience, blue resistors will be metal film, with brown resistors being carbon film with the only real differences being their tolerances (or variation in value) I think, metal tends to be around 1% and carbon around 5%.
A commendable sentiment. I was making reference to her talent though.
Her talent is undeniable....how she uses that talent is of course subjective. I thought she over sang Somewhere Over The Rainbow, but really who cares given the context. She's young, she'll grow into her voice. I think the only part of the show I really cringed at were Katie Perry and Beiber talking to the crowd, very american, but whatever, musically I think the show was on point. And sounded good too, as has been mentioned. Si Si
PM replied. Basically: Moses jazz necks are rubbish in my experience. The Status ones are superby made and super stiff. This stiffness can mean brittleness if mated to an ash body - better to use softer wood like alder or mahogany and specify a wood fingerboard to dampen further. You could always reverse headstock a Status neck. Modulus necks aren't available atm although there are rumours that Modulus will return soon under new ownership. Another option (as suggested above) is to ask John Shuker to build you a jazz neck. However you can ask him to carbon wrap it and put a richlite (phenolic) fingerboard on. It'll have all the advantages of a full composite neck, look like a composite neck but have none of the risks of harshness because it's got that little bit of dampening with the cedar core.
This.....it will cost you, but get Jon to build a carbon wrapped next for you. Or have a Status neck with a reverse headstock. Si

I thought Imogen Heap was amazing! No she's not the best singer in the world, but amazing songs, amazing feel, beautiful delivery. Yeah Eric Ingram is a bit of a good player! Helps to have Aaron Spears on drums too! Si

These are a couple I had fun with, a modern 4 and a trad 5.....didn't make a note of the prices though: Si
Cuzzie has reminded me of the Trace Elliot Elf which is a tiny 600cc and delivers 200W at 4ohms. https://www.thomann....OFIsaAg7K8P8HAQ So we may already be closer to this nirvana tiny power amp pedal than we think! Be interesting to see if anyone has played one in terms of sound quality etc? But it shouldn't be beyond the wit of man, with ever improving power to size ratio of chip-sets to shrink this bit further to deliver something truly pedal board friendly (and also looks great), right? 18 months tops before these things start becoming widely available is my guess.
Yeah the Elf is the closest thing to what you want I think at the moment, although there is another thread where a member is having some real issues getting their pre-ordered Elf. It was announced at NAMM (Jan 2017), preorders taken just after that, and now availability is being touted as end of July, having been pushed back on each subsequent date set. By all accounts it sounds fine, just depends whether they actually manage to get it out or not lol. I'm not sure I'd say the Q45 is "significantly smaller" than a Boss pedal, the Q45 looks to be a 1590B size (MXR) which is a few MM smaller than a Boss pedal. Anyway, I'm picking hairs . I guess one day we will get super mega small amps for not much money......but it will always be the same.....someone will talk about 'valve amp heft' Anyway, this is off topic, continue about DHA. I imagine that if you're looking for a more commercial path (dealers etc), then tidying up the artwork (I was a fan but others may see it as too 'homemade') and focussing each pedal is a great start. Obviously each original DHA pedal had a lot of functionality and a lot of options. Strip those ideas back to say 3 or 4 pedals that all have specific functions, 3 or 4 controls perhaps. A drive pedal, a DI pedal with EQ & drive, a headphone amp etc etc (just as examples). Keeps it easy to digest. Then if someone wants something extra, a control added here, a switch added there, original splatter artwork....you can offer that as a 'custom shop' option just through you. It's a model a lot of builders employ. Just my 2 pence Si Cheers Si
Or a 200w all tube head??!!
A 200w tube head would be the size of a standard big 'ol tube amp, it's the power tubes that restrict the size capabilities. Why do you think people went solid state? As it is a 150w tube amp is massive and heavy, adding another 50w in tube terms would make it even bigger and heavier.
Speaking of mini...what chance any manufacturer producing a 200W+ pedal board power amp? Something this sized, but geared to bass players: http://www.quilterla...e/microblock-45 I suspect this would create a storm!
Bear in mind that's a 45watt transistor based 'amp'.....start adding more power (and therefore size) and you're into the territory of micro heads. Save yourself the R&D and the wait and just buy something like this: http://www.markbass..../nano-mark-300/ If it makes you feel better, mount it on your pedalboard Si
