Cheers for that ebay link, although I think there's a little bit too much going against it for me. For me it would need a refinish, and that bumps it up to normal prices, and the 5 in a line is putting me off. Then newer 4-1 looks much nicer! I've owned a Deluxe 4 before but really disliked the preamp......and since then have disliked most preamps I've tried haha. I'm very much a passive kinda guy, so will stick with the standards for now Si

Cheers guys....I'm thinking about it lol Si

Has anyone out there got an American Fender Jazz 5 Standard that they could give their opinions on please. Sound, if you're also the owner of a MIA standard 4, how does it compare? Pics are obviously always welcome, and and decent sound clips perhaps! Cheers Si
I would therefore suggest that for the string-through-body types a lightweight bridge is beneficial, for the top loading type a heavier bridge will be the better compromise (losing the benefits of the string-through-body design).
Agreed, excellent conclusion! My MIA that I spoke of is through-body, and obviously all BAII's are top loaded. I would suggest that they are comparable solutions, and it's the top loaded 'BBOT' bridges that people are specifically at odds with! Si

Yes mate, check out the 21frets.com website! Si
I prefer the Gotoh 203. Essentially the same but with grooves on the outer saddles to stop them moving over the base plate when you play. Though I do tend to play pretty hard. I couldn't get the action low enough on a BAII as the base plate is too thick.
Ummm my MIA "BBOT" has the same grooves to stop sideways movements! I've got my stock MIA Standard Jazz and a Jazz with a BAII, to my ears there is no noticable difference in tone or sustain. I suppose if I sat down and really studied it there may be, but I wouldn't say it's noticable in a gig setting! It is also worth noting that my housemate and myself compared his MIM bridge to my MIA bridge, and the difference was substantial, the MIM was thinner and didn't have the grub-nut canals/grooves mentioned above. My MIA is perfect and I wouldn't change the bridge for anything Si

Cheers Andy Me and Dave have been investigating it all day! We've sussed it though, it's JV + 5 digits proven by a photo, no idea why she only quoted 3 of the numbers to start with. I did see that one starting JV00xxx was quite early, as it happens, this one is JV4xxxx, placing it Mar-May '83. But yeah, we're going to see it (and hopefully purchase it) on Wednesday, I'll force him to post pics when and if he has it! Cheers all Si

Possibly! To be fair, I'm still awaiting a picture of the neck plate! I've looked at some early JV serials and they are, for example: JV00330 So it could be that the owner is just omitting the first two zero's for whatever reason! Will report back! Si
-
Just looking at a JV Precision for a mate The serial number is seemingly (according to the owner) JV + 3 digits Has anyone heard of this? I've only ever seen JV+5 as the standard! Cheers Si

Eugh, Slinkys I use 40-100 Newtone strings as my first choice and drop D is fine! Si
If you want lighter gauge, but still have enough tension to make a sound, order some high tension strings from Newtone, they can do stuff with the core.
I'd say +1 to this! But I shouldn't think you'd have any problems just going down to D Si

Hey dude! I know we've had a couple of comical too-and-fro's about my '73, but why exactly do you want an early 70's Jazz specifically? (or even a Reissue?) Have you just tried broadening your search to any MIA Jazzes, bearing in mind that pretty much each bass can vary greatly. Although I very much love my '73 and it gets played a lot, basically it's not going anywhere just yet, my 2003 MIA standard beats it to the number one spot. I've never ever played a bass that has bettered it for sound and feel, including Laklands, US Sadowskys, warwicks.....whatever!. All the '73 needs is a bit more TLC in the way of a refret and some new pickups to get it up there no-doubt, but my point is that my '03 is a completely stock, out the box MIA and blows everything I've ever tried out the water. Si p.s. Just popped this over to 'Bass Guitars' too

Fair enough, and to be fair, I don't use enough (or any?!) effects to have a decent enough opinion. But my limited experience with cheap effects is that they don't track as well as higher end gear. Obviously I understand that there are exceptions, cheap Choruses and distortions, compressors etc, people like......but effects that require decent tracking, like detuners, usually benefit from being of good quality. You get what you pay for imo Si

Mike Dimin has some nice chordal melody pieces on his website. Oh and you can get books of Bach's Cello Suites arranged for bass Si

Something that Steve Lawson pointed out to me at my last lesson was is the concept of: Is it right? Is it good? Obviously too different things that require subjective thought Si

Loving the white Precision! Si

Yeah I can understand blending an octave-down signal with an original signal, but not blending a normal signal (say an E) with a signal that is only detuned 2 steps, that would be a low E with a low C blended in.....yuk! Si
-
I think the only blend possible is on the octave down (the furthest light on the left), not sure why you'd want to blend the original signal into a step or two steps down etc.....would sound dreadful lol. They look like they're coming in at about £149 Si
