1. I'm almost at the point where a high-end boutique bass doesn't look right to me unless it's singlecut lol. There are some exceptions, but I do love 'em Si
2. You cannot copyright a schematic, only layout of the PCB. I could release a B3K 100% schem clone tomorrow and I would have no legal questions to answer if I'd redesigned the PCB layout. Si
3.
Yep - my own fault. I thought a maple board would be nice alternative, but it turns out I'm dyed-in-the-wool rosewood. Adrian won't send me a neck 'cos they're carefully matched to the bodies, so... here I am. As soon as it sells, my order is going in for another.
I know how you feel, I've flirted with Maple a few times, but it always comes back to Rosewood or similar species, I do like ebony too. Si
4. How about a little update to finish the year L-R: 1971 Fender Precision (34") Maruszczyk Jake custom (33") Fodera Matt Garrison Standard (33") Fender Japan Jazz (32") Si
5.
I find the flat board on my ACG slows me down a bit over the slightly curved one on the ibanez. if I specced one today, it would be rounded.
Interested to know why you think/feel the flat board slows you down? Cheers Si
6. They're both quite different pedals from one another, but both very well thought of! I think you'll probably do yourself more favour a by getting hold of them and trying for yourself! Si
7. So mine arrived today in case that wasn't obvious . I can post a photo tomorrow, however the picture above from Adrian can't really be beaten! After an evening with it at home, my instant thoughts are: - It's light! (7.3lbs) due to the chambered body (costed extra) - Beautiful finish, the shoreline gold (costed extra) is lovely, and the matching headstock really sets it off. - quality bridge, nice and solid. - Hipshot USA tuners (costed extra). - It's light. - the neck was slightly more shallow than I anticipated, which is perfect actually. Really fast and smooth neck. - frets slightly smaller than anticipated, really nice feel. - the above two points are largely born from my '71 Precision being my benchmark, which is a bit of a chunk. - really lovely & dark rosewood fingerboard! - the Haussel pickups sound great through my Markbass practice amp, but the real test is gigs this weekend, I'm confident! - did I mention it's light?! - the 'retro' strap that came with it is stunning, hugely happy with that! - nice gigbag too, simple but effective. Overall I'm incredibly happy, a 33" Precision bass is ultimately what I wanted, and I have that and more . Can't wait to gig it! Si
8. Hi guys, I made a little video primarily comparing the new COG T-16 with the Boss OC-2. Let's face it, the OC-2 is the benchmark for analogue octaves, and I'm a huge fan of it (I'm the guy who owned 9.....I only have 4 now ) The T-16, really is fantastic, especially with the added filter, very powerful feature. I just had the Nano POG arrive too, so thought I'd throw it in the mix, however it really is a different sounding sub-octave. Anyway, see what you think, headphones/good speakers absolutely necessary, you will not hear much on your phone/laptop speakers: http://youtu.be/fLXzbHRVvfQ Si
9. Here you go, T-16 vs OC-2 vs Nano POG https://youtu.be/fLXzbHRVvfQ Si
10. Is there any CITES restrictions with moving this around the world (touring etc) due to the Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard? Si
11.
More Ed Friedland comparisons.
Seen these before, and I have to admit, the Lull 5 was the only one that sounded particulaly different really, the rest I absolutely wouldn't tell apart in a band mix. So then it just comes down to how they play and feel to the individual Si
12.
Hey man. How's the idiot box for low end drive with fuzz rolled back?
PM'd
13. I built one of the a FuzzDog ones and it's great, huge sounding gates fuzziness! Maybe there's some extra tonal detail from the specific components Zvex uses, but not circa £150 worth in my humble opinion. But then part of what you're paying for is the hand-painted enclosure, and they do have some cool artists. Si
14. Whilst there are lots of amazing Precision basses out there (this thread is a little like 'Which family car is best'), I can comment on my experience with ordering from Maruszczyk. Adrian will be your point of contact, and whilst there is a slight language/translation barrier and some short answers every now and then, Adrian is so incredibly helpful and fast at replying he's a true credit to the brand! He has made the process very quick and easy. My build has been 13weeks and 3 days from deposit paid to arriving with me (tomorrow), a little longer than most of a similar spec on here, but I did have some non-standard custom options. From a customer service and ease of use point of view, couldn't recommend them enough. I'm very much looking forward to getting my hands on it, I'm confident it'll be great though as, like Michael, I'm coming from a '71 Precision. The other suggestions I'd have are: - Find an awesome 70's Precision - Get a Mike Lull (not tried a bad one) Both those options cost more than the Maruszczyk, but will be awesome Si
15. Clearing out some more pedals and found this clean boost I built into an enclosure painted by my mate. Unfortunately there are some nicks and little scratches to the finish. 125B sized enclosure (same size as a Boss pedal), but with top mounted jacks. Nice large control. Clean inside, all quality components (Alpha switch, switchcraft jacks etc) Poultone branded PCB (laid out by me) SOLD Cheers Si
16. Build one yourself for £35 http://shop.pedalparts.co.uk/Fat_Furry_Freak_-_bass_fuzz_monster_-_board-mounted_pots/p847124_13048100.aspx If you can solder that is Si
17.
I find it interesting/annoying that we have to pay to sell items. I'm a member of a few forums and BC is only forum where you have to pay. Bah humbug!!
Maybe sell your bass on those forums then, or ebay? Si
18. Adrian says it weighs 7.3 lbs :-D Si
19.
Thanks for that, nice to read an interview that poses relevant questions across a range of topics rather than just focusing on the promotion of an artist's latest venture which seems so prevalent in magazine and tv interviews.
Thanks for the kind words Si
20.
I think the Hendrix comparison is pretty much spot on. For me I'd say they're both a bit like a Ferrari Daytona - the modern equivalent has obviously progressed significantly and is more sophisticated and refined and even a modern family hatchback (or bedroom YouTube bassist if you will) can outperform it in many areas. The original however just has something - call it mojo if you like - that is harder to recreate. Personally, being more into rock than jazz, I find Jimi more accessible than Jaco but that's probably more down to genre than playing. That said I'm quite liking his son Felix's playing right now!
Felix is a hell of a player! I recently did an email with him if of interest: http://simonpoulton.tumblr.com And yes, Jaco was really all that, his facility was incredible, his composition and ear was amazing too. Do I like his entire output, no of course not. There's a few videos of him playing Piano too, beautiful playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBhoDaS5SKQ Si
21. Totally and utterly subjective. It could be argued that the early 60's era is the best for quality control, but I've still never played a 60's Precision to beat my '71 P Not sure I'd touch an 80's Fender, unless it was one of the Japanese 'vintage' series ones. Si
22.
Really diggin' that colour. Great choice. Could you specify that the headstock only had the logo too? I think that looks really smart.
Yes you can specify that as an option, just the 'M' logo and no text And yes, someone else asked, pickups are fully configurable, placement, size, casing, everything. Quite amazing really. Si
