I go to Steve Lawson when I can, drive from South Bucks to Catford because it's so worth it Plus he does 2 hour lessons, the last time I checked, Dave Marks wouldn't!? Si
-
I got pretty clean sounds very loudly on the 500, just increase the volume the same as the gain, as opposed to boosting gain to get overdrive! Si

I think the tuners are early 70's! He does mention that they as well as the strap buttons aren't original. If it was something you wanted to restore with a nice refinish, original tuners, nut, pots etc, you're probably talking an extra grand on top. If all of that gave you a refinish with all original parts '62 for £4k, then that seems about right for a private sale, if it was all original at around 8k (refinish=half off usually). Thats if you're bothered about all that malarky, if it plays and sounds like a dream, then just keep it the way it is! But it would be very cool! Si
Locking-in doesn't necessarily mean always hitting a bass note on a kick drum beat - it's the interplay between the two.
Oh no I completely agree, I suppose the term 'locking in' conjurs up ideas of being constrained, when the interplay is in truth a lot more organic and flexible Si
2) If you're not locked in with the kick, there will be no groove.
Depends on context If you listen to a lot of Nu-Soul, most notably D'angelo's Voodoo album (Questlove & Pino), there's rarely a bass note sitting on a bass drum or snare.....and they groove like a no-ones business!. QL sits way behind on the beat and Pino is almost in another postcode lol Sounds amazing though! Si

I always try and listen to the whole kit for sure, including hi-hats obviously. It really gives you an amazing choice of rhythms to choose from and lock in with. Obviously most of the time, kick, snare and hi-hats are the main choice, but theres definitly some times when playing with a tom or a china for example can sound great! Si

I had a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz, it was fantastic for the money, but wasn't quite as solid feeling or sound as good as my American Jazz. Its all cheaper parts and wood, just very well constructed. They're excellent for the price, simple as that! Si

Yeah it all started to add up! Si

Man, If I was closer, I'd have those Fender bass cases! Si

Not sure about Larry Graham, I know I SHOULD go as he's a legend bass player. Will probably be at Jazz Cafe for Dot Funk, so will be about the area! Si

Paul Turner at the Jazz Cafe - Apr 25th, With Dot Funk
Sibob replied to Platypus's topic in General Discussion
Yeah I think I'm going to Dot Funk over Larry Si -
Yup, variety is the spice of life! I bet you that the best Jazz musicians/writers don't just listen to Jazz....they write amazing music by taking in, enjoying, and playing all sorts, thats what makes their musical output different! Same goes for any genre, e.g. metal bands who ONLY listen to metal are usually horrible to listen to, those that have eclectic listening and playing tastes often have much more interesting output! Si
-
I think its important not to get into an argument here! The OP essentially posted a question, it was asked from what seems to be a dedicated Jazz fan/player stance, when other players who's musical tastes are perhaps more broad answer the post, then yes they will answer the question positively. Si
-
You missing something is that you (seemingly) think these players automatically put 'Jazz' over 'music' just because of their ability! Thats what I'm seeing anyway! If you would choose Jazz over anything else, then fair enough.....its a shame because you'd miss out on a lot....but don't think that all these players are the same just because they can shred Si
-
My point was that these guys don't get to the top of their game by disliking very much, they're the kinda guys who love music....they don't hear genres. Perhaps their preference is for Jazz, perhaps they just get offered more Jazz gigs compared to straight 'pop' players because of their level of ability! Si
-
4000 beat me to it! Si

I think the OP's original post indicates that they believe Jazz to be better than all other Genres, or certainly thats their preference as opposed to other more 'simple' music. The reason I say that is because they don't seem to be able to accept that perhaps these players LIKE playing their pop gigs. If the guys hated it, I perhaps think that their careers would be shortlived through bitterness. I can honestly say that I'd be very hard pushed to not enjoy any gig, Genre aside, I think if you're truely a fan of music, you'll find an aspect of any genre (if you think about music in that way) to enjoy! Same with these guys, I bet you Garrison and Gwizdala don't see these gigs as Pop/rent over Jazz.....they see it as fun whilst getting paid. Si

I've been pretty happy for the last couple of years really, I've had peripheral basses come in and out, but my core MIA Jazz and '73 Jazz and now MIA 5er Jazz have made me very happy. My Ashdown mini 48 & 15 are awesome, my ABM500II is brilliant, I've started to really like the Orange Terror, but only because it has a similar sound my Ashdown....at half the size and weight ha! I've also recently discovered Precisions , so loving my Japanese Squier, and perhaps....maybe....another Precision soon Si

Bump for the following specs added to the OP: Nut width is: 42mm String spacing at bridge is approx 18mm (string edge to string edge) and also extra pics of the case (should it be required), flame on fingerboard, headstock (sans decal), underside body damage (worst example on the bass), small impact in neck. I've had one or two people after the case on its own, this is a special £15 price if included with the bass, if the purchaser of the bass doesn't want the hardcase for that amount, I'll sell the case for £25 Cheers Si

They have to pay rent like the rest of us, consider the Jazz gigs as 'originals shows' and the TV/R&B gigs as covers shows! Quite normal I'd say, pop gigs are fun, its not all about playing 17 notes a second over tri-tonal substitutions Si
-
Some offers/interest here and there, but still available I should mention that the neck width is similar to that of a Precision, fairly wide, but still very playable. I can try and do some sound samples if you want, but my personal opinion is that by the time I've recorded it DI, you've streamed it as an mp3 out of your PC speakers, it's going to sound wildly different than plugged into your <amp brand>....but its your call. This is why I advocate trying it yourself I'm in and out of London all the time btw, so thats not an issue if you're based that way Cheers Si

Anything that is chambered I would have thought! If you have the budget, a chambered Swamp Ash custom of some sort!?, and you can still keep the design traditional! Si
