I owned a 44-02 Deluxe years ago, nice bass but a bit fancy for me (cherryburst quilted maple top), really boring grain maple fingerboard. Sounded nice, but there was a real volume/output difference between the humbuckers and the Jazz pickup, which you're expect, so I'm not really fussed about that config. Si
This is the perfect base (pun intended) for a couple or Nordstrand PUs ..... since you mentioned them:) Big Singles in my book.
If I went down this route (haven't gigged the stock Barts yet), then I would go Big Stacks or their full humbuckers.....I have a cool Jazz bass already . I'd also probably explore the Pope Flexcore preamp too, loved the Pre in my Fodera! Si

When I asked the builder at Fender Custom who made them for Flea if there were plans for a production model, he said he wasn't aware of any. They're a way more interesting prospect than the Jazz they released.....but might take a LOT of noise from fans to get a production model Si
why on earth would you let an Xotic go you crazy fool. Imo one of the best 5 string Jazz basses ever made
Simply because at the moment (whilst buying a house), I couldn't justify having £2k wrapped up in a bass that didn't get used as much as my Precision . As you mention though, probably best 'Super Jazzes' around, up there with Sadowsky. Would certainly own another!! Si
I have been thinking about getting a 5 string next year. My choice would be an Xotic or a full fat Lakland (if I could afford it) but as it probably won’t be my main instrument I am a little wary of spending that much money, so I may well get a s/h SR5 instead.
This is exactly me. Had an Xotic, lovely bass, would have kept it. But a 5er is second to my Precision for most gigs, plus buying a house, so wanted a cheaper 5 and free up some cash from the Xotic. I was all set to have fun searching for a used SR5, but with struggling to find the spec I want, at the price I want, with a new baby and new house stuff....I got bored quickly with shopping around used sites etc. So today I purchased a 55-01 from The Gallery . NBD thread up a little later! Si

Yeah never heard of that model (not that I'm a Lakland connoisseur), but looks great! Si
Tom Barney and Gail Dorsey, both great players, moved on from MM to MTD basses. Just sayin'.
I think Gail goes between her MTDs & MMs fairly frequently. But yes, I'll only Guy a 55-01 if it sounds good, but realistically, because I'm restricted to used SR5s because of my budget, there's elements of compromising the spec I want. Trying a couple of 55-01s today so we'll see how that goes Si
I love Stingrays and EBMM basses....in other people's hands. I just can't get on with the sound myself. The ergonomics and string spacing...fantastic Lakland 5ers have huuuuge necks and wide string spacing. Great sound. But not for me ergonomically.
I've never really had any issues getting used to various different string spacings. I've had Fender 5s with 19mm spacings (like the Lakland), and my Fodera was a 17.5mm spacing (albeit quite light guage strings). I liked the Fodera for speed and economy of movement, but for feel similarities to a 4 string (which are 19mm 99% of the time), I do quite like 18-19mm 5ers. Si
You have answered your own question, the 55-01 hasn't got any humbuckers, they are soapbars. I really like the 55-02, sounds like you need to go and try a few out in a shop?
Lol, well they're split coils, which are a type of humbucker. Could always drop some Nordys in there too Si

A continuation from my status. So I am currently down to two 4 string basses, my 1971 Precision and 1983 Squier JV Jazz. I'm looking for a new 5 string with a maximum budget of £1K, although would like to try and spend a little less. Previously I've had it in my head I should get a Musicman (Sterling preferably, but Stingray probably), however my budget, seeing as I'm not interested in Subs/Ray35s etc, mean I'm restricted to used ones. However, recently the Lakland 55-01 has come onto my radar. Understated, fairly trad looking, solid. Specially like the vintage creme colour they have now. So, anyone own both? Thoughts? Opinions? I don't really have a Stingray sound in my head, just want a 5 that sits well in a mix, and can do thick/round to growly tones. My spec preferences are: Rosewood fingerboard (or rather, no maple) 1 or 2 humbuckers Not toooo heavy I've tried some Stingray 5s with varying degrees of success, ranging from "wow that's crap" to "really enjoy this". Think I tried a sunburst 55-01 in the gallery a little while ago and it was great. Things I'm not interested in: G&L Sandberg Clover Warwick Maruszczyk Fender Anyway, over to you Si
Trawling through and saw this. I used to wave at Brightlingsea folk. Mersea boy. I'm thinking that suitably set up the Knightfall with do subtle warmth/a hint of grit but that the Tarkin won't?? Peter
Haha, small world In my experience, OD/Distortion can be wound back for that slight grind/hair vibe. But Fuzz only really sounds good full tilt IMO. Si
Ace that is!!
I had a quick blast of it last night, it's really cool! I think I'm going to use it as a soloing tone, with the the second footswitch as some momentary weirdness! It can obviously go into fully strange, self-oscillation too which is also great fun. Si

Relative positions of the MM pickup in MusicMan basses
Sibob replied to Dood's topic in Bass Guitars
I thought I heard that the Stingray 5H humbucker position was slightly different to the 4 string?! That was a long time ago though, could be wrong. Si -
So my new Anomalies turned up. Stock over Kid-Paint: Si

Where to try a USA MM Sterling in the uk, what's the neck like?
GAK have a natural one in stock now at a really low price compared to normal
Oh man, if that were a 5, it would be on its way to me. Si -

I've been looking into this at the moment too, albeit with 5string Musicman basses. I emailed Strings & Things (who were very helpful), but they mentioned that they had no stock of Sterling 5s in the U.K. I was invited to order one, but thenorder would take 5-6months potentially. They weren't able to let me know if there were any dealers with stock (Google suggests there isn't). I've got a couple of friends with Sterling 5s, but with them and I being busy players, we're like ships in the night. This means I'll likely go for a Stingray 5, which propagates this 'very few Sterlings' in the U.K. thing. Cheers Si -
Hé doesn't answer ....
This is highly unlikely, sure your email got to him? Tried other means like Facebook etc? In other news, have a little something something on the way from Tom (again) Si

I recorded my PH-3 on a Corybantic tune today. Sounded awesome! Will post the track when it's mixed & mastered etc Si

For a while I used an old Ibanez PH-5, sounded fantastic! Really liked it! I swapped it out for a Boss PH-3 because I just needed something a little more extreme, which it does, but it doesn't sound quite as good as the PH-5 at more 'normal' settings. Si

Hi all, Akai Headrush E2 Delay/Echo/Looper - Commonly used as a phrase looper pedal, but extremely underrated as an Echo & Delay. Multiple echo 'head' outs. 8/10 condition. Boxed (Box 6/10 condition). SOLD No trades thanks, other than a Boss RC-30 looper (and ONLY the RC-30) which I can add money to appropriately. Velcro on bottom. Postage is £3 Cheers Si

Ernie Ball - Nice new SR 5 30th, more Old Smoothies, great new colours!!!
Sibob replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
The sonic blue Ray 5HH is very cool, definitely my choice, closely followed by the 30th Anniversary! Si -
I'll almost certainly be there, even if there's evening gigs to play . Great hang! Si

So a refinish (assuming it's just a body refine) should command around half of the full market value. If it's a neck and headstock refin as well, even less. So an £8k 1963 is pretty top money for an all original, I would certainly expect a refin with non-original pickup to go for closer to £3k, maybe even late 2ks if there's other stuff missing. If you want a cool (but expensive project), then get the '63, then find and buy the period correct parts over the coming years, you might end up spending £800 on a pickup, but it will eventually give you an all original '63 (minus the finish of course), you'll certainly learn a lot about vintage Fenders along the way. However, if it doesn't sound or feel perfect for you now, and a relic does, then get the bass that is going to inspire you to play and make you and the band sound the best it can! Si
