Do you think that "Real" Musicians era is going to end ?
Yep, it's surely best to major in Lavatory Tissue Strategy and Production Management in today's economy . The violinists in one of my bands both studied at the RCM and make a very decent living and get gigs with household names and major tours. They teach, do sessions and play with orchestras and pop and rock bands, X Factor, etc. The sitarist I play with studied for years with a grand master in Berklee, she makes a good living and gets prestigious gigs, sessions and composing commissions, such as the Olympics, composing with Sir John Tavener, touring and writing with Courtney Pine, The Imagined Village, Cornershop ... Our drummer in Kit's band studied at Drumtech, he's young and makes a decent living playing lots of decent gigs and by teaching. I also work with artists who only did music at school. They make a good living with recording and performing careers as band founders and members. They all share the same qualities - they are all extremely good musicians and very talented, highly reliable, very articulate, and great people to be around. They also have great passion for music and are willing to play with a band for no money if they love the music. The OP can make this happen for him too if he shares these qualities, It's what you are, not how you do it that really seems to count.
I think this is down to their hard work, not what they studied, which I think is what you're getting at. I don't think any kind of music degree guarantees being a successful 'session' (ick hate that term) musician. What it does allow you to do is concentrate on your playing and hone your networking skills....no-one who hires you will be fussed by the piece of paper or the type of degree at the end, thats a bi-product of the work/networking you do during the course. So while I agree with the sentiment that technically a music degree is pointless, from the point of view that you might as well study something as a 'backup' because the actually award at the end is worthless.....doing that won't allow you the time to hone your craft like a music specific degree will. It is also true that very few players JUST play, you gotta teach, arrange, produce, manage, write....its all part of the game Good luck Si -
Hi all As there really isn't any demos/youtube vids of the MD-2 being used with Bass, I decided to do a very basic (ie not changing any settings) comparison between the Boss ODB-3 & MD-2.The settings on both pedals are as close to each other as possible, and is what I use live on the MD-2.Please listen on decent speakers/headphones. For all three 8-bar riffs the sequence is: Clean -> ODB-3 -> MD-2 I was looking for a pedal that didn't necessarily give me angry metallic sounds, but just low end texture without sounding like a bee in a jar. I checked out the ODB-3 and really didn't like it, it kinda sounds alright on its own, a little hi-fi maybe, but live...just completely lost in the mix with no texture. The MD-2, although primarily a guitar pedal, was recommended to me by another member on here as well as my long-time guitarist. I was sceptical but live it absolutely kicks ass. Not too angry or 'metal', but nice low end texture and an even tone across the neck, unlike the ODB-3 which to my ears doesn't sound great at all in the high end. Bass is my 1971 Precision straight into a Focusrite Saffire 24 DSP, no sounds messed with in Logic, recorded as-is http://soundcloud.com/simonpoulton/bass-distortions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pimHiDdNl34&feature=youtu.be Cheers Si

It's a loop pedal, not on my amp. I don't even use it to drop FX in and out (like I do on my other board), it's literally just because I prefer going in and out of my pedal board at the same place Si

My '71 Precision, haven't used anything else since I got it 6months ago....even my '73 Jazz is starting to feel un-used (even though it goes to every gig lol). Si
Got myself a bef pro with a wired hot hand, need to get the wireless one ASAP! What's your bef set up like in that track? Sounds nice Also, where in your chain is it, still trying to figure out where to put mine
My signal chain is: Bass -> Pedal FX loop send -> TU-2 -> OC-2 - > CoPilot FX Orbit -> ME-50B -> Slicer -> BEF -> FX loop return -> Amp I'm only using the standard BEF so: Frequency - 9 o'clock Sweep Range - 10 o'clock Speed - 1 o'clock Still messing around with it though.
Seems to be a lot of inconsistency in this thread. I'm not suggesting that a spare PA system is practical, but it would be consistent with the arguments about being professional and being able to ensure the show goes on. I suspect that a lot of people take a spare bass to a gig simply because they happen to have more than one rather than it being a carefully thought out strategy. After all, who cares how professional the bassist has been in duplicating all their gear if the PA fails and the band can't play the gig.
Believe me, we take a LOT of spares....a show will always carry on Si
It's a lovely melody to transfer to the bass. I'm only assuming he got the inspiration to do it from Victor?
Thats what I love about Victor, he'll fluff a run and just go with it and just pull it back to being fantastic! Fantastic OP vid too, the guy can seriously play, clearly he wouldn't be pulling this out on a gig, but the musical facility he has is inspiring Si

For me, it's less to do with what my gear is doing and what I'm doing with it. By that I mean I don't take a backup in case something breaks down or I break a string (which hasn't happened in 5 years), I take a spare because it's external issues I worry about. What if someone barges into your gear just after you setup, breaks a string, worse....breaks the neck, no gig for you . A fight breaks out, beer gets thrown, soaks your pickups, crackle crackle boom lol, etcetc I know they're all things that very very rarely happen, and if you're playing nice chilled acoustic cafes or big stages where no-one comes close to your gear, its fine....but I'd rather be setup to carry on the gig than look a bit of a lemon because I took one bass to a gig and left one at home Si

best overdrive/distortion pedal for a Orange Bass Terror 500w?
Sibob replied to barricades's topic in Effects
People are just generally gonna tell you what they like/play.....best thing to do is take your Orange to a shop and try out the pedals. Better yet, borrow some from people and gig them, sound so different on a gig!. Me? I have a Copilot FX Orbit for weird sounds, and a Boss Mega Distortion for more conventional overdrive/distortion, both do exactly what I want them to Si -
Sounds ace Si - I must get me one of those thumb things... sounds and looks cool
Thanks very much mate, yeah its a good little toy....although I find it very useable not just for 'silly' sounds, I like the expressiveness I can get that I would perhaps struggle with by using expression pedals I also referred to your 'How to do a video' thread, so thanks lol Si

Wanted to do a little demo of the dubstep board, so thought I'd try a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D24sVPLsSnw Sounds are: Intro/Chorus: OC-2, ME-50B (Slow Gear, Chorus/Reverb) Verse: Same as chorus but with SourceAudio BEF Drop: OC-2, ME-50B (Distortion, Chorus, Whammy), CoPilot FX Orbit, BEF Cheers Si

Hey guys, cheers for the comments.....I did a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D24sVPLsSnw So refined sounds are: Intro/Chorus: OC-2, ME-50B (Slow Gear, Chorus/Reverb) Verse: Same as chorus but with SourceAudio BEF Drop: OC-2, ME-50B (Distortion, Chorus, Whammy), CoPilot FX Orbit, BEF Cool Si

All about the OC-2, I find it incredibly musical. I have two, a Korean one and a Japanese one , because I have one on each of my two pedal-boards lol Si

Follow Steve on Twitter etc.....so much good stuff comes from him, not just the music Si
-
Try and get those root-five-octave parts going from the original bass part, they make the part bubble . But good stuff, I've been playing 10 years, and I still struggle to sing and play, kudos !! Si p.s. Just heard you doing the full part during the guitar solo
Bass Merchant, maybe they sold some of their stock over?
I think Bass Merchant took most of their stock to a shop in Brentwood....not sure which one. Si

So I made a VERY rough demo of my board, mostly to get to grips with the Source Audio BEF w/hot-hand. Still figuring out what is possible, but at least this gives you a musical context. http://soundcloud.com/simonpoulton/picture-live-bass-demo Cheers Si
Here's V.4 of my 'dubstep' board:
I made a VERY rough demo, just to get to grips with the BEF in a musical setting. All a bit rough, but you get an idea as to what is possible with the Hot-hand: http://soundcloud.com/simonpoulton/picture-live-bass-demo Si

Here's V.4 of my 'dubstep' board: Recent additions are the Source Audio BEF w/ Hot Hand & the Boss tuner, which I'm essentially using as a quick killswitch when I have the Volume on the ME50b in Whammy mode. Audio samples real soon Si

I have to say....and I'm sure its just down to how I listened to the samples.....but every sound was very very similar?! Looks nice though lol Si

I've got two Compacts. I mostly use one, putting my MarkBass through it, probably around 300w or so, I've never wanted for anything more. Plenty plenty loud enough for small & medium gigs, and large gigs I have PA support. When I put 500w through both Compacts...phew it sounds huge! Huge enough to convince Shep to buy his Barefaced Si

Manual?? Where's the fun in that? Si
