As others say, there are differences - sometimes subtle, sometimes rather more noticeable. It will of course, depend on what you perceive as "better" too. Here's a link to a video comparing a Squier Classic Vibe P bass, with a 70's Fender P https://www.youtube....h?v=-BBsRugtw6I There's another batch of videos somewhere on youtube, where players were blindfolded and asked to choose between a Squier CV, a US Fender and a Custom Shop US Fender. Mostly, players thought the Squier was either the US or Custom....
I can absolutely tell the difference between the Squire and the '75 here. Is one better than the other? No, they're simply different, the '75 had a bit more depth, bit more low end to my ears. Is someone going to hear the difference at a gig....through a PA....behind a band? Probably not. Really it depends which plays best in your hands. Those Classic Vibes are generally fantastic though. Si

Out of interest, how do you find the neck-heel? I always thought it looks quite restrictive, big 'ol 'speedbump' for your thumb at somewhere around the 12th-14th fret? Looks great though! Cheers Si

I'd also give another vote for a Lakland Skyline Bob Glaub (also known as the 44-64). Skylines vary in weight a little more than their US built counterparts, but find a good one and they're excellent! I have two (a DJ4 & and 55-01), and very impressed with them. The Bass Gallery currently has a 44-64 Skyline in stock I think, as does Guitar Guitar in a few of its stores. Si

I've had a Guma-drive arrive too, don't know when I'll get a chance to build it though....rainy day project Si

These guys also do some nice stuff, similar to Limelight I think, but some interesting options like chambered bodies etc. Scott Devine has a Precision of theirs I believe: http://www.rocknrollrelics.net/project/vicious-model Si
Your '71 may well be a B - The B became standard in '73 (IIRC) but B necks would have been available before then..
I see what you mean, makes sense Si
-
Interested in the dates you cited earlier, my '71 Precision definitely has a B neck as opposed to a C. In any case, it's not quite a 'cheap' alternative, but the '63 American Vintage fits the bill (if you're looking for it to 'be a Fender'), plus likely to be quite similar to your '64: http://shop.fender.c...-basses&start=1 If not, another vote for an appropriately spec'd JV Squier Si

It's a great place to start, or take a look at the Fuzzdog kit offerings, there's a LOT on there, but each kit has a full walkthrough etc. Their Muff gives you all the options to build whatever era of Muff you want (it's just component changes really), although I'd stick with a Green Muff if it's for bass: http://shop.pedalparts.co.uk/Big_Muff_Pi/p847124_6674585.aspx The thing with DIY stuff is that you can build something, and then be like "oh what if I add cheeky clean blend....and some oscillation....and a mids control", there's a LOT of mods for a muff. I'd say for the music you're citing, a straight green muff will be fine though....you can always build more Si
Has anyone attempted one of these big muff kits? https://www.musikdin...-Distortion-kit wondering what it sounds like and how difficult it was to construct?
They say it's a Green Muff, so I would assume it sounds approximately like the old EHX Green Tall Font Muffs. There's nothing particularly difficult about a Muff build, but they have a relatively high component count (compared to something like a Fuzz Face), so if a longer build = a little more difficult......then perhaps a 'medium' difficulty?! Really depends on how at home you are with a soldering iron and small fiddly parts. I've not built one of these, but I have built a GGG (General Guitar Gadgets) Green Muff and it sounds great. Largely these DIY kits are just their own PCB layout, but using the same old schematic and component values that everyone else uses, so unless others are modding theirs during the build phase (quite normal to use different values to get different sounds), they'll all sound much of a much.
Oh god!! I love that fuzz!!! Is it similar to a mastatron/wooley Mammoth?
Not quite, the Tarkin is Muff based whereas the Mastotron/Mammoth are not, so a gate is probably going to effect them differently......plus I'm guessing the type of gate used has an effect to, I'm not sure what design Tom uses, if not his own. It's pretty chilled out, so just cleans it up nicely if you want, it's not a hard gate like, say, the Rainger Dwarf Bass I did a video for recently. That's a mega hard gate and can sound quite synthy as a result, which is great, but not what I need on this board. Si
I know this is a dumb question but as I have never seen one of these in the flesh or in a shop I have no idea how to pronounce Maruszcyzk. I'd like to be enlightened.
Maroosh-chick Or thereabouts Si

Swapped a couple of bits around on my main board. Swapped the tuner and Chorus around so I could have modulation after Octave. More significantly I swapped out my COG Knightfall for a COG custom gated Tarkin fuzz. Lovely stuff: Chain is: DIY bypass looper -> Boss TU-3W -> Mooer Tender Octaver -> COG custom Tarkin -> MXR BEF -> Boss OC-2 -> MXR Bass Chorus -> DIY Bypass looper. Powered by Diago with help from The Gigrig to isolate the digital Mooer Si

Define 'national'?! Plenty of people travel a little distance to 'local' bashes There used to be a 'UK Bass Day' in Manchester, however I think it's essentially been superseded by the London Bass Guitar Show (which has just happened). Other than that, absolutely, support your local bashes, and build yourself up to the next London show March 2018, lots of BCers go and BC usually have a stall of some description. Si
Thanks Sibob - how did you know that?? - Steve did tell me at the time that it was Joe White. I don't have a receipt for the work but happy to take more close up photos of the finish that anyone would like to see.
I got to the point of going over to Sixshooters house to try it out, and he was talking about the process of refinishing it with Joe, was really interesting. Apparently many of the marks, scratches, blemishes etc were still present when it was taken back to natural, so he refinished the sunburst around them essentially. So what you have, for the most-part, is a refinished bass, but the relic'ing is kind of as original as it can be I left his to mull it over, and got cold feet over the price.....silly, should have had it when I had less commitments haha. May well take you up on your offer if I can get to Wimbledon some time soon Si
-
Yeah, Fuzzrocious Afterlife & Mr Black Eterna, love these two pedals!! Si
-
Oh man, I nearly bought this from Sixshooter back when it was for sale the first time. Things transpired against me and it was always 'the Precision that got away', to the point where I was talking about it the other day haha. Absolutely gutted that I can't go for it now (buying a house, so no way around it), will have to make do with my '71 P.....which is amazing, but still GLWTS......I'd quite like to know who takes it, you know, in case things change in the future, keep track of it etc Si P.s. Regarding the refinish, I'm sure it was Joe White who did it: www.jwhite-guitarworkshops.co.uk

Anyone know of any artists or builders who are doing cool etched enclosures in the UK? Si
Prices for three of the leading contenders on my shortlist: MXR M288 (Bass Octave Deluxe) (£159); EBS Octabass SE - analogue (£125); TC Sub n Up (£109). Would love to hear an A/B of these three along the lines that Si did for the OC2 and T16 with a looped track? (Btw - really good YouTube clip, thanks Si). I think the OC 2 has (sadly) been discontinued.
Glad you enjoyed it bud Yeah the OC-2 has been discontinued for a long time, replaced by the, IMO not half as good, OC-3. So for those interested, it's a used one (I had 9 at one point lol, just 4 now). I also live in hope they'll do a Wazacraft OC-2 Si
-
Well, what exactly are you trying to achieve? What's the music you're playing? What is it about your standard tone you're not happy with? Etc etc Si
Sibob, is the pedal true-bypass? In the pics of the kits they show a DPDT footswitch and not a 3PDT. I'm aware that they may have a millenium bypass in the circuit, hope you can confirm this to me. True-bypass is a must-have for me as i run my pedalboard with a PSU and is part of my signal chain. Cheers
Yeah it's true bypass.....well, in as much as you still get a clean bypass signal with no power to the pedal. Si

From Darkglass' website/FAQ: I HAVE A B7K, A POWER AMP AND A CABINET. CAN I USE THE B7K AS A PREAMP? Yes! The output volume will depend of the sensitivity of the power amp but we have tried the B7K on different powers and it work very well. You can also try the Vintage deluxe, the B7K ultra and the Vintage Deluxe Ultra. Si

As with many threads, all you're going to get is what amp a particular member likes, be it through a Super Compact or otherwise. You're just going to be best to look in the amp for sale ads and do some experimenting with used gear (so often not loosing much money when flipping them). Me? I love my Markbass Little Mark 2 & Little Mark 800 (not the tube one) through my Super Compact & G2 Midget......simply as that, that combo really works for me with passive Precision, Jazz and an active 5 string. Si

The Bass Whammy does sound good, although unless you particularly need all the harmony and whammy ability, then it is a massive footprint for a simply octave up. The Line6 M range octave sound (pitch glide) is excellent, would fully agree with that, and yeah, an M5 can be found pretty cheap used. But again, if you literally just want it for an octave up sound, it's a big footprint. Si
