Saying pop simply means 'popular' (it's historical meaning I guess), completely invalidates the initial suggestion. There are SOOOOOO many bands/musicians as good as Level 42 technically (being the the example here) who also have good songs and are popular in their field. If you think there aren't, then you genuinely aren't looking hard enough and you should stop talking about it . If you're talking about Pop (capital P) as a genre then it's all about cycles isn't it, that said, it's all out the window now anyway. When Level 42 were in their heyday, you got in the charts by selling records, and people would only hear those records if you were on the radio or TV. Now it's also download sales and you can hear those songs via any thousands of methods on the internet. So comparing like-for-like is pointless. Sometimes they converge (i.e. major label money with actual good musicians), but not often, usually just individual artists who they think will sell a lot of units. Take Maroon 5 for example, they're all excellent musicians.....like really really good! But they write 'Pop' music, just because there's no slap bass or chorus effect on it....doesn't mean it's not as valid as Level 42 Si

Really like my Guma Antique, sounds great. I'm imagining the Guma Drive has a bit more top-end content, which might be helpful in some instances. As above, I imagine they stack well together. My Guma Drive is still sitting in my bits box ready to build.....rainy day project Cheers Si

If you've tried both, which do you prefer? Buy that one! I have a '71 Precision, and I've preferred that to a number of 60's Ps I've played over the years. No mine probably isn't 'the best' in terms of era or collectability etc etc, but it's the best sounding and playing I've come across. Date has nothing to do with it, your opinion on which works best for you matters. Si

It's not difficult is it, bring out a Thunderbird in some cool finishes (stealth TB anyone), with some modern pickup options. Lull, Dingwall & Sandberg have proven that the shape isn't dead, people still love it. Another SG, long and short scale, with some decent pickup placement. Sure stick with the standard pickup placements as a 'classic' sub-range, but offer some options at least. An SG with Mr Novax' new 'Darkstar' clones in a more typical spacing?!....they'd sell out (I'd buy one anyway haha). Reissue the RD Artist, every post-rock band in the world would buy one. Garnish with some actual colour options and you have a heritage infused bass range to get excited about. Not the committee designed guff that they're coming up with now. Si P.S. It would surprise me if he used any effects, these were African musicians with humble gear. Yeah Bakithi played a POS Washburn fretless, probably through some hired amp in the studio, maybe a B15 if he was super lucky. I seem to remember that Paul Simon is credited with 6 string bass on the record on that tune....whenever I listen to it, I think perhaps that refers to the plucky high notes played with Bakithi's bass part after the bass break....dunno though. But yeah, Washburn Fretless, no effects, hired amp of unknown brand (possibly straight into the desk though for the recording ). The Graceland DVD is his Washburn fretless, but don't recall seeing a specific amp. Si

I play in a covers band that ranges from 60's to modern-day stuff and just use a '71 Precision with flats (or my P/J Lakland with the P solo'd, rounds on that, tone backed off a bit). We don't particularly try to sound like the original band/recording, very much do our own thing arrangement and general 'vibe' wise, so I guess that makes it easy to carve a space for myself. If you're trying to accurately approximate Mark King in the 80's, a Precision won't do it......but we're not interested in being a tribute act, much more interesting doing our own thing with the songs. The Precision sits in the mix beautifully and doesn't thin out when playing up high. A sprinkling of some effects, octave, envelope, overdrive and it's all there. No EQ tweaks at all, only take a second bass in case a string breaks (hasn't happened in 10 years, but you never know). Save up more and buy a second hand Bongo. If there was an alternative, that would be more popular . Alternatively, any 3 or 4 band active bass with two MM humbuckers will vaguely get you in the ballpark?! Si

Justin will always sound like Justin, doesn't matter what he uses. You think he'd pick something that sounded crap? He'll use be whatever is needed. And comparing his produced...even live sound, with multiple rigs and numerous pedals, with a clinic video using a Warwick straight into a practice amp, recorded on the camera mic, is silly and you know it! There's an interview on SBL with Carey where he mentions he had no interest in recreating the Wal pickups, he just wanted to offer his own take on tone to Justin. He's not in competition with the Wal sound, but if he can add something to Justin's armoury, then everyone wins. Si

Grounding problem, should get sorted with an electronics overhaul. Quite how it's been back to the the store and the distributor and still has the issue I don't know though, does it not happen at their locations? If it does, and they're not fixing it, they should give you a new bass. If it's not happening at their locations, but at all locations with you.....could be a problem with your cables/amp etc. Si p.s. Just moving this to repair forum
