I think I may have tried this like 4 or 5 years ago at the london shop. There can't be THAT many mocha brown 70's jazzes in Denmark street. I actually really like the colour......what's the damage on the back?....just a sticker and some paint gone?? Si

Pro Player Ian KIng - Does He Ever Visit This Site?
Sibob replied to StevieC's topic in General Discussion
Yup, nice to hear from another pro a bit more often! And I do have a soft spot for the new Take That tunes (oh and Million Love Songs...tune). Ian don't suppose you know who has the bass chair on Wicked at the moment?, saw it the other week, and although you don't really expect any less from pro players and written parts, the playing was excellent! Si *edit* Actually I do remember looking up the name in the program at the time, but was unknown to me, should just check again when I get home haha -
A lesson that i learned, the stupid way,was...................you can not make a Thinline Telecaster into a double cutaway, because they are HOLLOW..................i must say that my dad was jolly well upset, that i had ruined said late 60's/early 70's Fender. It was 30 years ago.
OUCH! I somehow feel a lot more at peace with the Truss Rod accident I had the other month! Si
Yes, it means he knows full well it's a fake-up.
I'd be inclined to agree with this conclusion Si

I was asking Jon Shuker about a Zero fret when I was commissioning my Jazz neck from him. He said that in his view they're not really needed if enough care and skill goes into setting up the nut properly. Not saying I understand the pro's and cons for either argument.......just relaying what he said Si

Yeah I fixed that pretty quick sharpish.....seemingly it's all about you and me today haha Si
Don't the Mexican 70's re-issues have a bullet truss rod on the headstock? I'm squinting at his picture and I can't see one.
Yeah and I don't think they have thumbrests either, or 4 bolt necks!? Could be interesting, although the neck looks a bit pasty in the neckplate photo Si

Ah ok, I hadn't looked very close at it! Time for Dood to get the ruler out from the underwear draw! Si

If they did, it would be on the D & G strings instead wouldn't it!? Si
Well I looked at all the advice here and took decided that I all I wanted to do was play Hawkwind and I wasnt that fussed about playing original material. So last night I met up with the guitarist to tell him this. However I wasn’t quite prepared for his reaction. From what I can remember the conversation went something like Me - I’m sorry mate but I’m just not into the stuff your doing now and all I really want is to play Hawkwind Him – I see where your coming from but I cant play anymore Hawkwind as we already play it Me – eh ? Him – well we have another bass player who we play with and we gig Hawkwind stuff with him instead Me – So what was I in the band for Him – well the other bassist and the drummer argue a lot so it’s better to keep them apart when we rehearse ! So it was all bit smoke and mirrors and I wasn’t even in the band I thought I was in all along
Wow, that's a real M. Night Shyamalan ending to the thread lol Si -
More winding on the post would help. If you've already cut it short, try forcing down what wrap you have and hold it down as you re-tighten up to tension.
+1 If it's a Fender style headstock (4-in-a-line), the A string doesn't have the benefit of being right next to the nut like the E string for angle over the nut, nor the benefit of a string-tree like the D & G strings. So by giving it a little bit more winding than you'd give the other strings, you allow the string to sit lower on the tuner, giving a tighter and therefore more tensioned angle over the nut. Si

The problem seems to be when people assume that ordering on their website is the direct responsibility of the people at the shop. Mark @ GAK as apologised many times for the website and always advocates calling him directly! Si

Hey all I've started playing for a live HipHop band called 'Shallow & The Deep' www.myspace.com/shallowandthedeep We've got an Emergenza gig (I know, con merchants) at the Purple Turtle in Camden on Tuesday the 16th Feb. If you're in the area, come down and say Hi, it's a horrible battle of the bands type thing that's based on show of hands. I'm not so bothered about all that as it's my first gig, but would be good to try and get some people down! Cheers all Si

Fascinating inside secrets about Gibson Les Pauls and choosing one:
Ah, I anticipated this you see An electric guitar is an entirely different beast and occupies so much more sonic space, core tone in a leccy guitar is infinitely more important than for a leccy bass.
Si -
Yeah, they're very coarse....precisely the reason I don't like them at all! Si
-
"Core Tone" isn't very important in your bass.
Sibob replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
In reply to the original title... I think core tone on a bass itself is paramount.. haven't read the interim, but I think it is far easier to embellish a sound than to repair and build it.. If a bass didn't have a good tone, first off, it stays in the shop..
Yup Si -
Zappa gave him pretty much free reign on most things. In fact the horn section often complained bitterly to Zappa that Thunes wasn't supporting their solos enough. Zappa got pissed off with them in the end and apparently loved what Thunes did with his music.
Ah ok cool! My mate did lend me Zappa's auto-biography, I should get round to reading it Si
