Best Place to get a Jazz Neck with blocks and binding ?
Sibob replied to peety's topic in Bass Guitars
I've got one for sale mate! PM you now! Si -
Yeah I get that email too, I'm not sure why......I think it's cos I once asked them if they'd give me a bass for free! They didn't! :-P Si

This is provoked by a couple of comments in the '64 Jazz thread in the FS section , but thought I'd post here so as not to derail it.
See, this is the problem right, there is a lot of bullshit talked about old Fenders. If it plays like Andy says it does, it's worth the money, or thereabouts, to a real bass player, refin or not. For £2000 you can get yourself an early '70s three bolt with more problems than your local alky. Massive hand routed neck sockets for instance, because they pressed the neck adjuster disk badly. baseball bat necks, crap fretscales. I'm thinking this might be the business, but the refin crowd will shout it down to two-five. Who knows?

Voice of reason as always Nig, I never understand how doing something to improve a product can reduce it's value.
Surely it's fairly obvious that in any 'vintage' market, regardless of whether you agree with said market, if you replace something original with a reproduction, it will reduce its worth to an investor!?. Refinishes to collectors are worthless because they are not as the instrument was at it's inception. They're great for players obviously, a good friend of mine has just bought a '63 Precision with a stunning fiesta red refin for a price that would have been beyond him had it been original, he's happy because he's out playing a great bass each night. Absolutely not a comment on the price of the refinish '64 in the FS section, because I think it looks great, but as a comparison, Kings Road Guitars recently had an all original '64 Jazz in Candy Apple Red (rare custom colour), matching headstock, OHSC and that sold for £8600. Refins in the 'vintage' market....again, whether you agree with it or not....are generally considered to be half off. Then again, the vintage market is an anomaly with regards to pricing, it's not as if you can go to a different shop and get the same model off the shelf for cheaper...if you want something specific, you pay the price smile.gif Nige also mentions the stigma attached to refinishes....but surely in your post mate you attach a similar stigma to 70's Fenders . It's not directly related obviously, but there are some great refinishes, and there are some great mid-late 70's Fenders . So if it's fair to say that 70's fenders were general sub-par, isn't it also fair to allow that refinishes are going to be less attractive to collectors/investors!? Si

I'd be very cautious about booking ANY tour that didn't have a band collecting a guaranteed fee each night. If you're not collecting a set fee for each show, then I'd certainly assume you weren't getting paid at all, certainly from the point of view of writing a budget. That way, you know what it could cost you, and any payment is a bonus. It's difficult to budget completely because you have to obviously factor in prices for fuel and food in Europe, which varies a great deal I should imagine. If you're completely new to it, can I suggest touring in the UK first? Simply because if anything goes wrong on your learning curve.....you can get a bus home!! Good luck anyway! Si

Fender Jazz American Deluxe 5 string on finance?

PM's replied to . I can't really tell you why I keep coming back to my MIA Jazz, a completely stock Jazz I might add. I can't put my finger on it, the sound of it, the way the neck feels, everything just comes together and I relax when I play it.....tis an odd one. The only other bass that I've ever played that I've had anything near that has been my '73 Jazz, but even then I'll still pick up my MIA 80% of the time. Although to be fair, the '73 needs a refret and new strings, so its not fair comparison haha! Anyway, yeah, this is getting more interest than I anticipated, I'm gonna play it tonight at my gig (the whole gig, as opposed to a few songs, cave in and pick my MIA up), and makle a decision! Funx Si

Gonna say it again, baring in mind you seemingly haven't played the bass that containt the pickup you're looking to replace, what elements of the original are you trying to improve upon in a gigging situation?. That will help to narrow down the field a bit! Si
I'll be at the Stables gig on Sunday - I've seen Jonatha solo there before and was delighted to see that she was bringing a band this time, even more so when I saw it was Gail on bass.
Ooooo, maybe I'll try and get to The Stables, do you know if it's sold out.....I'll check lol *edit* Not sold out Si

Bugger, I heard about these gigs from Steve Lawson I think, but forgot to chase them up, now I realise the London date is on a night when I'm gigging! Poo GAD ftw Si

What's wrong with the stock pickups? Just thought I'd ask! Si

That's a very cool looking Jazz! Nice and understated as custom/fancy wood builds go! Si
Point of information to raise. If you have an '08 or prior CV (serial number starts with 08), which is stamped 'Crafted in China', then the body is not made of basswood, but of alder. Apparently, sometime in 2009, production was shifted from China to Indonesia, with a change in the specs, including a change from alder to basswood. I had a friendly chat with someone here in Florida who works in the instrument manufacturing industry, and who works with the factory where these basses were made (in China). This particular factory uses the same wood supplier as the Fender Custom Shop, and in fact has much larger wood stocks than Fender. Wood choice and quality control is apparently top notch, and basses cost more to produce at this factory than others in Asia; hence Fender's move of production last year to Indonesia. I handed my bass today over to Jeff Berlin's tech for the work I mentioned previously - right enough, he confirmed it was alder. Guess that explains the weight on mine - 9.5 lbs. I'm not sure what the '09 CV models sound like. But if you can snag an '08 that says 'Crafted in China', then you're on to a well built bass with good wood quality. Pretty much exactly the same as what many bassists of yesteryear would have played on.... No wonder Fender shifted production, I'm sure they literally cannot afford to make a bass this good at this price point. In passing, I note that OutToPlayJazz's CV was an 08/'China' model.
This is very interesting, the CV's seem to have been introduced around March '08, so nothing prior to that?!. I purchased my CV in the latter part of '09 absolutely new, and it was a Chinese made instrument. I imagine if the original ones were made of Alder, Fender would have made a big song and dance about it!? Si
is there any chance you might sell for cash, if so, how much would you be looking at?
I've now bumped the thread with a £400 price, but reserve the right to bottle out haha
Is it expensive to get a custom neck made by John Shuker? It looks absolutely stunning - I may need some time alone!! andy
This neck cost me £220, but thats with Birdseye fingerboard and binding options. So would be slightly less without those, but more if you wanted say block inlays, fancy wood neck, more frets, mult-laminate constructon etc etc Si

So back to Warwick Standards then lol Si

Yeah Steve's alright! Si
My CVJ is a stunner, no noticeable difference from the USA Standard Jazz I had before.
I would go along with this except for the pickups, my US Jazz sounds a lot better!. Possibly the tuners too, the MIA tuners are a lot nicer, but the CV definitly do the job well. Si

Yup, my American Jazz has that routing under the scratchplate around the neck pickup......but who cares. I'm playing a bass that sounds and feels awesome, who cares whether it looks like Jaco's lol. When I had my Squier CV, I remember the cavity being very tidy. Didn't think the pickups were great, but then it's a £250 bass, for that price you get a LOT of bass for your money, so you might have to drop some new pickups in it. I also found the pots to be excellent, and I didn't find it any noisier than any other single-coil bass. If it's truely not to your expectation, why not get GAK to replace it? Si
