1. Did you see the article about the P-retro in this months BGM?, or know about it before hand? Have you tried the '64 with rounds in a gigging enviroment? Si
2. I just couldn't put all my faith into in-house monitors, some of the places I've played couldn't handle any type of bass frequency! Rather just cover all bases and take my amp! In-ears are a bit different, but I'd still miss the air being moved behind me! Si
3. For me its not the fact that its collectible, and removing the solder will somehow devalue it. It's that it's a 46 year old bass, sounds like a cool 46 year old bass, so use it as such (with amp and outboard controls ). If I wanted an active bass, I'd buy a MIJ or MIA and put the preamp in that Si
4. Depends what you call 'reasonable'?? You get what you pay for in my experience! Si
5. Clarky, if you don't get alright with the Chiswick one, a very good friend of mine is in Acton, excellent player and even better guy, lemme know if you want his number! I'm pretty sure he does privates, he teaches at one of the schools Si
6. Can't think of anything worse than having no backline! Horrible! Si
7.
Had a comment by PM that the Jamerson tone is what's special about a '64 Precision. Fair point for sure. I guess the obvious question in response is do you think that, were it available at the time, his tone would have been better with a P-Retro? C EDIT. What I mean is do you think that if he had the opportunity to install an on-board preamp, he would have done?
Well, probably not, Jameson strikes me as being a player, not a gear head! Think of all the awesome P players of today, guys like Pino......do you think they have active circuits in their P's? No....they have other basses for that. I mean I'm just playing Devils Advocate, but all I can say is if I were to buy an old Precision (and I am looking), its because it sounds like an old Precision, not because I want a bass with provenance that sounds like a new 'super-precision' If you are intent though, it sounds like it's going to be a case of removing solder, seeing as you can't lift out the whole harness! Oh and an apology, I certainly don't mean to derail this topic, just speaking my mind on the issue I can see the appeal, John's preamps are the best in the business!!! Si
8. But seemingly you are sentimental about the solder, otherwise you'd just do the mod and wouldn't have started a thread about it! lol Si
9. Did Clarky delete his posts? Why don't you go with something outboard? I'm sure John could put you something together using a P-retro circuit Si
10. I go to Steve Lawson when I can, drive from South Bucks to Catford because it's so worth it Plus he does 2 hour lessons, the last time I checked, Dave Marks wouldn't!? Si
11. I got pretty clean sounds very loudly on the 500, just increase the volume the same as the gain, as opposed to boosting gain to get overdrive! Si
12. I think the tuners are early 70's! He does mention that they as well as the strap buttons aren't original. If it was something you wanted to restore with a nice refinish, original tuners, nut, pots etc, you're probably talking an extra grand on top. If all of that gave you a refinish with all original parts '62 for £4k, then that seems about right for a private sale, if it was all original at around 8k (refinish=half off usually). Thats if you're bothered about all that malarky, if it plays and sounds like a dream, then just keep it the way it is! But it would be very cool! Si
13.
Locking-in doesn't necessarily mean always hitting a bass note on a kick drum beat - it's the interplay between the two.
Oh no I completely agree, I suppose the term 'locking in' conjurs up ideas of being constrained, when the interplay is in truth a lot more organic and flexible Si
14.
2) If you're not locked in with the kick, there will be no groove.
Depends on context If you listen to a lot of Nu-Soul, most notably D'angelo's Voodoo album (Questlove & Pino), there's rarely a bass note sitting on a bass drum or snare.....and they groove like a no-ones business!. QL sits way behind on the beat and Pino is almost in another postcode lol Sounds amazing though! Si
15. I always try and listen to the whole kit for sure, including hi-hats obviously. It really gives you an amazing choice of rhythms to choose from and lock in with. Obviously most of the time, kick, snare and hi-hats are the main choice, but theres definitly some times when playing with a tom or a china for example can sound great! Si
16. I know you've posted a link to the advert, but could you still put a price on this thread please!? Many thanks! Si
17. Which Antigua you thinking of parting with? Si
18. I had a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz, it was fantastic for the money, but wasn't quite as solid feeling or sound as good as my American Jazz. Its all cheaper parts and wood, just very well constructed. They're excellent for the price, simple as that! Si
19. Yeah it all started to add up! Si
20. Man, If I was closer, I'd have those Fender bass cases! Si
21. Not sure about Larry Graham, I know I SHOULD go as he's a legend bass player. Will probably be at Jazz Cafe for Dot Funk, so will be about the area! Si
22. Yeah I think I'm going to Dot Funk over Larry Si
23. Yup, variety is the spice of life! I bet you that the best Jazz musicians/writers don't just listen to Jazz....they write amazing music by taking in, enjoying, and playing all sorts, thats what makes their musical output different! Same goes for any genre, e.g. metal bands who ONLY listen to metal are usually horrible to listen to, those that have eclectic listening and playing tastes often have much more interesting output! Si
24. I think its important not to get into an argument here! The OP essentially posted a question, it was asked from what seems to be a dedicated Jazz fan/player stance, when other players who's musical tastes are perhaps more broad answer the post, then yes they will answer the question positively. Si
25. You missing something is that you (seemingly) think these players automatically put 'Jazz' over 'music' just because of their ability! Thats what I'm seeing anyway! If you would choose Jazz over anything else, then fair enough.....its a shame because you'd miss out on a lot....but don't think that all these players are the same just because they can shred Si
