1. Just wanted to say that Len is a top bloke, deal in the highest confidence! Haven't played the bass, but I bet it's lush! And I'm really getting into flake/sparkle finishes haha! Good luck Si
2. Yes, please include a non-vague price ASAP! Thanks Si
3. It could be that he writes some really cool lines and you learn from it!? Ask him why he wants no input from you! And if he is genuinely just wanting people to play his stuff note for note....in that instance, I would want paying for each gig and rehearsal. Si
4. On my 2003 3-tone sunburst jazz, if you remove the scratchplate, underneath is two-tone sunburst. Apparently to save money on red paint!?. I don't know whether they would have employed that kind of money-saving technique in 1960!? So potentially, whether it's two-tone or not under the scratchplate may or may-not be relevant. Si
5.
A 2T 'burst Jazz, you say? Never heard of that one!
Well that's what I was thinking! Would still be lush though Si
6. Man, a 2 tone Jazz bass would be my aesthetic dream! Si
7. I'm afraid I'm not interested, just thought it was a shame that it's going, seeing as you were one of the first to have one in the UK probably. Could you not just see about swapping it with someone for an Alleva 4? Si
8. So does this mean that the Alleva is for sale? Si
9. Just popped this over to Recording as well Si
10.
The one in V&R had a logo and a sign saying "This is NOT a Fender". It was one of the most horrid basses I've ever set fingers on, neck like a club.
I haven't tried it Funny how these things can vary. The one I tried in Gallery was very nice indeed, great neck, great sound. If I had money to burn, and more space at home, I'd have gone for it! Si
11. Very very nice! But yeah, that's gonna get on for £8000 at least I reckon! The pickups......did early Jazzes not have staggered pole-pieces? Si
12.
Haha, Yeah thats the plan. my website is being made at the moment. I'm going to doing custom stuff too. just trying to build it up slowly. I reckon the fender decals must magically appear on them..Im suprised vintage and rare havnt had a call from fender about the nash' they have in there with fender decals!
Haha! The Nash's I saw at V&R didn't have any decals on the headstock, but that was a year ago maybe. The Gallery have a Fender logo'd Nash, and Clarky's Nash has a logo. Magical indeed! Are you going to include such small details as the router hump in your relic builds? Si
13.
Not sure what I mean. I guess I am saying that liking and enjoying gear is ok as long as it DOESN'T overtake the music in importance. For me, its like the pleasure of owning a book for its binding and not for what it contains. By all means enjoy the artifact but not at the expense of the art. As for that conversation at a session: if they call me, its for me, not my bass(es). If they want generic Fender Jazz/Precision sound then they should call someone who has a clue what the difference is!! In 30 years of playing (this year), I have only ever had one MD who wanted something that specific (a low B in his case) and, to be blunt, he didn't really have a legitimate reason for it. I guess there are producers out there who can tell the difference but I can't see too many of them splitting hairs over a '57 or a '72. And not many of them are woirking in Suffolk anyway One of the things that a lot of people may not be aware of is how many jazz double bass players travel the world on tours without basses, picking up a new instrument in each city. And they mostly still sound like themselves. Hell, what do I know. I'm a Probation Officer.
Don't get me wrong, I see where you're coming from, you feel the same way about your Wal as I do about my Jazz, and yes my session scene was very tongue-in-cheek, but I too have done deps/sessions where the producer/band leader has asked for something specific (a 5er for a gig, and a Precision for a session). Why would I argue with him? If he thinks he knows what he wants, and I can do the job on a bass that I enjoy, then it's a win/win. True enough that most situations are happy to have you come in and use whatever bass you want as long as it's appropriate, but there's nothing wrong with having a small selection ready and waiting. Oh and your Wal is like a Fodera compared to my fenders....price wise haha And do Jazz db players travel without their bass of choice through choice or necessity. I can't imagine many players going "naaa, save the tour budget that's been set aside for instrument transport, I'll use whatever Stentor they got going"....truth be told, I think it's probably more to do with the lack of said budget! Si
14. Bilbo, it's almost like you're suggesting that a person who enjoys 'gear', generally won't be a good player!? I can imagine you on a session: "I bought my Wal and my Jazz bass"....."oh have you got a Precision, the producer wants a precision?"....."naa I'll just use the Jazz, it's the same"....."PINO??" lol, I jest of course. I do agree with Clarky though, it's about the place that bass takes in our lives, there's nothing wrong with investing time and money into something that makes us happy. Whenever I see pictures of Paul Turner he has a different bass, he generally only plays in one band, or certainly one type of music for his living......so he shouldn't technically need more than one or two basses.....but clearly he enjoys 'gear' Si
15. Bump for a great little project! Si
16.
haha...Its going to get my name on it! I'm proud of the instruments I make
Very good! It'll sell more with the Fender logo on though lol Nash & Bravewood know it Good luck with it though, sounds really interesting, and because Bravewood isn't going anymore, you could have a market open to you Si Disclaimer: Not that Nash or Bravewood have EVER made a guitar with a fender logo
17. For me, GAS hasn't been about getting the newest toy, it's been about getting a small selection of basses that I feel help me achieve the sound and vibe that I want to make music. It takes some of us a little while to find an instrument or 5 that we click with . I have my main 'go-to' bass that is perfect, my '03 MIA Jazz, it's been in the number one position for about 4 years now. Acting as backups are a '73 Jazz, and a Parts/Shuker Jazz for when the venue might be a little rough for the '73. For me it's important to have backups that are very similar in sound and feel to my main bass, what's the point of needing to swap basses for whatever reason, and having to completely mess with levels and EQ etc!?. I have a nice Precision, gotta have one of those, and a 5 string version of my main bass, an MIA 5 standard. They cater for my every need, sound and play perfectly and aren't fussy to the point of distraction. I'm a proper gear head, but usually for other people's purchases, when it comes to my gear, I just want the tools to help me get out the music that's in my head. And I'm pretty much there . Si PS The Classic Vibe is for sale
18. Cheers all .05uf apparently! Si
19. Anyone know what capacitors are found in US Fender Jazzes with vol/vol/tone config? I could look in mine, but it's probably quicker to ask haha Si
20.
(apart from a fender logo)
Yeah right! 99ster on here has a 1960 Jazz! Si
21.
Hi Sibob! Looks like mine doesn't she?
Kinda, although mine had the 2 soapbar pickups as opposed to the P/J config, the active/passive switch and a gloss finish. Si
22. Well I do love all my Rosewood basses, but the one Jazz I have with a maple fingerboard is the one the Shuker neck, and the birdseye on it is lovely. No front dots, just birdseye with black binding and side dots. You could have white binding to go with the body and birdseye front with no dots! Lovely Si
