1.
I will be playing Plug In Baby this Saturday and I will just switch to the P pickup and max the bass's treble control. My amp is always set for a bit of grit. Job done. The only people who will notice if you nail the sound are you and any Muse-loving bass players in the audience. I'm not saying you shouldn't shoot for a sound that is appropriate, but the effort of duplicating the original sound may be better expended elsewhere e.g. playing the song correctly!
I agree with this. I've played Plug In Baby a few times for people and I've just used a bit of grit/dirt on the verses/choruses, then some fuzz for the instrumental bits/intro/outro. Sounds great, sorted quickly, more time to learn the song correctly. Done Having said that, I've got a pedals stock to choose sounds from at any given time, probably slightly harder for someone who needs this sound coming from not using any pedals at all. Si
  2.
Oh, and going back to the documentary, I didn't realise how eccentric JMJ was...
Pretty sure he's a Scientologist, which is pretty disappointing lol
With the amount of colouring fuzz does I can understand the fear some may have of losing their identity but (talking about effects in general now) when you take into account technique, plectrum gauge/right hand attack, string type/material/gauge, the instrument itself (including all the wood, hardware, pickups, wiring and setup), amplifier (and potentially individual valves), speakers (size, brand, material) cabinet (material, ported/unported, tweeters etc) then an overdrive, compressor and a few patch leads seem like very little in the whole equation How many guys have B7Ks now? A lot. How many of them sound exactly like me? None. Always remember that even if you play with no pedals or have a Pedaltrain Pro filled with the crème of boutique stuff you are still going to play and sound like you I could gig without any pedals quite happily but it's nice to have a little spice for those guitar solos, lead breaks and those rare moments when the bass gets to shine.
I think it's important to realise that not many people (in the world....ever), have become well known simply for the sound of their voice, but more for what they say with that voice. Sure if you have a nice sounding voice, people might listen a little harder, but never is it a substitute for meaningful content in your words/playing. Sure Jaco had a sound, but he sounded like Jaco on a fretted bass too. Si
  3. I remember getting the first photo of my etched enclosure, very exciting! Si
  4. I've approximated a few Muse songs for various gigs through the years and I've just used a Muff of some description, a gate can help keep it clean/synthy. Having a subtle envlelope can help with the synthy sound, but Joe Bloggs just expects to hear a dirty bass sound really If it's a one off, approximate, if you're a tribute act, good luck buying a Deep Impact and an Animato! Si
  5. Depends what the freequency of tyour HPF is set to. The Meatbox low end sits at around 35-30hz, the SFX thumpinator HPF, for example, cuts everything below 30hz, so you may or may not lose a little from the sound, however this may be something that works for you. As you say, some amps already have HPF/LPF features, so play about with them. Si
  6. From what I've heard from Ant, he had no issues at all. Si
  7.
As most people expected, Aen and the Dwarfcraft team are the ones who have taken the Devi brand on. Those folks who make Devi pedals on licence (like Mantic who make the Hyperion) seem to have lost that right in the hand over. I have huge respect for Aen - he's a top dude and does killer work so I'm excited to see what he does for the brand!
Yeah I think a few people called it pretty much instantly. I think he'll revoke all the Devi kits too, which is a shame, but hey, gotta consolidate the brand a little perhaps! Si
  8. JMJ........love that guy! Si

How is it? Si

I"m actually a bit hazy as to what the deal is with lead solder. I don't think it's illegal to use broadly speaking, however I don't believe it can be used in commercially available produce?! Maybe someone can clarify. Luckily my dad is an electronics engineer of some 40 years............so I have various supplies of decent components/tools to hand . I always socket ICs, usually socket Transistors, and sometimes socket Diodes. If you want to be super careful/experimental, socket everything you can manage Si
  11. Dammit, I'm rehearsing Si
  12.
I'd seen this before but watched again last night, v interesting! I've been watching a few music docs recently, the iron maiden one ('flight 666') is on youtube and worth a watch, even if you don't like the band
Yeah, same with me and Metallica's Some Kind Of Monster, can't stand the band, brilliant documentary! Si
  13. Enjoying it so far, will be finishing it later Si
I'm not daunted by the wiring on this. I have already rewired a couple of my own basses, and although I'm new to building pedals, I like to think I'm technically minded enough to cope ok. Hopefully it won't be a one off thing either but I'll take it one project at a time. Thanks for the supportive replies - I'll let you know how it goes.
Get to it! Si
  15. I hate Fuzz through 10inch speakers and, as Gaz mentions, tweeters! Very interested to hear your thoughts on the Diabolik Gaz! Si
  16. Hi guys, Picked this up a little while ago on here, but haven't really used it. I'll get some pictures of the actual unit asap (it's in decent condition), but the same as this: No box or manual, but will be packed well. £35 + £3 postage (take off postage for a trade). I'm mostly interested in trades, I can make up the balance if i'm particulaly interested. Basically WHY? TRADED Si
  17. Yeah, love my M82, best filter I've tried! Good luck Si
I'm thinking about starting building my own pedals in the new year. I've seen a BYOC bass overdrive http://buildyourownc...soverdrive.html and I'm wondering if anyone here has built one of these? The You Tube demo sounds ok. I love the blend feature, that's a must for me. Or, any suggestions for anything similar? Bearing in mind, this is my first attempt. Cheers.
I believe that kit is essentially an Xotic BB Pre with a blend feature (I've never felt the need for a Blend with that circuit). 5 knobs worth of offboard wiring could be enough to put you off for life haha. As such, I'd suggest starting with something like a clean boost or a Fuzz Face, just to get you into the swing of it, only 1 or 2 knobs worth of wiring (sometimes even on-board pots mmmmmmm). Having said that, if you're literally just talking about a one-off because you want a bass drive......go for it, patience are a must though Good luck Si
  19. There was also a fair amount of low end coming from the Compacts ports that wasn't getting picked up by the mic. The BDPG has a ton of low-end on the tone knob too. I preferably wanted to record the audio into Logic, but I've misplaced the adapter for my interface, so had to make do with the USB cardioid Si
  20. Cheers bud See for me, the combo is RT & BDPG, 3:30 sounds lush to my ears Si
  21.
Nice one Si ! Much appreciated. I particularly liked the Demon on it's own right near the start. Is that a standard Demon ? I don't remember my old Demon King sounding quite like that.
Hey bud, Yeah completely stock/standard Demon I think it was low-gain at the start of the vid. If it makes a difference, I played the bass part with a pick (not my strong-point), but if you're a fingers player like I am 90% of the time, it's going to sound less grindy. Si
  22. There you go Listen through decent headphones/speakers please! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSL9jALcHNk Si
  23. I agree, it's much braver of someone to hold their hands up in the face of a mistake and admit it. Unfortunately in this case, simply due to the scope of the 'mis-management', I think it will be very difficult indeed to pay everyone back. This of course then continues to reflect badly on her despite her self-proclaimed good intentions. I hope that everyone involved gets back what they deserve Si
  24.
Never really liked anything with mosfet clipping, inparticular the fulltone bass drive.
Yeah I wouldn't have MOSFET as my initial choice, but I can make it work, and my Demon does sound awesome. Given the choice, I use LEDs, or certainly that's what I'm running my GS (asymmetric LEDs), RT, Cog 66 etc. Interestingly, the Rat I built with clipping options sounds better low-gain with no diodes selected, and better in high-gain with LEDs. Si
  25.
Without getting weird as I know nothing of devi ever until Fuzzrocious posted it on FB. Is she a he or was a he and is now a she.
He is a pre-op she Si
