Picking up the southern Compact from stingrayfan on Sunday. Think I'll get about two electric gigs and an EUB gig with it, so should be fun! Forgot to say to m00sh that picking it up from me in Wycombe is fine if he wants it before Alien Si

A/B'ed DiMarzio UltraJazz vs MIA 2009 Fender Jazz pickups
Sibob replied to Clarky's topic in Hardware & Accessories
It would be interesting to get some more era's of Fender pickups compared to UltraJazzes (just using the UJ's as a benchmark). Simply because I think the p'ups in my 2003 MIA Jazz are fantastic, I've already talked to Clarky about this, but I genuinely feel that they're the best pickups I've tried in ANY bass!! I've got UJ's in my Shuker/Parts jazz, but as some of you know, the neck is being repaired, so I'll have to wait to do a full comparison! Si -
Ya tis an 'A' Series, and pretty cool too. Stephen mate, maybe try taking the pole pieces under the G & D strings down on the P pickup, they should be fully adjustable with an allen key! Si

Obscure Musical Backwaters - The Great SGC Nanyo Thread
Sibob replied to Happy Jack's topic in Bass Guitars
Had this a few years ago. I think I created a monster. I changed the pickups( EMG 5P and J) because I felt that the originals did not cover the low B well enough it sounded awesome and I wish I never sold it on. Its in Spain somewhere I think. The colour was not one of the best finishes tho'
This looks the same as the two that I had, albeit right handed! Trans-purple 5 strings with soapbars, 4 controls (vol, blend, bass, treble) and an avtive/passive switch! Excellent basses! Si -

Here's the '85 Japanese Precision that I just aquired Ex Mythste & Bassassin Very happy with it so far, needs a setup and some new strings....trying to decide between Round or Flats! But it's my first proper P (that isn't a parts bass with a Jazz neck haha), so am looking forward to delving into it! Si

There's also Kings Road Vintage Guitar shop just down the road from you in Fulham! The website is showing some very nice old basses Si

Why is C the 'first' note of the scale?
Sibob replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Theory and Technique
Lowest note on a Piano is A C is in the middle, so often a good place to start!? Probably coincidental, but I like it Si -
Very happy with these two replies so far! Genuinely!! Si
I'm more impressed than a nice groove and feel from a bass player, rather than being concerned about how he physically plays it. A great line is as great if it's played on a cheapo Encore copy with a pick, as it is on a Fodera with fingers IMO. Danny
+1 Also another thread reminded me of Gabriel Nelson, bass player for Cake, excellent player who changes between pick and fingers depending on what the song needs. ALWAYS writes great basslines regardless how he's playing it! Si

Best plectrum control i have heard in years
Sibob replied to allighatt0r's topic in General Discussion
Check out some Cake tunes for some equally groovy pick playing! Si -
I just got hold of an '85 Japanese Squier Precision and I'm wondering how you people set your pickups! I'm a bit of a noob at getting a good P sound, as I'm definitly in the Jazz Bass fanboy camp There's obviously the classic 'triangle' setting, where the middle of the two pickups are higher than the treble and bass sides. Or do you have them flat? Or is it very much to do with the individual instrument? Cheers Si

The only pick player that has ever genuinely impressed me from a Bass playing perspective (as opposed to just being a solid part of the band) is Justin Chancellor from Tool. He's incredibly musical and really makes the most of his pick tone!. Oh and Steve Swallow is obviously amazing...but excites me less tonewise Si

I think you're always going to have to have a certain few staple specs: Power Handling (I know this is a point of contention with some people) Ohmage Weight Speaker Sizes Front/Rear/No porting etc etc But everything else (apart from this VD thing perhaps) is open to so much subjectivity and other variables. I'm obviously no audiologist, but I would have thought perceived frequency responses and things like that change from room to room, venue to venue???. Not to mention the inherent differences in how each pair of ears actually HEARS something. Obviously correct me if I'm wrong. And so from that point of view, I'd rather gig something a few times to establish if a cab is right! Si
-
For what it's worth, I don't care for specs....mostly because I don't understand them. I'm an advocate of letting my ears decide, I would never buy an amp or a cab based on written speculation. I've gigged a Barefaced 'Big One' a few times and was very impressed with it as a 1x15.....did it live up to its specs? Who cares, it sounds good!. I play an Ashdown 4x8 mostly, sometimes combined with a 1x15. Do these cabs live up to others on a spec sheet?, perhaps not, but then I've been happy with them for 5 years, so make of that what you will Si

He's gonna have to keep it forever, will take him that long to pay it off haha! Si

Anyone gonna be at the Bass Merchant over the next few days?
Sibob replied to Sibob's topic in General Discussion
When he goes to one of the 'tech' schools....which he inevitably will, all the kids with their Jazz's and Precisions are going to laugh at him . I jest of course, he's very lucky, will hopefully be a great player.....and is probably reading this! Si -
Maybe you should pick the shortlist, then people vote? Cos then you could have the shortlist poll in a separate thread Si

That GMR is £2,295 I don't care how good he is......that's some wealthy-parent spending right there lol Si -
Meh.....it's alright! I jest! Wonderful news I just got hold of an A series Jap Squier as my first foray into 'vintage' Precisions (I'm a Jazz guy you see), that alone is brilliant....so this must be truly sublime, especially with such a great life story behind it!. Sorry if it's already been mentioned, but is it the original case and appropriate candy as well? Si
What was that about wandering a bit quicker? Nice to meet you Si. I hope you had fun after I had to go.
I do apologise for my tardiness mate! nice to meet you to, albeit briefly. Combination of 50 mph sections on the motorway and having a pretty girlfriend lol Didn't try much after you went as I went up today as well. Tried the Overwater 5 fretless.....was alright, got very confused by the side dots being ON their respective frets, not a fretted player friendly bass haha. Tried the grey Bongo......was alright, didn't feel too nice but sounded alright, too complicated for me though . Where's my Jazz Bass! Like I said, went up today but didn't really check any other basses out. My dad is hopefully going for one of the Taylor acoustics, so spent the visit in (my very limited) guitar mode lol Si -
James Crofts (Shuker Endorsee last I checked) used to play for Bon Giovi. They've done loads of Euro tours and big gigs in the UK etc. Not sure if he's on here, met him a while ago, but didn't stay in contact! Si

So you're saying it's 1000watts at 2ohms then!? But yes, 2x 500watts at 4ohms (non-bridgable). Probably around 350watts at 8ohms Si
