1. I've just had a quick search and can't see any for sale at all :-P You might be able to contact Bjorn directly, if he's still hand-building for people?! Maybe keep an eye out over here: http://www.bjfe.org/index.php Si
2. Good luck finding a second-hand one! Mad Professor makes a more readily available 'production' run of the pedal, never tried one but people seem to like it. Fuzzrocious also do their take on it called 'Dark Driving' Si
3. I had great results from the GGG Green Muff, I also added the AMZ Mid/body/presence control, which is great. Good place to start Si
4. I can highly recommend the GGG Green Muff Clone to build Si
5.
2. Use a heat sink when working with certain components, e.g. 1N34 diodes, as they don't like getting too hot.
Although I often socket diodes too! Do you know what Fuzz you want to build? Each circuit has inherent pitfalls really. Si
6.
I don't even particularly like muse!!!
Perhaps not, but distortion is fun! Si
7. A Bass Muff Deluxe and a Lomenzo Drive a small pedalboard do not make lol Si
8.
I also asked Tom to remove the silicon diodes, and put a three-way switch in to select between LEDs, asymmetric LEDs and no diodes (you'd love this Si! ;-)).
It's ALL about asymmetric LEDs Si
9.
a Rat Tail's distortion isn't it? Do you have any experience with the darkglass vmt?
Distortion, overdrive, the only real difference is saturation. I've only played the B7K, and I wouldn't hurry back to it, but the VMT is meant to be more warm and 'tube-like'....hence the name I guess. Si
10. I have to say, blasphemous, but I don't get on with the B3K or B7K, like you say, very metallic and not too warm......or natural sounding to my ears. All harmonic distortion and no meat (without using a blend). Gimme my Rat Tail any day Si
11. Yeah Thuminator is everything below 30hz, don't think I'd want to cut any higher than that tbh, cutting at 50hz you're going to be losing from the E string which I thought sat around 41hz Si
12.
Joe's pedals have a used MD-2 for sale http://www.joespedal...Distortion.html £35! Bargain...
Used to be mine, so its the one in that video/audio test Si
13. Bare in mind that the LPB-1 is essentially a clean boost, it will only work as an overdrive if it's driving a tube amp (which you might be running of course), you don't want to clip your solid-state amp :-/ If you're on a budget, I can confirm that the Boss MD-2 is cool, more than enough bottom end on tap, I much preferred it over the ODB-3, especially in the band mix. In fact, have an oolldddd comparison vid I did: For all three 8-bar riffs the sequence is: Clean - ODB-3 - MD-2 (so ignore the picture) As above, I've also heard good things about the Hardwire CM-2. The Bad Monkey is cool, basically a tube-screamer, however often requires a mod to get enough bottom-end through. Si
14. Yes I would stay away from the ODB-3. More fizzy buzz than anything IMO. If you're handy with a soldering iron, why not consider putting something together yourself. Check out pedalparts.co.uk , full kits galore Si
15. Interested in an MXR Gate as a trade? Cheers Si
16.
I hit all the right notes..sounds great on the intro but I do get lost in the mix once the other guys kick in...im finding a big muff with some octave seems to be giving the best results..though I also agree im probably making a to bigger deal as I dont think the punters really give a f***!..
Remember most stock Muffs have a mid cut. If you can find a Muff/fuzz with a flat mid response, or better yet a mid controlled, you'll have a better time of it . It's fairly easy to mod stock Muffs with the above. Si
17. Don't get me wrong, we (perhaps) jest about their religion, but he always seems like a lovely guy, knowledgable, helpful and I certainly wouldn't judge him for his beliefs. If anything, he's a bit of a personal bass hero. Noice Si
18.
Lots of good points raised by bob and si. Forums introduced me to the xotic BB preamp and the wren an cuff TFR, which i'd never have found out about at PMT, so for that and that alone, it's worth sifting through all the annoying fanboi-ism However, i am annoyed to hear JMJ may be one of those tom cruise madmen... My diabolik is now tarnished, and i'm yet to use it yet!!
I agree, forums, the same as any community, can be worthshile fountains of knowledge. However one must always keep perspective and trust ones own ears! I think a number of the Beck lot are 'Science Science' oddbods Si
19.
I will be playing Plug In Baby this Saturday and I will just switch to the P pickup and max the bass's treble control. My amp is always set for a bit of grit. Job done. The only people who will notice if you nail the sound are you and any Muse-loving bass players in the audience. I'm not saying you shouldn't shoot for a sound that is appropriate, but the effort of duplicating the original sound may be better expended elsewhere e.g. playing the song correctly!
I agree with this. I've played Plug In Baby a few times for people and I've just used a bit of grit/dirt on the verses/choruses, then some fuzz for the instrumental bits/intro/outro. Sounds great, sorted quickly, more time to learn the song correctly. Done Having said that, I've got a pedals stock to choose sounds from at any given time, probably slightly harder for someone who needs this sound coming from not using any pedals at all. Si
20.
Oh, and going back to the documentary, I didn't realise how eccentric JMJ was...
Pretty sure he's a Scientologist, which is pretty disappointing lol
With the amount of colouring fuzz does I can understand the fear some may have of losing their identity but (talking about effects in general now) when you take into account technique, plectrum gauge/right hand attack, string type/material/gauge, the instrument itself (including all the wood, hardware, pickups, wiring and setup), amplifier (and potentially individual valves), speakers (size, brand, material) cabinet (material, ported/unported, tweeters etc) then an overdrive, compressor and a few patch leads seem like very little in the whole equation How many guys have B7Ks now? A lot. How many of them sound exactly like me? None. Always remember that even if you play with no pedals or have a Pedaltrain Pro filled with the crème of boutique stuff you are still going to play and sound like you I could gig without any pedals quite happily but it's nice to have a little spice for those guitar solos, lead breaks and those rare moments when the bass gets to shine.
I think it's important to realise that not many people (in the world....ever), have become well known simply for the sound of their voice, but more for what they say with that voice. Sure if you have a nice sounding voice, people might listen a little harder, but never is it a substitute for meaningful content in your words/playing. Sure Jaco had a sound, but he sounded like Jaco on a fretted bass too. Si
21. I remember getting the first photo of my etched enclosure, very exciting! Si
22. I've approximated a few Muse songs for various gigs through the years and I've just used a Muff of some description, a gate can help keep it clean/synthy. Having a subtle envlelope can help with the synthy sound, but Joe Bloggs just expects to hear a dirty bass sound really If it's a one off, approximate, if you're a tribute act, good luck buying a Deep Impact and an Animato! Si
23. Depends what the freequency of tyour HPF is set to. The Meatbox low end sits at around 35-30hz, the SFX thumpinator HPF, for example, cuts everything below 30hz, so you may or may not lose a little from the sound, however this may be something that works for you. As you say, some amps already have HPF/LPF features, so play about with them. Si
24. From what I've heard from Ant, he had no issues at all. Si
