Bartolini MK-1 Pickups & Preamp Vs Bartolini USA Pickups & Preamp
Sibob replied to Sibob's topic in Accessories and Misc
Nice, Simon! Things I did notice:

the difference between passive and active MK1's is more noticeable than the difference between active/passive Barts
the MK1's are not highly regarded (on TB), but they sound like fine single coils to me
the Barts are not better, but different. Warmer, growly indeed
I also own a (stock) Lakland 55-01. And I like the Barts a lot. Not sure if I am convinced enough to invest a large sum of money.
I agree with a lot of this, my feelings are that the USA passive sound is (IMO) a lot better than the MK-1 passive sound, but the active is sound is just different (and preferable to me). The stock MK-1s are actually split coils as opposed to true single coils, but the USA Barts in my case are Dual Coils, so undoubtably some of the sound difference is that. Si -
Getting rid of some excess instruments this week, I guess another Jake might be in order in the near future. There's one I want to base it off on the website, what's Adrian's stock necks like? Might not have to go for a customish build as this one looks perfect.
My custom Jake just had the standard neck dimensions and it was very comfortable, fairly shallow for a Precision neck, but not too shallow lol. Just very nice Si

Sold a pedal to Jordi with no issues, very nice guy, quick payment etc. Cheer Si
they all seem to say 'pre-order - delivery in 8-10 weeks', so it sounds like a more expensive method of ordering directly from Ryan, unless I'm missing something?
I just spoke to Ryan and he's just wrapping up their order currently. So the pedals will ship to Andertons soon and be available directly from them. The 'pre-order' is simply because they wanted the pedals listed asap I imagine. Si

Looks like Andertons did the right thing at NAMM at ordered a big 'ol bunch of Fuzzrocious, all (apart from Ram The Manparts & Feed Me) are hand-painted as opposed to screen-printed....which is awesome little bonus on these shores: https://www.andertons.co.uk/c/8/guitar-pedals-effects?p=1&q=8&v=0&me=_Brand&f=Brand:Fuzzrocious-Pedals&x=Brand Si

Recently I purchased a Lakland 55-01, which has been fantastic. Obviously the stock pickups (split coils) and preamp are the 'budget' Bartolini MK-1 range, gigged the bass a few times, sounds fine, perfectly useable. However, I had the means to easily swap out the pickups for Bartolini USA Dual Coils (Elrick spec) and the NTMB preamp. Before I made the change, I recorded a number of very basic drum and bass tracks for the MK-1s, and then the proper Barts when installed. Below is a link that lets you download 200mb of wavs to have a listen for yourselves. In the main folder is wavs for each setting including the drum track. However there is also a folder labeled 'DAW', if you have Logic, Cubase or similar, you can use the Wavs in this folder (which do not include the drum track) to drag into a session. The drum track is also included as a wav in the DAW folder to drag into the session. This way you can simply mute and solo tracks within the DAW as you want, to easier hear comparisons. All EQ was set flat, so we're just comparing both pickups, neck solo'd, bridge solo, and then the same again in passive mode. It would have been too long to then start comparing EQ points etc. https://sync.focusri...vjMhIO/download Hope it's of interest. If you're wondering, I'm glad I made the change, I think the USA Barts have more character, are warmer and sound more musical. Si

Hi all, SOLD Selling my Diago pedalboard as I am downsizing. This is the Showman board, and so the middle sized board in their hardcase range. Mine is used, gigged, but perfectly functioning (i.e. handle and all latches working perfectly), there are just some marks over the case as you'd expect. Inside, it could do with a tidy, just dust and gig much really (which I'll try with some tape) and the felt in the corners may want gluing down again soon, but fine at the moment. There's a small lump taken out of the lids foam, most likely by a pedals footswitch (pictured) Collection only from the following areas: Hatfield (Herts), High Wycombe (Bucks) or perhaps London Cheers Si

SOLD Not entirely sure about this, but have seen another 4 string Jazz that I'm pretty interested in, and it's one in one out Here we have an '83 Squire JV Jazz, it's all original, however I've replaced the 60's style JV bridge with a Hipshot Kickass bridge for gigging stability. This can remain with the bass and of course the original bridge will be included. If you don't want the Kickass, happy to knock £40 off the price. I have removed the scratch plate as I preferred the look, obviously this is included as well. Some of these photos below are from the owner I purchased from (so shows scratch plate & original bridge), then pics I've taken which are with the Kickass bridge and no scratchplate. The bass will come with a basic Fender gig bag. It's in good condition for it's age, some marks obviously, but of note, an indentation on the neck (pictured below) and what looks to be a cigarette burn on the headstock. SOLD Collection only from Hatfield (Herts), High Wycombe (Bucks), London areas. Si

Hi all, JoCee's debut album is out today after 9 months of writing, recording, mixing in amongst normal life. I’ve been with her since the band was a quartet (live it’s now 8-10 members usually), so very much feels like ‘my’ album as well, bit of a journey. It also means a lot as we started tracking about 2 weeks after my little boy was born, fantastic timing as usual Finn. The whole album is my 1971 Precision with D'addario Chromes recorded by me remotely into a Focusrite Clarett 2Pre. I did nothing to the bass tracks before I sent them to the guitarist (who produced/mixed), where he added some compression and EQ'd it to sit with the kick on each track. Anyway, its on all digital platforms, streaming services etc, and Vinyl preorders are here: http://www.joceesmusic.com/shop We have an album launch gig tonight (14th Feb - Valentines) at Ronnie Scotts Bar (the upstairs venue), where we’re piggy-backing the ‘Ruby Sings’ night to play some tunes from the album. So if you’re around that area, pop in. Cheers Si

Bartolini MK-1 Pickups & Preamp SOLD

SOLD Just replaced all of the guts in my Lakland 55-01, so i have a spare set of Bart MK-1 soapbars and the MK-1 3band Preamp. £60 for everything including shipping. Please note that I do not have a wiring diagram, so whilst 90% of it is pre-wired, I had to cut some grounds and obviously disconnect the pickups from the Pre. So you'll either need some decent electronics knowledge to know what goes where, find a wiring diagram for yourself (Bartolini might be able to help), or take to a tech obviously. Everything is included, pickups, preamp, pots, input jack etc. Can take photos if you like, but not much to see. Cheers Si SOLD
Si - any thoughts / opinions on the afterlife (how it sounds with dirt, how usable the feedback is in a band setting, that sort of thing) - I'm quite tempted!
Effectively Afterlife is a great sounding, relatively subtle reverb that you can send into oscillation using the momentary second switch. What's nice is that you can set the volume of the oscillation and you obviously have your direct signal there too, so you can use it as a drone to play over, or set the oscillation volume to max and just insert some chaos Not the best example of the Afterlife itself (although the Reverb remains on after I loop the oscillation), but I did a video of it with a MOTH and Dwarfcraft Great Destroyer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpNZ921ESFY Si

Love that Lakland! Si

I wouldn't necessarily say don't go custom.....but I do agree you're more likely to find something you really love if you can try it first. But that then comes back to making a list of what you like and what you don't like about yours, for example if you absolutely love the neck on your bass, if you have a custom and the luthier is UK based, there would be no issue in them measuring your Yamahas neck and cloning that on the custom build. So yeah......there's pros and cons (or perhaps pros and more pros depending on your outlook) for both ways Si
-
Yes, he fixed my DL-4 and was great. Highly recommended! Si

Personally there's not a lot to say about it I don't think, otherwise it's just a whole thread of "try this bass....try that bass because I like it". If you go down the 'off the shelf high-end' route, take your bass along to Bass Direct, Bass Gallery and/or Manchester Bass Lounge and try a LOT of stuff in comparison to yours. Even if they're a bit of a trip, they're all treasure troves, so worth it. If you go down the custom route, you have to ensure that the resulting bass will be as good as, if not better (hopefully better), than what you're playing now, otherwise it's a waste. Make a list of what you do like about your bass, and what you don't (and be critical). With any new bass comes some bedding in, especially after playing the same thing for 10years, but if you try for something that encompasses the things you do like, and fixes the things you don't, then getting used to it shouldn't take too long. Quite frankly, you may just find that you go with a really high-end Yamaha.....keep it in the family and all that. Enjoy Si

Did another buy.....just because I wanted to use it with the Afterlife after the fun I had with that combo at NAMM: Si
